अनिर्वेदं च दाक्ष्यं च मनसश्चापराजयम्। कार्यसिद्धिकराण्याहुस्तस्मादेतद् ब्रवीम्यहम्
They say that perseverance, skill, and an undefeated mind bring success in action; therefore, I speak this to you.
अद्यापीदं वनं दुर्गं विचिन्वन्तु वनौकसः। खेदं त्यक्त्वा पुनः सर्वं वनमेव विचिन्वताम्
Even now, let the forest-dwellers search this difficult forest, abandoning fatigue, and again let all search the entire forest.
अवश्यं कुर्वतां तस्य दृश्यते कर्मणः फलम्। परं निर्वेदमागम्य नहि नोन्मीलनं क्षमम्
Certainly, those who persist in their efforts see the fruit of their actions; but if one falls into despair, there is no possibility of accomplishment.
सुग्रीवः क्रोधनो राजा तीक्ष्णदण्डश्च वानराः। भेतव्यं तस्य सततं रामस्य च महात्मनः
Sugriva, the king, is wrathful and wields harsh punishment, O Vanaras; you must always fear him and the great-souled Rama.
हितार्थमेतदुक्तं वः क्रियतां यदि रोचते। उच्यतां हि क्षमं यत् तत् सर्वेषामेव वानराः
This has been spoken for your welfare; let it be done if it pleases you. If there is anything suitable, let it be spoken by all the Vanaras.
अङ्गदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा वचनं गन्धमादनः। उवाच व्यक्तया वाचा पिपासाश्रमखिन्नया
Hearing Angada’s words, Gandhamadana replied with clear speech, though weary from thirst and exertion.
सदृशं खलु वो वाक्यमङ्गदो यदुवाच ह। हितं चैवानुकूलं च क्रियतामस्य भाषितम्
Indeed, what Angada has spoken is fitting for you; it is both beneficial and agreeable—let his words be carried out.
पुनर्मार्गामहे शैलान् कन्दरांश्च शिलांस्तथा। काननानि च शून्यानि गिरिप्रस्रवणानि च
Let us search again the mountains, caves, rocks, the deserted forests, and the mountain streams.
यथोद्दिष्टानि सर्वाणि सुग्रीवेण महात्मना। विचिन्वन्तु वनं सर्वे गिरिदुर्गाणि संगताः
All the places designated by the great-souled Sugriva, let everyone search the forest and the mountain strongholds together.
ततः समुत्थाय पुनर्वानरास्ते महाबलाः। विन्ध्यकाननसंकीर्णां विचेरुर्दक्षिणां दिशम्
Then those mighty Vanaras rose up again and searched the southern direction, thick with the forests of the Vindhya mountains.
ते शारदाभ्रप्रतिमं श्रीमद्रजतपर्वतम्। शृङ्गवन्तं दरीवन्तमधिरुह्य च वानराः
The Vanaras climbed the splendid silver mountain, resembling autumn clouds, full of peaks and caves.
तत्र लोध्रवनं रम्यं सप्तपर्णवनानि च। विचिन्वन्तो हरिवराः सीतादर्शनकांक्षिणः
Desiring to see Sita, the best of the monkeys searched the delightful lodhra groves and the groves of seven-leaved trees there.
तस्याग्रमधिरूढास्ते श्रान्ता विपुलविक्रमाः। न पश्यन्ति स्म वैदेहीं रामस्य महिषीं प्रियाम्
Having climbed to the summit, those mighty and weary ones did not see Vaidehi, Rama’s beloved queen.
ते तु दृष्टिगतं दृष्ट्वा तं शैलं बहुकन्दरम्। अध्यारोहन्त हरयो वीक्षमाणाः समन्ततः
But seeing that mountain, full of many caves, within their sight, the monkeys climbed it, looking all around.
अवरुह्य ततो भूमिं श्रान्ता विगतचेतसः। स्थिता मुहूर्तं तत्राथ वृक्षमूलमुपाश्रिताः
Then, descending to the ground, exhausted and their minds spent, they stood for a moment there, taking shelter at the foot of a tree.
