We have entered the wilderness and do not see Maithilī; but the king of vultures is fortunate, for he was slain in battle by Rāvaṇa, freed from fear of Sugrīva, and has attained the highest state.
With the destruction of Jaṭāyu and King Daśaratha, and the abduction of Vaidehī, the monkeys have fallen into doubt.
The dwelling of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa in the forest with Sītā, the slaying of Vāli by Rāghava's arrow—
And the destruction of all the Rākṣasas by Rāma's wrath, and this perversion brought about by Kaikeyī's granting of boons—
Then, having spoken these painful words and seeing the monkeys fallen to the ground, the great-minded king of vultures, his mind greatly agitated, uttered these pitiful words.
Hearing those words spoken from Aṅgada's mouth, the sharp-beaked, loud-voiced vulture spoke these words:
Who is this who proclaims with his voice the death of my brother Jaṭāyu, dearer to me than life, shaking my heart?
How did the battle take place at Janasthāna between the Rākṣasa and the vulture? Only today, after a long time, have I heard my brother's name.
I wish to be brought down from this mountain stronghold by you, who are younger, virtuous, and praiseworthy for your valor.
After a very long time, I am satisfied by this narration; I wish to hear, O best of monkeys, about his destruction.
Of my brother Jaṭāyu, who dwelt at Janasthāna, and of my brother's friend Daśaratha—how is he?
For whom Rāma, the beloved eldest son, dear to his elders, is so precious—because my wings are scorched by the sun's rays, I cannot fly; I wish, O destroyers of foes, to descend from this mountain.
Let the fifty-seventh sarga be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Kiṣkindhā Kāṇḍa.
Hearing even his voice, broken by grief, the leaders of the monkey troops did not believe his words, being suspicious because of his actions.
Seeing the vulture as they sat down to fast, the monkeys then formed a grim resolve: 'He will devour us all.'
If, as we sit here fasting, he does not eat us, then our task will be accomplished and we will quickly attain success from here.
Then all those leaders of the monkeys made this decision; Angada, having descended from the mountain peak, addressed the vulture.
There was a powerful monkey king named Riksharaja; he was my noble ancestor, O bird, and his two sons were righteous.
Sugriva and Vali, both mighty sons, were his; Vali, my father, became renowned in the world for his deeds.
The king of the whole world, a great chariot-warrior of the Ikshvaku line, Rama, son of Dasharatha, entered the Dandaka forest.
With his brother Lakshmana and his wife Sita, devoted to his father's command, he followed the path of righteousness.
His wife was seized by Ravana with force from Janasthana; Rama's father's friend was the king of vultures named Jatayu.
He saw Sita, the daughter of Videha, being carried away through the sky; having made Ravana lose his chariot and set Maithili down, weary and old, he was slain in battle by Ravana.
Thus, that vulture was killed by the powerful Ravana; honored by Rama, he attained the highest state.
Then Rama formed a friendship with my uncle Sugriva, the great-souled one; he killed my father.
My father had confined Sugriva with his counselors; then Rama killed Vali and installed Sugriva.
Thus established in the kingdom by him, Sugriva became lord of the monkeys; by him, we chief monkeys were sent out.
Thus, sent by Rama, we searched everywhere; but we could not find Sita, as one cannot see the sun's rays at night.
We thoroughly searched the Dandaka forest, but unknowingly entered a cave opened in the earth.
While searching, we entered that cave created by Maya's magic; there, the month allotted by the king passed away.
