उवाच परिसंहृष्टो जाम्बवान् प्लवगेश्वरः। वीर केसरिणः पुत्र वेगवन् मारुतात्मज
Jāmbavān, the lord of the monkeys, greatly pleased, spoke: 'O heroic son of Keśarī, swift one, son of the Wind!'
ज्ञातीनां विपुलः शोकस्त्वया तात प्रणाशितः। तव कल्याणरुचयः कपिमुख्याः समागताः
The great sorrow of your kinsmen, dear one, has been dispelled by you; the foremost monkeys, radiant in auspiciousness, have gathered for your sake.
मङ्गलान्यर्थसिद्ध्यर्थं करिष्यन्ति समाहिताः। ऋषीणां च प्रसादेन कपिवृद्धमतेन च
Intent upon the fulfillment of the purpose, they will perform auspicious acts; by the favor of the sages and the counsel of the elder monkeys.
गुरूणां च प्रसादेन सम्प्लव त्वं महार्णवम्। स्थास्यामश्चैकपादेन यावदागमनं तव
By the favor of the elders, you must cross the vast ocean; and we shall stand on one foot until your return.
त्वद्गतानि च सर्वेषां जीवनानि वनौकसाम्। ततश्च हरिशार्दूलस्तानुवाच वनौकसः
The lives of all the forest-dwellers depend upon your arrival; then the tiger among monkeys spoke to those forest-dwellers.
कोऽपि लोके न मे वेगं प्लवने धारयिष्यति। एतानीह नगस्यास्य शिलासंकटशालिनः
No one in the world will withstand my speed in leaping; these peaks here, full of rocks and cliffs,
शिखराणि महेन्द्रस्य स्थिराणि च महान्ति च। येषु वेगं गमिष्यामि महेन्द्रशिखरेष्वहम्
The stable and great summits of Mahendra, upon which I will exert my speed, on the peaks of Mahendra.
नानाद्रुमविकीर्णेषु धातुनिष्पन्दशोभिषु। एतानि मम वेगं हि शिखराणि महान्ति च
Scattered with various trees, shining with ores, these great summits will indeed sustain my speed.
प्लवतो धारयिष्यन्ति योजनानामितः शतम्। ततस्तु मारुतप्रख्यः स हरिर्मारुतात्मजः। आरुरोह नगश्रेष्ठं महेन्द्रमरिमर्दनः
While I leap, these great peaks will bear my speed for a hundred yojanas from here; then, the monkey resembling the wind, son of the wind, ascended the best mountain, Mahendra, crusher of enemies.
वृतं नानाविधैः पुष्पैर्मृगसेवितशाद्वलम्। लताकुसुमसम्बाधं नित्यपुष्पफलद्रुमम्
Covered with various flowers, its meadows frequented by deer, crowded with creepers and blossoms, with trees ever bearing flowers and fruits.
सिंहशार्दूलसहितं मत्तमातङ्गसेवितम्। मत्तद्विजगणोद्घुष्टं सलिलोत्पीडसंकुलम्
Together with lions and tigers, frequented by intoxicated elephants, resounding with flocks of excited birds, teeming with water springs.
महद्भिरुच्छ्रितं शृङ्गैर्महेन्द्रं स महाबलः। विचचार हरिश्रेष्ठो महेन्द्रसमविक्रमः
That mighty one, with lofty peaks, Mahendra, the foremost monkey, equal in valor to Mahendra, wandered about.
पादाभ्यां पीडितस्तेन महाशैलो महात्मना। ररास सिंहाभिहतो महान् मत्त इव द्विपः
Pressed by the feet of that great-souled one, the mighty mountain roared, struck by lions, like an intoxicated elephant.
मुमोच सलिलोत्पीडान् विप्रकीर्णशिलोच्चयः। वित्रस्तमृगमातङ्गः प्रकम्पितमहाद्रुमः
It released streams of water, its rocky heights scattered; frightened deer and elephants, great trees shaken.