ते मुहूर्तं समाश्वस्ताः किंचिद्भग्नपरिश्रमाः। पुनरेवोद्यताः कृत्स्नां मार्गितुं दक्षिणां दिशम्
Having rested for a moment, their fatigue somewhat eased, they again set out to search the entire southern direction.
हनुमत्प्रमुखास्तावत् प्रस्थिताः प्लवगर्षभाः। विन्ध्यमेवादितः कृत्वा विचेरुश्च समन्ततः
Then, led by Hanuman, those foremost of monkeys departed, making the Vindhya their starting point, and searched all around.

Hear now the fiftieth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Kiṣkindhā Kāṇḍa.
सह ताराङ्गदाभ्यां तु संगम्य हनुमान् कपिः। विचिनोति च विन्ध्यस्य गुहाश्च गहनानि च
The monkey Hanuman, together with Tara and Angada, searched the caves and dense thickets of the Vindhya.
सिंहशार्दूलजुष्टाश्च गुहाश्च परितस्तदा। विषमेषु नगेन्द्रस्य महाप्रस्रवणेषु च
There, all around, were caves inhabited by lions and tigers, and steep places with great waterfalls on that mountain.
आसेदुस्तस्य शैलस्य कोटिं दक्षिणपश्चिमाम्। तेषां तत्रैव वसतां स कालो व्यत्यवर्तत
They reached the southwestern peak of that mountain, and while they stayed there, that time passed for them.
स हि देशो दुरन्वेष्यो गुहागहनवान् महान्। तत्र वायुसुतः सर्वं विचिनोति स्म पर्वतम्
For that region was difficult to search, vast, filled with caves and thickets; there, the son of the wind searched the entire mountain.
परस्परेण रहिता अन्योन्यस्याविदूरतः। गजो गवाक्षो गवयः शरभो गन्धमादनः
Separated from each other, yet not far apart, were Gaja, Gavaksha, Gavaya, Sharabha, and Gandhamadana.
मैन्दश्च द्विविदश्चैव हनूमान् जाम्बवानपि। अङ्गदो युवराजश्च तारश्च वनगोचरः
Mainda and Dvivida, as well as Hanuman, Jambavan, Angada the prince, and Tara, the forest-dweller, were also there.
गिरिजालावृतान् देशान् मार्गित्वा दक्षिणां दिशम्। विचिन्वन्तस्ततस्तत्र ददृशुर्विवृतं बिलम्
Having searched the regions covered with mountain ranges in the southern direction, they then saw an open cave.
दुर्गमृक्षबिलं नाम दानवेनाभिरक्षितम्। क्षुत्पिपासापरीतास्तु श्रान्तास्तु सलिलार्थिनः
It was the difficult-to-enter cave called Durgamṛkṣa, guarded by a demon; afflicted by hunger and thirst, weary, and seeking water, they approached.
अवकीर्णं लतावृक्षैर्ददृशुस्ते महाबिलम्। तत्र क्रौञ्चाश्च हंसाश्च सारसाश्चापि निष्क्रमन्
They saw that great cave, overgrown with creepers and trees; there, cranes, swans, and sarasa birds were coming out.
जलार्द्राश्चक्रवाकाश्च रक्ताङ्गाः पद्मरेणुभिः। ततस्तद् बिलमासाद्य सुगन्धि दुरतिक्रमम्
There were also chakravaka ducks, wet from the water, their bodies reddened by lotus pollen; then, reaching that fragrant and hard-to-pass cave—
विस्मयव्यग्रमनसो बभूवुर्वानरर्षभाः। संजातपरिशङ्कास्ते तद् बिलं प्लवगोत्तमाः
The foremost monkeys became filled with wonder and anxiety; those best of monkeys grew suspicious of that cave.
अभ्यपद्यन्त संहृष्टास्तेजोवन्तो महाबलाः। नानासत्त्वसमाकीर्णं दैत्येन्द्रनिलयोपमम्
Yet, delighted and full of vigor, those mighty ones entered, a place crowded with many creatures, resembling the abode of the lord of demons.
