त्रीन् पथो हेतुना केन प्लावयेल्लोकपावनी । कथं गङ्गां त्रिपथगा विश्रुता सरिदुत्तमा ॥१-३६-
By what cause does the purifier of worlds, Gaṅgā, flow in three paths? How did the renowned Gaṅgā, best of rivers, become known as the threefold-flowing one?
त्रिषु लोकेषु धर्मज्ञ कर्मभिः कैः समन्विता । तथा ब्रुवति काकुत्स्थे विश्वामित्रस्तपोधनः ॥१-३६-
In the three worlds, O knower of dharma, by what deeds and with whose association did she act? As the descendant of Kakutstha spoke thus, Viśvāmitra, rich in austerity, replied.
निखिलेन कथां सर्वामृषिमध्ये न्यवेदयत् । पुरा राम कृतोद्वाहः शितिकण्ठो महातपाः ॥१-३६-
In the midst of the sages, he narrated the entire story in full: Long ago, O Rāma, the great ascetic Śitikaṇṭha was newly wed.
दृष्ट्वा च भगवान् देवीं मैथुनायोपचक्रमे । तस्य संक्रीडमानस्य महादेवस्य धीमतः । शितिकण्ठस्य देवस्य दिव्यं वर्षशतं गतम् ॥१-३६-
Beholding the goddess, the blessed Lord engaged in union with her; as the great and wise Mahadeva, the blue-throated god, sported thus, a hundred divine years passed.
न चापि तनयो राम तस्यामासीत् परंतप । सर्वे देवाः समुद्युक्ताः पितामहपुरोगमाः ॥१-३६-
Yet, O Rama, no son was born to her, scorcher of foes; then all the gods, led by the Grandsire, became greatly concerned.
यदिहोत्पद्यते भूतं कस्तत् प्रतिसहिष्यति । अभिगम्य सुराः सर्वे प्रणिपत्येदमब्रुवन् ॥१-३६-
"If a being is born here, who will be able to withstand it?" So, all the gods approached, bowed down, and spoke thus:
देवदेव महादेव लोकस्यास्य हिते रत । सुराणां प्रणिपातेन प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१-३६-
"O God of gods, great Lord, who delights in the welfare of the world, by our prostration, you ought to show us your favor."
न लोका धारयिष्यन्ति तव तेजः सुरोत्तम । ब्राह्मेण तपसा युक्तो देव्या सह तपश्चर ॥१-३६-
"The worlds will not be able to bear your energy, O best of gods; endowed with Brahma's austerity, practice penance together with the goddess."
त्रैलोक्यहितकामार्थं तेजस्तेजसि धारय । रक्ष सर्वानिमाँल्लोकान् नालोकं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१-३६-
"For the good of the three worlds, restrain your energy within energy; protect all these worlds—you must not render the worlds uninhabitable."
देवतानां वचः श्रुत्वा सर्वलोकमहेश्वरः । बाढमित्यब्रवीत् सर्वान् पुनश्चेदमुवाच ह ॥१-३६-
Hearing the words of the gods, the great Lord of all worlds replied, "So be it," to them all, and then spoke again:
धारयिष्याम्यहं तेजस्तेजसैव सहोमया । त्रिदशाः पृथिवी चैव निर्वाणमधिगच्छतु ॥१-३६-
"I shall restrain my energy with energy itself, along with the goddess; let the gods and the earth attain peace."
यदिदं क्षुभितं स्थानान्मम तेजो ह्यनुत्तमम् । धारयिष्यति कस्तन्मे ब्रुवन्तु सुरसत्तमाः ॥१-३६-
"This supreme energy of mine, which has been stirred from its place—who will bear it? Let the best of the gods tell me this."
एवमुक्तास्ततो देवाः प्रत्यूचुर्वृषभध्वजम् । यत्तेजः क्षुभितं ह्यद्य तद्धरा धारयिष्यति ॥१-३६-
Thus addressed, the gods replied to the Bull-bannered One, "The energy of yours that has been stirred today, the earth will bear it."
एवमुक्तः सुरपतिः प्रमुमोच महाबलः । तेजसा पृथिवी येन व्याप्ता सगिरिकानना ॥१-३६-
Thus spoken to, the mighty Lord of the gods released his great energy, by which the earth, with its mountains and forests, was filled.
