पश्यन् दाशरथेर्भार्यां रामस्य जनकात्मजाम्। भ्रष्टाभरणकौशेयां शोकवेगपराजिताम्
I saw the wife of Daśaratha's son, Rāma, the daughter of Janaka, stripped of her ornaments and silks, overcome by the force of grief.
रामलक्ष्मणयोर्नाम क्रोशन्तीं मुक्तमूर्धजाम्। एष कालात्ययस्तात इति वाक्यविदां वरः
Her hair unbound, crying out the names of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa—this, O dear one, is the time that has passed, as declared by the best of those skilled in speech.
एतदर्थं समग्रं मे सुपार्श्वः प्रत्यवेदयत् । तच्छ्रुत्वापि हि मे बुद्धिर्नासीत् काचित् पराक्रमे
Supārśva fully informed me of this matter; yet, even after hearing it, I had no resolve for action.
अपक्षो हि कथं पक्षी कर्म किंचित् समारभेत्। यत् तु शक्यं मया कर्तुं वाग्बुद्धिगुणवर्तिना
For how can a wingless bird undertake any deed? Yet, whatever I can do, guided by speech and wisdom—
श्रूयतां तत्र वक्ष्यामि भवतां पौरुषाश्रयम्। वाङ्मतिभ्यां हि सर्वेषां करिष्यामि प्रियं हि वः
Hear now what I will say, relying on your valor; for with words and intelligence, I will do what pleases you all.
यद्धि दाशरथेः कार्यं मम तन्नात्र संशयः। तद् भवन्तो मतिश्रेष्ठा बलवन्तो मनस्विनः
Indeed, whatever is Rāma's task is surely mine—of this there is no doubt; you are all of excellent judgment, strong, and resolute.
प्रहिताः कपिराजेन देवैरपि दुरासदाः। रामलक्ष्मणबाणाश्च विहिताः कङ्कपत्रिणः
Sent by the king of monkeys, you are formidable even for the gods; and the arrows of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, feathered with eagle plumes, are prepared.
त्रयाणामपि लोकानां पर्याप्तास्त्राणनिग्रहे। कामं खलु दशग्रीवस्तेजोबलसमन्वितः। भवतां तु समर्थानां न किंचिदपि दुष्करम्
Sufficient to restrain the weapons of all three worlds, surely the ten-headed one possesses great energy and strength; yet for you, who are capable, nothing is difficult.
तदलं कालसङ्गेन क्रियतां बुद्धिनिश्चयः। नहि कर्मसु सज्जन्ते बुद्धिमन्तो भवद्विधाः
Therefore, enough of delay—let a firm decision be made; for the wise, like you, do not linger in action.

ततः कृतोदकं स्नातं तं गृध्रं हरियूथपाः। उपविष्टा गिरौ रम्ये परिवार्य समन्ततः
Then, having performed the water-rite and bathed, the monkey chiefs sat around that vulture on the lovely mountain, surrounding him on all sides.
तमङ्गदमुपासीनं तैः सर्वैर्हरिभिर्वृतम्। जनितप्रत्ययो हर्षात् सम्पातिः पुनरब्रवीत्
Sampāti, filled with joy and confidence, again spoke as Angada sat there, surrounded by all the monkeys.
कृत्वा निःशब्दमेकाग्राः शृण्वन्तु हरयो मम। तथ्यं संकीर्तयिष्यामि यथा जानामि मैथिलीम्
Let the monkeys, silent and attentive, listen to me; I will recount the truth as I know it about the Maithilī.
अस्य विन्ध्यस्य शिखरे पतितोऽस्मि पुरानघ। सूर्यतापपरीताङ्गो निर्दग्धः सूर्यरश्मिभिः
Long ago, O sinless one, I fell upon the peak of this Vindhya mountain, my body afflicted by the sun's heat, scorched by the rays of the sun.
लब्धसंज्ञस्तु षड्रात्राद् विवशो विह्वलन्निव। वीक्षमाणो दिशः सर्वा नाभिजानामि किंचन
Regaining consciousness after six nights, weak and disoriented, I looked in all directions but could not recognize anything.
