त्वां नैते ह्यनुरञ्जेयुः प्रत्यक्षं प्रवदामि ते। यथायं जाम्बवान् नीलः सुहोत्रश्च महाकपिः
They would not win your favor—this I tell you plainly—just as Jāmbavān, Nīla, and the great monkey Suhotra would not.
नह्यहं ते इमे सर्वे सामदानादिभिर्गुणैः। दण्डेन न त्वया शक्याः सुग्रीवादपकर्षितुम्
Neither I nor any of these can be drawn away from Sugrīva by conciliation, gifts, or other means; nor can you remove them by force.
विगृह्यासनमप्याहुर्दुर्बलेन बलीयसा। आत्मरक्षाकरस्तस्मान्न विगृह्णीत दुर्बलः
It is said that even a strong man should not seize the seat of another by force; therefore, one who is weak should never attempt it, for it leads only to self-destruction.
यां चेमां मन्यसे धात्रीमेतद् बिलमिति श्रुतम्। एतल्लक्ष्मणबाणानामीषत् कार्यं विदारणम्
This cave, which you consider your refuge, is known to us; it would be easily pierced by Lakṣmaṇa's arrows.
स्वल्पं हि कृतमिन्द्रेण क्षिपता ह्यशनिं पुरा। लक्ष्मणो निशितैर्बाणैर्भिन्द्यात् पत्रपुटं यथा
What Indra once did by hurling his thunderbolt was little; Lakṣmaṇa would shatter this leafy shelter with his sharp arrows.
लक्ष्मणस्य च नाराचा बहवः सन्ति तद्विधाः। वज्राशनिसमस्पर्शा गिरीणामपि दारकाः
Lakṣmaṇa has many such arrows, like iron shafts, whose touch is like thunderbolts and lightning, capable of splitting even mountains.
अवस्थानं यदैव त्वमासिष्यसि परंतप। तदैव हरयः सर्वे त्यक्ष्यन्ति कृतनिश्चयाः
The moment you take your stand, O subduer of foes, all the monkeys, having made up their minds, will abandon you.
स्मरन्तः पुत्रदाराणां नित्योद्विग्ना बुभुक्षिताः। खेदिता दुःखशय्याभिस्त्वां करिष्यन्ति पृष्ठतः
Remembering their sons and wives, always anxious and hungry, worn out by beds of suffering, they will turn their backs on you.
स त्वं हीनः सुहृद्भिश्च हितकामैश्च बन्धुभिः। तृणादपि भृशोद्विग्नः स्पन्दमानाद् भविष्यसि
Thus, deprived of friends and well-wishing kinsmen, you will become more agitated than a blade of grass trembling in the wind.
न च जातु न हिंस्युस्त्वां घोरा लक्ष्मणसायकाः। अपवृत्तं जिघांसन्तो महावेगा दुरासदाः
The fierce arrows of Lakṣmaṇa, swift and hard to withstand, would never harm you, even if you turned away and they sought to kill you.
अस्माभिस्तु गतं सार्धं विनीतवदुपस्थितम्। आनुपूर्व्यात्तु सुग्रीवो राज्ये त्वां स्थापयिष्यति
Having come together with us and presented yourself humbly, Sugrīva will install you in the kingdom in proper order.
धर्मराजः पितृव्यस्ते प्रीतिकामो दृढव्रतः। शुचिः सत्यप्रतिज्ञश्च स त्वां जातु न नाशयेत्
Your uncle, the king of righteousness, who desires your happiness, is steadfast in his vows, pure, and true to his word; he would never destroy you.
प्रियकामश्च ते मातुस्तदर्थं चास्य जीवितम्। तस्यापत्यं च नास्त्यन्यत् तस्मादङ्गद गम्यताम्
He desires what is pleasing to your mother, and for her sake he lives; she has no other child, so Angada, you must go.

श्रुत्वा हनुमतो वाक्यं प्रश्रितं धर्मसंहितम्। स्वामिसत्कारसंयुक्तमङ्गदो वाक्यमब्रवीत्

स्थैर्यमात्ममनःशौचमानृशंस्यमथार्जवम्। विक्रमश्चैव धैर्यं च सुग्रीवे नोपपद्यते
Steadfastness, purity of mind, compassion, and honesty, as well as valor and courage, are not found in Sugrīva.
