एवमुक्त्वा मुनिश्रेष्ठमरुदं भृशदुःखितः। अथ ध्यात्वा मुहूर्तं च भगवानिदमब्रवीत्
Having spoken thus to the foremost sage, the wind-god, greatly afflicted, then meditated for a moment, and the venerable one spoke these words.
पक्षौ च ते प्रपक्षौ च पुनरन्यौ भविष्यतः। चक्षुषी चैव प्राणाश्च विक्रमश्च बलं च ते
Your wings, and even your auxiliary wings, will be restored anew; your eyes, your vital breath, your prowess, and your strength as well.
पुराणे सुमहत्कार्यं भविष्यं हि मया श्रुतम्। दृष्टं मे तपसा चैव श्रुत्वा च विदितं मम
A great deed destined for the future has been heard by me in ancient times; I have seen it through austerity, and by hearing, it is known to me.
राजा दशरथो नाम कश्चिदिक्ष्वाकुवर्धनः। तस्य पुत्रो महातेजा रामो नाम भविष्यति
There will be a king named Daśaratha, an enhancer of the Ikṣvāku lineage; his son, of great splendor, will be named Rāma.
अरण्यं च सह भ्रात्रा लक्ष्मणेन गमिष्यति। तस्मिन्नर्थे नियुक्तः सन् पित्रा सत्यपराक्रमः
He will go to the forest together with his brother Lakṣmaṇa, having been appointed for that purpose by his father, steadfast in truth and valor.
नैर्ऋतो रावणो नाम तस्य भार्यां हरिष्यति। राक्षसेन्द्रो जनस्थाने अवध्यः सुरदानवैः
A demon named Rāvaṇa, lord of the Rākṣasas, will abduct his wife; he is invulnerable to gods and demons, dwelling in Janasthāna.
सा च कामैः प्रलोभ्यन्ती भक्ष्यैर्भोज्यैश्च मैथिली। न भोक्ष्यति महाभागा दुःखमग्ना यशस्विनी
That Maithilī, though tempted by desires, by food and delicacies, will not partake; the illustrious lady, plunged in sorrow, will abstain.
परमान्नं च वैदेह्या ज्ञात्वा दास्यति वासवः। यदन्नममृतप्रख्यं सुराणामपि दुर्लभम्
Knowing the supreme food for Vaidehī, Indra will give it; that food, akin to ambrosia, is rare even for the gods.
तदन्नं मैथिली प्राप्य विज्ञायेन्द्रादिदं त्विति। अग्रमुद्धृत्य रामाय भूतले निर्वपिष्यति
Maithilī, having received that food and recognizing it as from Indra, will take a portion and offer it to Rāma upon the earth.
यदि जीवति मे भर्ता लक्ष्मणो वापि देवरः। देवत्वं गच्छतोर्वापि तयोरन्नमिदं त्विति
If my husband or my brother-in-law Lakṣmaṇa is alive, or if either has attained divinity, let this food be for them, she will say.
एष्यन्ति प्रेषितास्तत्र रामदूताः प्लवङ्गमाः। आख्येया राममहिषी त्वया तेभ्यो विहङ्गम
Messengers of Rāma, the monkeys sent there, will arrive; you, O bird, must tell them about Rāma's wife.
सर्वथा तु न गन्तव्यमीदृशः क्व गमिष्यसि। देशकालौ प्रतीक्षस्व पक्षौ त्वं प्रतिपत्स्यसे
By no means should you depart now; where would you go? Wait for the right time and place; you will regain your wings.
उत्सहेयमहं कर्तुमद्यैव त्वां सपक्षकम्। इहस्थस्त्वं हि लोकानां हितं कार्यं करिष्यसि
I am able to restore you, with your wings, even today; remaining here, you will accomplish the welfare of the worlds.
त्वयापि खलु तत् कार्यं तयोश्च नृपपुत्रयोः। ब्राह्मणानां गुरूणां च मुनीनां वासवस्य च
This task is yours, and also for those two royal sons, for the Brāhmaṇas, the elders, the sages, and for Indra.