ततस्तु सागरान् शैलान् नदीः सर्वाः सरांसि च। वनानि च प्रदेशांश्च निरीक्ष्य मतिरागता
Then, observing the oceans, mountains, all the rivers, lakes, forests, and regions, my understanding returned.
हृष्टपक्षिगणाकीर्णः कन्दरोदरकूटवान्। दक्षिणस्योदधेस्तीरे विन्ध्योऽयमिति निश्चितः
This is certainly the Vindhya, full of peaks and caves, crowded with joyful flocks of birds, on the southern shore of the ocean.
आसीच्चात्राश्रमं पुण्यं सुरैरपि सुपूजितम्। ऋषिर्निशाकरो नाम यस्मिन्नुग्रतपाऽभवत्
Here there was a sacred hermitage, greatly revered even by the gods, where a sage named Nishakara practiced severe austerities.
अष्टौ वर्षसहस्राणि तेनास्मिन्नृषिणा गिरौ। वसतो मम धर्मज्ञे स्वर्गते तु निशाकरे
For eight thousand years, that sage dwelled on this mountain; after the righteous Nishakara ascended to heaven,
अवतीर्य च विन्ध्याग्रात् कृच्छ्रेण विषमाच्छनैः। तीक्ष्णदर्भां वसुमतीं दुःखेन पुनरागतः
Descending with difficulty from the summit of Vindhya, slowly and through hardship, I returned with pain to the earth covered in sharp darbha grass.
तमृषिं द्रष्टुकामोऽस्मि दुःखेनाभ्यागतो भृशम्। जटायुषा मया चैव बहुशोऽधिगतो हि सः
Desiring to see that sage, I came here, greatly troubled; he has often been approached by both Jatayu and myself.
तस्याश्रमपदाभ्याशे ववुर्वाताः सुगन्धिनः। वृक्षो नापुष्पितः कश्चिदफलो वा न दृश्यते
Near his hermitage, fragrant winds blew; no tree was seen without flowers or without fruit.
उपेत्य चाश्रमं पुण्यं वृक्षमूलमुपाश्रितः। द्रष्टुकामः प्रतीक्षे च भगवन्तं निशाकरम्
Approaching the sacred hermitage, I took shelter at the root of a tree, waiting, wishing to see the venerable Nishakara.
अथ पश्यामि दूरस्थमृषिं ज्वलिततेजसम्। कृताभिषेकं दुर्धर्षमुपावृत्तमुदङ्मुखम्
Then I saw from afar the sage, blazing with splendor, having completed his ablutions, formidable, returning and facing north.
तमृक्षाः सृमरा व्याघ्राः सिंहा नानासरीसृपाः। परिवार्योपगच्छन्ति दातारं प्राणिनो यथा
Bears, hyenas, tigers, lions, and various reptiles surrounded him as he approached, like living beings gathering around a giver of life.
ततः प्राप्तमृषिं ज्ञात्वा तानि सत्त्वानि वै ययुः। प्रविष्टे राजनि यथा सर्वं सामात्यकं बलम्
Then, recognizing the sage had arrived, those creatures departed, just as all the troops with their ministers withdraw when the king enters.
ऋषिस्तु दृष्ट्वा मां तुष्टः प्रविष्टश्चाश्रमं पुनः। मुहूर्तमात्रान्निर्गम्य ततः कार्यमपृच्छत
The sage, seeing me, was pleased and re-entered the hermitage; after a brief moment, he came out and asked my purpose.
सौम्य वैकल्यतां दृष्ट्वा रोम्णां ते नावगम्यते। अग्निदग्धाविमौ पक्षौ प्राणाश्चापि शरीरके
Gentle one, seeing the condition of your feathers, it is clear: both your wings are scorched by fire, and even your life-breaths remain in your body with difficulty.
गृध्रौ द्वौ दृष्टपूर्वौ मे मातरिश्वसमौ जवे। गृध्राणां चैव राजानौ भ्रातरौ कामरूपिणौ
I have seen two vultures before, swift as the wind, kings among vultures, brothers, able to assume any form at will.
ज्येष्ठोऽवितस्त्वं सम्पाते जटायुरनुजस्तव। मानुषं रूपमास्थाय गृह्णीतां चरणौ मम
You are the elder, Sampati, and Jatayu is your younger brother; assuming human form, come and take hold of my feet.
