किं ते व्याधिसमुत्थानं पक्षयोः पतनं कथम्। दण्डो वायं धृतः केन सर्वमाख्याहि पृच्छतः
What is the cause of your illness? How did your wings fall? Who has inflicted this punishment? Tell me everything as I ask.

Hear now the sixty-first chapter in the Kiṣkindhā Kāṇḍa of the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa.
ततस्तद् दारुणं कर्म दुष्करं सहसा कृतम्। आचचक्षे मुनेः सर्वं सूर्यानुगमनं तथा
Then, that dreadful and difficult deed was swiftly accomplished; I recounted everything to the sage, including the pursuit of the sun.
भगवन् व्रणयुक्तत्वाल्लज्जया चाकुलेन्द्रियः। परिश्रान्तो न शक्नोमि वचनं परिभाषितुम्
O venerable one, wounded and ashamed, my senses disturbed and exhausted, I am unable to speak clearly.
अहं चैव जटायुश्च संघर्षाद् गर्वमोहितौ। आकाशं पतितौ दूराज्जिज्ञासन्तौ पराक्रमम्
Both Jatāyu and I, overcome by pride and rivalry, leapt into the sky from afar, eager to test our strength.
कैलासशिखरे बद्ध्वा मुनीनामग्रतः पणम्। रविः स्यादनुयातव्यो यावदस्तं महागिरिम्
On the summit of Mount Kailāsa, in the presence of sages, we made a wager: to follow the sun until it reached the great mountain at sunset.
अप्यावां युगपत् प्राप्तावपश्याव महीतले। रथचक्रप्रमाणानि नगराणि पृथक् पृथक्
Indeed, as we traveled together, we saw on the earth below many cities, each the size of a chariot wheel, distinct from one another.
क्वचिद् वादित्रघोषश्च क्वचिद् भूषणनिःस्वनः। गायन्तीः स्माङ्गना बह्वीः पश्यावो रक्तवाससः
In some places, we heard the sound of musical instruments; elsewhere, the jingling of ornaments; we saw many women dressed in red, singing.
तूर्णमुत्पत्य चाकाशमादित्यपदमास्थितौ। आवामालोकयावस्तद् वनं शाद्वलसंस्थितम्
Swiftly rising into the sky, we reached the sun’s path; from there, we looked down upon that forest, lush with green meadows.
उपलैरिव संछन्ना दृश्यते भूः शिलोच्चयैः। आपगाभिश्च संवीता सूत्रैरिव वसुंधरा
The earth appeared covered with rocky peaks, as if with stones, and was encircled by rivers, like threads woven around the land.
हिमवांश्चैव विन्ध्यश्च मेरुश्च सुमहागिरिः। भूतले सम्प्रकाशन्ते नागा इव जलाशये
The Himālaya, Vindhya, and the great Meru mountains shone forth on the earth, like mighty serpents in a pool of water.
तीव्रः स्वेदश्च खेदश्च भयं चासीत् तदावयोः। समाविशत मोहश्च ततो मूर्च्छा च दारुणा
Then, intense sweat, fatigue, and fear seized us both; confusion overtook us, followed by a dreadful fainting.
न च दिग् ज्ञायते याम्या न चाग्नेयी न वारुणी। युगान्ते नियतो लोको हतो दग्ध इवाग्निना
We could not discern the southern, southeastern, or western directions; the world seemed destroyed at the end of an age, as if burned by fire.
मनश्च मे हतं भूयश्चक्षुः प्राप्य तु संश्रयम्। यत्नेन महता ह्यस्मिन् मनः संधाय चक्षुषी
My mind was overwhelmed, and my sight faltered; with great effort, I steadied my mind and vision in that place.
यत्नेन महता भूयो भास्करः प्रतिलोकितः। तुल्यपृथ्वीप्रमाणेन भास्करः प्रतिभाति नौ
With great effort, I looked again at the sun; to us, the sun appeared equal in size to the earth.
