Hear now the sixty-sixth chapter in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Kiṣkindhā Kāṇḍa.
Jāmbavān, seeing the monkey army—numbering in the hundreds of thousands—dejected, then spoke to Hanuman in this way.
O hero, best among those who know all the sciences in the world of monkeys, why do you, Hanuman, remain silent, sitting apart in seclusion?
Hanuman, you are indeed equal to Sugrīva, the king of the monkeys, and in brilliance and strength, you are also equal to Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
The son of Ariṣṭanemi, Garuḍa, famed as the mightiest among all birds, is renowned for his great strength.
I have often seen that mighty bird in the ocean, O strong-armed one, lifting up serpents—he is powerful and strong.
The strength in his wings is matched by the power in your arms; your courage and speed are in no way less than his.
O foremost of monkeys, your strength, intellect, brilliance, and spirit surpass all beings—why do you not apply yourself?
Among the Apsarases, Puñjikathalā is renowned as the best; she, known as Añjanā, is the wife of Kesari, the monkey.
She was famed in the three worlds for her incomparable beauty on earth; but, O dear one, by a curse, she became a monkey, though able to assume any form at will.
She was the daughter of the great-souled monkey king Kuñjara, and, taking on a human form, she shone with beauty and youth.
Adorned with wondrous garlands and ornaments, sometimes wearing fine cloth, she wandered on the mountain peak, resembling a rain cloud.
As she stood on the mountain peak, her beautiful yellow garment, marked with red, was gently carried away by the wind.
Then, the wind saw her—her shapely, well-formed thighs, her full, lovely breasts, and her beautiful, well-shaped face.
Seeing her, with broad hips and slender waist, radiant and flawless in every limb, the wind, overcome by desire, was captivated.
The wind, his whole being seized by passion, embraced her blameless form with his long arms.
Startled there, the virtuous woman spoke these words: 'Who wishes to destroy this vow of fidelity to one husband?'
Hearing Anjanā’s words, the Wind-god replied: 'I have not harmed you, fair-hipped one; let there be no fear in your mind.'
'By my mind alone I approached you and embraced you, illustrious lady; your son will be endowed with strength and intelligence.'
'He will possess great spirit, great brilliance, and immense strength and valor; in leaping and flying, he will be equal to me.'
Thus addressed, your mother was pleased, O mighty monkey; in the cave she gave birth to you, strong-armed bull among the Vanaras.
Then, seeing the sun rise in the great forest, you, as a child, leapt up, desiring to seize it as if it were a fruit, and sprang into the sky.
O mighty monkey, after traversing three hundred yojanas, driven by your energy, you did not become despondent.
As you swiftly reached the sky, O mighty monkey, Indra, filled with anger and radiance, hurled his thunderbolt at you.
Then, on the peak of a mountain, your left jaw was broken; from that, you became renowned by the name Hanuman.
Then, seeing you struck down, the Wind-god himself, furious, ceased to blow throughout the three worlds.
With the three worlds disturbed, all the gods became agitated; the lords of the world sought to appease the enraged Wind-god.
When the Wind was appeased, Brahmā granted you a boon: 'O truly valiant one, in battle you shall not be slain by weapons.'
And seeing you unharmed by the blow of the thunderbolt, the thousand-eyed Indra, pleased in heart, granted you a supreme boon.
'Your death shall come only at your own will, O lord.' Thus, you are the son of Kesari, born in the field, of terrible valor.