ततो देवाः पुनरिदमूचुश्चापि हुताशनम् । आविश त्वं महातेजो रौद्रं वायुसमन्वितः ॥१-३६-
Then again the gods spoke these words to Agni: "Enter, you of great energy, fierce and accompanied by wind."
तदग्निना पुनर्व्याप्तं संजातं श्वेतपर्वतम् । दिव्यं शरवणं चैव पावकादित्यसंनिभम् ॥१-३६-
Then, filled again by Agni, there arose the White Mountain and the divine Saravana, shining like fire and the sun.
यत्र जातो महातेजाः कार्तिकेयोऽग्निसम्भवः । अथोमां च शिवं चैव देवाः सर्षिगणास्तदा ॥१-३६-
There was born the greatly radiant Kartikeya, sprung from Agni; then, at that time, the gods along with the hosts of sages worshipped Uma and Shiva.
पूजयामासुरत्यर्थं सुप्रीतमनसस्तदा । अथ शैलसुता राम त्रिदशानिदमब्रवीत् ॥१-३६-
They worshipped them with great devotion, their minds exceedingly pleased; then, O Rama, the daughter of the mountain spoke these words to the gods:
समन्युरशपत् सर्वान् क्रोधसंरक्तलोचना । यस्मान्निवारिता चाहं संगता पुत्रकाम्यया ॥१-३६-
With anger, her eyes reddened with rage, she cursed them all: "Because I was restrained, though I had joined for the sake of a child—"
अपत्यं स्वेषु दारेषु नोत्पादयितुमर्हथ । अद्यप्रभृति युष्माकमप्रजाः सन्तु पत्नयः ॥१-३६-
"You shall not beget offspring in your own wives; from this day forth, may your wives be childless."
एवमुक्त्वा सुरान् सर्वाञ्शशाप पृथिवीमपि । अवने नैकरूपा त्वं बहुभार्या भविष्यसि ॥१-३६-
Having thus cursed all the gods, she also cursed the earth: "O earth, you shall not have a single form; you shall become one with many wives."
न च पुत्रकृतां प्रीतिं मत्क्रोधकलुषीकृता । प्राप्स्यसि त्वं सुदुर्मेधो मम पुत्रमनिच्छती ॥१-३६-
And you, whose mind is so clouded, will not obtain the joy that comes from a son, for you do not desire my son and have angered me.
तान् सर्वान् पीडितान् दृष्ट्वा सुरान् सुरपतिस्तदा । गमनायोपचक्राम दिशं वरुणपालिताम् ॥१-३६-
Seeing all the gods afflicted, the lord of the gods then set out toward the region guarded by Varuṇa.
स गत्वा तप आतिष्ठत् पार्श्वे तस्योत्तरे गिरेः । हिमवत्प्रभवे शृङ्गे सह देव्या महेश्वरः ॥१-३६-
Having gone there, the great lord Śiva undertook austerities on the northern slope of that mountain, on a peak born of Himavat, together with the goddess.
एष ते विस्तरो राम शैलपुत्र्या निवेदितः गङ्गायाः प्रभवं चैव शृणु मे सहलक्ष्मण ॥१-३६-
O Rāma, this account has been related to you by the daughter of the mountain; now listen to me, along with Lakṣmaṇa, as I tell of the origin of Gaṅgā.

The thirty-seventh chapter is to be heard.
तप्यमाने तदा देवे सेन्द्राः साग्निपुरोगमाः । सेनापतिमभीप्सन्तः पितामहमुपागमन् ॥१-३७-
While the god was performing austerities, the gods, along with Indra and Agni at their head, approached the Grandfather, desiring a commander for their army.
ततोऽब्रुवन् सुराः सर्वे भगवन्तं पितामहम् । प्रणिपत्य सुराराम सेन्द्राः साग्निपुरोगमाः ॥१-३७-
Then all the gods, along with Indra and Agni at their head, bowed down to the blessed Grandfather and spoke these words.
येन सेनापतिर्देव दत्तो भगवता पुरा । स तपः परमास्थाय तप्यते स्म सहोमया ॥१-३७-
O god, the commander of the army whom you once appointed is now engaged in severe austerities together with his wife.
यदत्रानन्तरं कार्यं लोकानां हितकाम्यया । संविधत्स्व विधानज्ञ त्वं हि नः परमा गतिः ॥१-३७-
Whatever must now be done for the welfare of the worlds, arrange it, O knower of order, for you are our supreme refuge.