इच्छाम्यहमपि द्रष्टुं भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ। नेच्छे चिरं धारयितुं प्राणांस्त्यक्ष्ये कलेवरम्। महर्षिस्त्वब्रवीदेवं दृष्टतत्त्वार्थदर्शनः
I too wish to see the brothers Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa; I do not wish to sustain my life long, I will abandon my body. Thus spoke the great sage, perceiving the truth and its meaning.

एतैरन्यैश्च बहुभिर्वाक्यैर्वाक्यविशारदः। मां प्रशस्याभ्यनुज्ञाप्य प्रविष्टः स स्वमालयम्
With these and many other words, the eloquent one praised and permitted me, then entered his own abode.
कन्दरात् तु विसर्पित्वा पर्वतस्य शनैः शनैः। अहं विन्ध्यं समारुह्य भवतः प्रतिपालये
Having crept out from the cave of the mountain, slowly and gradually, I ascended the Vindhya and awaited you.
अद्य त्वेतस्य कालस्य वर्षं साग्रशतं गतम्। देशकालप्रतीक्षोऽस्मि हृदि कृत्वा मुनेर्वचः
Now, with this time having passed, a hundred years and more have gone by; I have been waiting for the right place and time, holding the sage’s words in my heart.
महाप्रस्थानमासाद्य स्वर्गते तु निशाकरे। मां निर्दहति संतापो वितर्कैर्बहुभिर्वृतम्
Having reached the great departure, when the moon-king ascended to heaven, a burning anguish consumes me, surrounded by many doubts.
उदितां मरणे बुद्धिं मुनिवाक्यैर्निवर्तये। बुद्धिर्या तेन मे दत्ता प्राणानां रक्षणे मम
When the thought of death arises, I turn it back with the sage’s words; the resolve he gave me is for the protection of my life.
सा मेऽपनयते दुःखं दीप्तेवाग्निशिखा तमः। बुध्यता च मया वीर्यं रावणस्य दुरात्मनः
That resolve dispels my sorrow, just as a blazing flame dispels darkness; and I am awakened to the might of wicked Rāvaṇa.
पुत्रः संतर्जितो वाग्भिर्न त्राता मैथिली कथम्। तस्या विलपितं श्रुत्वा तौ च सीतावियोजितौ
Though my son was threatened with harsh words, how could he not protect Maithilī? Hearing her lament, and those two separated from Sītā—
न मे दशरथस्नेहात् पुत्रेणोत्पादितं प्रियम्। तस्य त्वेवं ब्रुवाणस्य संहतैर्वानरैः सह
No joy has come to me from my son out of Daśaratha’s affection; as he spoke thus among the assembled monkeys—
उत्पेततुस्तदा पक्षौ समक्षं वनचारिणाम्। स दृष्ट्वा स्वां तनुं पक्षैरुद्गतैररुणच्छदैः
Then his wings sprang forth before the forest-dwellers; seeing his own body with wings emerging, tinged with red—
प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे वानरांश्चेदमब्रवीत्। निशाकरस्य राजर्षेः प्रसादादमितौजसः
He felt incomparable delight and spoke to the monkeys: 'By the grace of the moon-king, the royal sage of immeasurable energy—'
आदित्यरश्मिनिर्दग्धौ पक्षौ पुनरुपस्थितौ। यौवने वर्तमानस्य ममासीद् यः पराक्रमः
'My wings, once burned by the sun’s rays, have now returned; the prowess I possessed in my youth—'
तमेवाद्यावगच्छामि बलं पौरुषमेव च। सर्वथा क्रियतां यत्नः सीतामधिगमिष्यथ
'That very strength and manliness I now recognize today; by all means, make every effort—you will surely find Sītā.'
पक्षलाभो ममायं वः सिद्धिप्रत्ययकारकः। इत्युक्त्वा तान् हरीन् सर्वान् सम्पातिः पतगोत्तमः
'This recovery of my wings is a sign of your assured success.' Having spoken thus to all the monkeys, Sampāti, the best of birds—
उत्पपात गिरेः शृङ्गाज्जिज्ञासुः खगमो गतिम्। तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रतिसंहृष्टमानसाः। बभूवुर्हरिशार्दूला विक्रमाभ्युदयोन्मुखाः
Leapt up from the mountain peak, eager to test his flight; hearing his words, the foremost of monkeys became filled with joy, their minds set on heroic deeds.
