उदितां मरणे बुद्धिं मुनिवाक्यैर्निवर्तये। बुद्धिर्या तेन मे दत्ता प्राणानां रक्षणे मम
When the thought of death arises, I turn it back with the sage’s words; the resolve he gave me is for the protection of my life.
सा मेऽपनयते दुःखं दीप्तेवाग्निशिखा तमः। बुध्यता च मया वीर्यं रावणस्य दुरात्मनः
That resolve dispels my sorrow, just as a blazing flame dispels darkness; and I am awakened to the might of wicked Rāvaṇa.
पुत्रः संतर्जितो वाग्भिर्न त्राता मैथिली कथम्। तस्या विलपितं श्रुत्वा तौ च सीतावियोजितौ
Though my son was threatened with harsh words, how could he not protect Maithilī? Hearing her lament, and those two separated from Sītā—
न मे दशरथस्नेहात् पुत्रेणोत्पादितं प्रियम्। तस्य त्वेवं ब्रुवाणस्य संहतैर्वानरैः सह
No joy has come to me from my son out of Daśaratha’s affection; as he spoke thus among the assembled monkeys—
उत्पेततुस्तदा पक्षौ समक्षं वनचारिणाम्। स दृष्ट्वा स्वां तनुं पक्षैरुद्गतैररुणच्छदैः
Then his wings sprang forth before the forest-dwellers; seeing his own body with wings emerging, tinged with red—
प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे वानरांश्चेदमब्रवीत्। निशाकरस्य राजर्षेः प्रसादादमितौजसः
He felt incomparable delight and spoke to the monkeys: 'By the grace of the moon-king, the royal sage of immeasurable energy—'
आदित्यरश्मिनिर्दग्धौ पक्षौ पुनरुपस्थितौ। यौवने वर्तमानस्य ममासीद् यः पराक्रमः
'My wings, once burned by the sun’s rays, have now returned; the prowess I possessed in my youth—'
तमेवाद्यावगच्छामि बलं पौरुषमेव च। सर्वथा क्रियतां यत्नः सीतामधिगमिष्यथ
'That very strength and manliness I now recognize today; by all means, make every effort—you will surely find Sītā.'
पक्षलाभो ममायं वः सिद्धिप्रत्ययकारकः। इत्युक्त्वा तान् हरीन् सर्वान् सम्पातिः पतगोत्तमः
'This recovery of my wings is a sign of your assured success.' Having spoken thus to all the monkeys, Sampāti, the best of birds—
उत्पपात गिरेः शृङ्गाज्जिज्ञासुः खगमो गतिम्। तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रतिसंहृष्टमानसाः। बभूवुर्हरिशार्दूला विक्रमाभ्युदयोन्मुखाः
Leapt up from the mountain peak, eager to test his flight; hearing his words, the foremost of monkeys became filled with joy, their minds set on heroic deeds.
अथ पवनसमानविक्रमाः प्लवगवराः प्रतिलब्धपौरुषाः। अभिजिदभिमुखां दिशं ययु- र्जनकसुतापरिमार्गणोन्मुखाः
Then the foremost monkeys, equal in might to the wind, having regained their courage, set out toward the direction of the zenith, eager to search for Janaka’s daughter.

आख्याता गृध्रराजेन समुत्प्लुत्य प्लवङ्गमाः। संगताः प्रीतिसंयुक्ता विनेदुः सिंहविक्रमाः
Informed by the king of vultures, the monkeys leapt up; united and filled with joy, those lion-like heroes roared.
सम्पातेर्वचनं श्रुत्वा हरयो रावणक्षयम्। हृष्टाः सागरमाजग्मुः सीतादर्शनकांक्षिणः
Hearing Sampāti’s words about Rāvaṇa’s destruction, the monkeys, eager to see Sītā, joyfully reached the ocean.
अभिगम्य तु तं देशं ददृशुर्भीमविक्रमाः। कृत्स्नं लोकस्य महतः प्रतिबिम्बमवस्थितम्
Having reached that place, those of terrible valor beheld the entire reflection of the vast world present there.