भ्रातुर्ज्येष्ठस्य यो भार्यां जीवतो महिषीं प्रियाम्। धर्मेण मातरं यस्तु स्वीकरोति जुगुप्सितः
He who takes as his own, by law, the beloved wife of his elder brother while he lives, and treats her as his mother, is despicable.
कथं स धर्मं जानीते येन भ्रात्रा दुरात्मना। युद्धायाभिनियुक्तेन बिलस्य पिहितं मुखम्
How can he know righteousness, who, with evil intent, engaged his brother in battle and sealed the entrance to the cave?
सत्यात् पाणिगृहीतश्च कृतकर्मा महायशाः। विस्मृतो राघवो येन स कस्य सुकृतं स्मरेत्
Rāghava, who took his hand in truth, accomplished great deeds, and gained fame, has been forgotten by him; who would remember his good deeds?
लक्ष्मणस्य भयेनेह नाधर्मभयभीरुणा। आदिष्टा मार्गितुं सीता धर्मस्तस्मिन् कथं भवेत्
Out of fear of Lakṣmaṇa, not out of fear of unrighteousness, he ordered the search for Sītā; how can there be righteousness in him?
तस्मिन् पापे कृतघ्ने तु स्मृतिभिन्ने चलात्मनि। आर्यः को विश्वसेज्जातु तत्कुलीनो विशेषतः
In one who is sinful, ungrateful, forgetful, and fickle-minded, who among the noble would ever trust him, especially those of noble lineage?
राज्ये पुत्रः प्रतिष्ठाप्यः सगुणो निर्गुणोऽपि वा। कथं शत्रुकुलीनं मां सुग्रीवो जीवयिष्यति
A son should be established in the kingdom, whether he has virtues or not; how will Sugrīva allow me, born of an enemy's line, to live?
भिन्नमन्त्रोऽपराद्धश्च भिन्नशक्तिः कथं ह्यहम्। किष्किन्धां प्राप्य जीवेयमनाथ इव दुर्बलः
With my counsel broken, having erred, and my power divided, how could I live in Kiṣkindhā, weak and without support?
उपांशुदण्डेन हि मां बन्धनेनोपपादयेत्। शठः क्रूरो नृशंसश्च सुग्रीवो राज्यकारणात्
Sugrīva, cruel, deceitful, and merciless, would subject me to secret punishment and bondage for the sake of the kingdom.
बन्धनाच्चावसादान्मे श्रेयः प्रायोपवेशनम्। अनुजानन्तु मां सर्वे गृहं गच्छन्तु वानराः
For me, imprisonment and humiliation would be worse than fasting unto death; let all the monkeys permit me, and return home.
अहं वः प्रतिजानामि न गमिष्याम्यहं पुरीम्। इहैव प्रायमासिष्ये श्रेयो मरणमेव मे
I promise you, I will not go to the city; I will remain here, fasting unto death, for dying is better for me.
अभिवादनपूर्वं तु राजा कुशलमेव च। अभिवादनपूर्वं तु राघवौ बलशालिनौ
With proper greeting, the king and his welfare; with proper greeting, the two mighty Rāghavas—
वाच्यस्तातो यवीयान् मे सुग्रीवो वानरेश्वरः। आरोग्यपूर्वं कुशलं वाच्या माता रुमा च मे
You must greet my younger brother Sugriva, lord of the monkeys, on my behalf; also convey my regards and wishes for health to my mother and to Rumā.
मातरं चैव मे तारामाश्वासयितुमर्हथ। प्रकृत्या प्रियपुत्रा सा सानुक्रोशा तपस्विनी
And you should comfort my mother Tara as well; by nature, she is devoted to her son, compassionate, and devoted to austerity.
विनष्टमिह मां श्रुत्वा व्यक्तं हास्यति जीवितम्। एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं वृद्धांस्तानभिवाद्य च
Upon hearing that I am lost here, she will surely give up her life; having spoken thus, and after bowing to the elders,