जटायुर्मामनापृच्छ्य निपपात महीं ततः। तं दृष्ट्वा तूर्णमाकाशादात्मानं मुक्तवानहम्
Without bidding me farewell, Jatāyu fell to the earth; seeing him swiftly descend from the sky, I released myself as well.
पक्षाभ्यां च मया गुप्तो जटायुर्न प्रदह्यत। प्रमादात् तत्र निर्दग्धः पतन् वायुपथादहम्
Shielded by my wings, Jatāyu was not burned; but through carelessness, I was scorched and fell from the path of the wind.
आशङ्के तं निपतितं जनस्थाने जटायुषम्। अहं तु पतितो विन्ध्ये दग्धपक्षो जडीकृतः
I suspect that Jatāyu fell in Janasthāna; but I myself fell upon the Vindhya, my wings burned and my body paralyzed.
राज्याच्च हीनो भ्रात्रा च पक्षाभ्यां विक्रमेण च। सर्वथा मर्तुमेवेच्छन् पतिष्ये शिखराद् गिरेः
Deprived of my kingdom, my brother, and the strength of my wings, I resolved in every way to die, and so I cast myself from the mountain peak.

Hear now the sixty-second chapter in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Kiṣkindhā Book.
एवमुक्त्वा मुनिश्रेष्ठमरुदं भृशदुःखितः। अथ ध्यात्वा मुहूर्तं च भगवानिदमब्रवीत्
Having spoken thus to the foremost sage, the wind-god, greatly afflicted, then meditated for a moment, and the venerable one spoke these words.
पक्षौ च ते प्रपक्षौ च पुनरन्यौ भविष्यतः। चक्षुषी चैव प्राणाश्च विक्रमश्च बलं च ते
Your wings, and even your auxiliary wings, will be restored anew; your eyes, your vital breath, your prowess, and your strength as well.
पुराणे सुमहत्कार्यं भविष्यं हि मया श्रुतम्। दृष्टं मे तपसा चैव श्रुत्वा च विदितं मम
A great deed destined for the future has been heard by me in ancient times; I have seen it through austerity, and by hearing, it is known to me.
राजा दशरथो नाम कश्चिदिक्ष्वाकुवर्धनः। तस्य पुत्रो महातेजा रामो नाम भविष्यति
There will be a king named Daśaratha, an enhancer of the Ikṣvāku lineage; his son, of great splendor, will be named Rāma.
अरण्यं च सह भ्रात्रा लक्ष्मणेन गमिष्यति। तस्मिन्नर्थे नियुक्तः सन् पित्रा सत्यपराक्रमः
He will go to the forest together with his brother Lakṣmaṇa, having been appointed for that purpose by his father, steadfast in truth and valor.
नैर्ऋतो रावणो नाम तस्य भार्यां हरिष्यति। राक्षसेन्द्रो जनस्थाने अवध्यः सुरदानवैः
A demon named Rāvaṇa, lord of the Rākṣasas, will abduct his wife; he is invulnerable to gods and demons, dwelling in Janasthāna.
सा च कामैः प्रलोभ्यन्ती भक्ष्यैर्भोज्यैश्च मैथिली। न भोक्ष्यति महाभागा दुःखमग्ना यशस्विनी
That Maithilī, though tempted by desires, by food and delicacies, will not partake; the illustrious lady, plunged in sorrow, will abstain.
परमान्नं च वैदेह्या ज्ञात्वा दास्यति वासवः। यदन्नममृतप्रख्यं सुराणामपि दुर्लभम्
Knowing the supreme food for Vaidehī, Indra will give it; that food, akin to ambrosia, is rare even for the gods.
तदन्नं मैथिली प्राप्य विज्ञायेन्द्रादिदं त्विति। अग्रमुद्धृत्य रामाय भूतले निर्वपिष्यति
Maithilī, having received that food and recognizing it as from Indra, will take a portion and offer it to Rāma upon the earth.
यदि जीवति मे भर्ता लक्ष्मणो वापि देवरः। देवत्वं गच्छतोर्वापि तयोरन्नमिदं त्विति
If my husband or my brother-in-law Lakṣmaṇa is alive, or if either has attained divinity, let this food be for them, she will say.