नानागन्धर्वमिथुनैः पानसंसर्गकर्कशैः। उत्पतद्भिर्विहंगैश्च विद्याधरगणैरपि
With various Gandharva couples, rough from the mingling of drink, birds flying up, and even groups of Vidyādharas.
त्यज्यमानमहासानुः संनिलीनमहोरगः। शैलशृङ्गशिलोत्पातस्तदाभूत् स महागिरिः
Its vast plateau abandoned, great serpents concealed, the mountain's peaks and rocks were upheaved at that time.
निःश्वसद्भिस्तदा तैस्तु भुजगैरर्धनिःसृतैः। सपताक इवाभाति स तदा धरणीधरः
With those serpents then exhaling, half-emerged, the mountain appeared as if adorned with banners.
ऋषिभिस्त्राससम्भ्रान्तैस्त्यज्यमानः शिलोच्चयः। सीदन् महति कान्तारे सार्थहीन इवाध्वगः
Abandoned by terrified and agitated sages, its rocky heights collapsing, the mountain sank in the vast wilderness like a traveler bereft of his caravan.
स वेगवान् वेगसमाहितात्मा हरिप्रवीरः परवीरहन्ता। मनः समाधाय महानुभावो जगाम लङ्कां मनसा मनस्वी
That swift one, his mind united with speed, the heroic monkey, destroyer of enemy heroes, the great-souled one, fixing his mind, went to Lanka in thought, the mindful.

Desiring to accomplish a deed difficult and without equal, the monkey appeared, with his raised head and neck, like the lord of cattle.
अथ वैदूर्यवर्णेषु शाद्वलेषु महाबलः। धीरः सलिलकल्पेषु विचचार यथासुखम्
Then the mighty and steadfast one wandered at ease among the green meadows, shining like cat’s-eye gems, and places resembling water.
द्विजान् वित्रासयन् धीमानुरसा पादपान् हरन्। मृगांश्च सुबहून् निघ्नन् प्रवृद्ध इव केसरी
Disturbing the birds, breaking trees with his chest, and striking down many animals, the wise one moved like a grown lion.
नीललोहितमाञ्जिष्ठपद्मवर्णैः सितासितैः। स्वभावसिद्धैर्विमलैर्धातुभिः समलंकृतम्
Adorned with pure minerals of blue, red, madder, and lotus hues, both white and black, naturally formed and spotless.
कामरूपिभिराविष्टमभीक्ष्णं सपरिच्छदैः। यक्षकिंनरगन्धर्वैर्देवकल्पैः सपन्नगैः
Inhabited constantly by shape-shifters with their retinues—Yakṣas, Kinnaras, Gandharvas, godlike beings, and serpents.
स तस्य गिरिवर्यस्य तले नागवरायुते। तिष्ठन् कपिवरस्तत्र ह्रदे नाग इवाबभौ
There, at the base of that foremost mountain, surrounded by noble serpents, the best of monkeys stood, resembling a serpent in a pool.
स सूर्याय महेन्द्राय पवनाय स्वयम्भुवे। भूतेभ्यश्चाञ्जलिं कृत्वा चकार गमने मतिम्
He offered reverent salutation with joined palms to the Sun, Indra, the Wind, the Self-born, and the elements, and set his mind on departure.
अञ्जलिं प्राङ्मुखं कुर्वन् पवनायात्मयोनये। ततो हि ववृधे गन्तुं दक्षिणो दक्षिणां दिशम्
Facing east, joining his hands to the Wind and the Self-born, he then grew ready to go southward, intent on the southern direction.
प्लवगप्रवरैर्दृष्टः प्लवने कृतनिश्चयः। ववृधे रामवृद्ध्यर्थं समुद्र इव पर्वसु
Seen by the foremost monkeys, resolved on leaping, he grew in size for Rāma’s purpose, like the ocean at the time of the tide.
निष्प्रमाणशरीरः सँल्लिलङ्घयिषुरर्णवम्। बाहुभ्यां पीडयामास चरणाभ्यां च पर्वतम्
His body immeasurable, wishing to cross the ocean in a single leap, he pressed down on the mountain with his arms and feet.