दक्षिणस्य समुद्रस्य समासाद्योत्तरां दिशम्। संनिवेशं ततश्चक्रुर्हरिवीरा महाबलाः
Having reached the northern shore of the southern ocean, the mighty monkey heroes then set up their encampment there.
प्रसुप्तमिव चान्यत्र क्रीडन्तमिव चान्यतः। क्वचित् पर्वतमात्रैश्च जलराशिभिरावृतम्
In one place it seemed as if asleep, elsewhere as if playing; in some spots, it was covered by masses of water as high as mountains.
संकुलं दानवेन्द्रैश्च पातालतलवासिभिः। रोमहर्षकरं दृष्ट्वा विषेदुः कपिकुञ्जराः
Seeing it teeming with lords of demons dwelling in the depths of the underworld—a sight that made one's hair stand on end—the monkey warriors became afraid.
आकाशमिव दुष्पारं सागरं प्रेक्ष्य वानराः। विषेदुः सहिताः सर्वे कथं कार्यमिति ब्रुवन्
Beholding the ocean, as impassable as the sky, all the monkeys together despaired, saying, 'How can this task be accomplished?'
विषण्णां वाहिनीं दृष्ट्वा सागरस्य निरीक्षणात्। आश्वासयामास हरीन् भयार्तान् हरिसत्तमः
Seeing the army disheartened at the sight of the ocean, the foremost of monkeys encouraged the terrified monkeys.
न विषादे मनः कार्यं विषादो दोषवत्तरः। विषादो हन्ति पुरुषं बालं क्रुद्ध इवोरगः
One should not let the mind fall into despair; despair is most harmful. Despair destroys a person like an angry serpent destroys a child.
यो विषादं प्रसहते विक्रमे समुपस्थिते। तेजसा तस्य हीनस्य पुरुषार्थो न सिद्ध्यति
He who succumbs to despair when action is required—his purpose does not succeed, for he is deprived of energy.
तस्यां रात्र्यां व्यतीतायामङ्गदो वानरैः सह। हरिवृद्धैः समागम्य पुनर्मन्त्रममन्त्रयत्
When that night had passed, Angada, together with the elder monkeys, again gathered and deliberated on their course of action.
सा वानराणां ध्वजिनी परिवार्याङ्गदं बभौ। वासवं परिवार्येव मरुतां वाहिनी स्थिता
That army of monkeys, surrounding Angada, shone like the host of winds standing around Indra.
कोऽन्यस्तां वानरीं सेनां शक्तः स्तम्भयितुं भवेत् । अन्यत्र वालितनयादन्यत्र च हनूमतः
Who else could restrain that monkey army, except for Vali's son or Hanuman?
ततस्तान् हरिवृद्धांश्च तच्च सैन्यमरिंदमः। अनुमान्याङ्गदः श्रीमान् वाक्यमर्थवदब्रवीत्
Then Angada, illustrious and subduer of foes, after consulting with the elder monkeys and the army, spoke meaningful words.
क इदानीं महातेजा लङ्घयिष्यति सागरम्। कः करिष्यति सुग्रीवं सत्यसंधमरिंदमम्
Who now among you, possessed of great energy, will leap across the ocean? Who will fulfill the promise to Sugriva, the subduer of enemies?
को वीरो योजनशतं लङ्घयेत प्लवङ्गमः। इमांश्च यूथपान् सर्वान् मोचयेत् को महाभयात्
Which hero among the monkeys can leap a hundred yojanas? Who will rescue all these chiefs from this great danger?
कस्य प्रसादाद् दारांश्च पुत्रांश्चैव गृहाणि च। इतो निवृत्ताः पश्येम सिद्धार्थाः सुखिनो वयम्
By whose favor will we, having accomplished our purpose, return from here and see our wives, sons, and homes, happy and fulfilled?
कस्य प्रसादाद् रामं च लक्ष्मणं च महाबलम्। अभिगच्छेम संहृष्टाः सुग्रीवं च वनौकसम्
By whose favor will we, rejoicing, approach Rama, mighty Lakshmana, and Sugriva, lord of the forest-dwellers?
