न चात्र वृक्षा नौषध्यो न वल्ल्यो नापि वीरुधः। स्निग्धपत्राः स्थले यत्र पद्मिन्यः फुल्लपङ्कजाः
There are no trees or medicinal herbs, no creepers nor even grasses; only on the ground are lotus ponds with blooming lotuses and glossy leaves.
प्रेक्षणीयाः सुगन्धाश्च भ्रमरैश्च विवर्जिताः। कण्डुर्नाम महाभागः सत्यवादी तपोधनः
They are beautiful to behold and fragrant, yet untouched by bees; there lived a great sage named Kaṇḍu, a truth-speaker, rich in ascetic power.
महर्षिः परमामर्षी नियमैर्दुष्प्रधर्षणः। तस्य तस्मिन् वने पुत्रो बालको दशवार्षिकः
A great seer, exceedingly strict, unassailable through his vows; in that forest, his ten-year-old son disappeared, destined to die.
प्रणष्टो जीवितान्ताय क्रुद्धस्तेन महामुनिः। तेन धर्मात्मना शप्तं कृत्स्नं तत्र महद्वनम्
Enraged by this, the great sage, devoted to righteousness, cursed that entire great forest.
अशरण्यं दुराधर्षं मृगपक्षिविवर्जितम्। तस्य ते काननान्तांस्तु गिरीणां कन्दराणि च
It became desolate, unapproachable, devoid of beasts and birds; so you must search the forest edges and the mountain caves there.
प्रभवाणि नदीनां च विचिन्वन्ति समाहिताः। तत्र चापि महात्मानो नापश्यञ्जनकात्मजाम्
With focused minds, they searched the sources of the rivers and the mountain caves; but even there, those great souls did not find Janaka's daughter.
हर्तारं रावणं वापि सुग्रीवप्रियकारिणः। ते प्रविश्य तु तं भीमं लतागुल्मसमावृतम्
Nor did they see the abductor, Rāvaṇa, who had done what was pleasing to Sugrīva.
ददृशुर्भीमकर्माणमसुरं सुरनिर्भयम्। तं दृष्ट्वा वानरा घोरं स्थितं शैलमिवासुरम्
Entering that fearsome place, thick with vines and shrubs, they saw a terrifying, fearless demon.
गाढं परिहिताः सर्वे दृष्ट्वा तं पर्वतोपमम्। सोऽपि तान् वानरान् सर्वान् नष्टाः स्थेत्यब्रवीद् बली
Seeing that demon, like a mountain, all the monkeys withdrew in fear; but the powerful demon, seeing all the monkeys, said, 'You are lost!'
अभ्यधावत संक्रुद्धो मुष्टिमुद्यम्य संगतम्। तमापतन्तं सहसा वालिपुत्रोऽङ्गदस्तदा
Enraged, he rushed at them, raising his clenched fist; but then Vāli's son, Aṅgada, suddenly struck him.
रावणोऽयमिति ज्ञात्वा तलेनाभिजघान ह। स वालिपुत्राभिहतो वक्त्राच्छोणितमुद्वमन्
Recognizing him as Rāvaṇa, Aṅgada struck him with his palm.
असुरो न्यपतद् भूमौ पर्यस्त इव पर्वतः। ते तु तस्मिन् निरुच्छ्वासे वानरा जितकाशिनः
Struck by Vāli's son, the demon fell to the ground, vomiting blood from his mouth, like a toppled mountain.
व्यचिन्वन् प्रायशस्तत्र सर्वं ते गिरिगह्वरम्। विचितं तु ततः सर्वं सर्वे ते काननौकसः
With the demon lifeless, the victorious monkeys searched thoroughly throughout the mountain caves.
अन्यदेवापरं घोरं विविशुर्गिरिगह्वरम्। ते विचित्य पुनः खिन्ना विनिष्पत्य समागताः। एकान्ते वृक्षमूले तु निषेदुर्दीनमानसाः
Having searched everywhere, all those dwellers of the forest entered another dreadful mountain cave; after searching, exhausted, they came out and gathered together, sitting sadly at the foot of a tree in solitude.

Hear now the forty-ninth canto.
अथाङ्गदस्तदा सर्वान् वानरानिदमब्रवीत्। परिश्रान्तो महाप्राज्ञः समाश्वास्य शनैर्वचः
Then Aṅgada, wise and weary, gently encouraged all the monkeys and spoke these words.
वनानि गिरयो नद्यो दुर्गाणि गहनानि च। दरी गिरिगुहाश्चैव विचिताः सर्वमन्ततः
Forests, mountains, rivers, and all the difficult, dense places, the ravines and mountain caves — all have been thoroughly searched.
तत्र तत्र सहास्माभिर्जानकी न च दृश्यते। तथा रक्षोऽपहर्ता च सीतायाश्चैव दुष्कृती
Though we have searched everywhere, we do not see Janaki, nor the wicked demon who abducted Sita.
कालश्च नो महान् यातः सुग्रीवश्चोग्रशासनः। तस्माद् भवन्तः सहिता विचिन्वन्तु समन्ततः
A long time has passed for us, and Sugriva is a king of fierce commands; therefore, all of you together should search in every direction.
विहाय तन्द्रीं शोकं च निद्रां चैव समुत्थिताम्। विचिनुध्वं तथा सीतां पश्यामो जनकात्मजाम्
Casting off drowsiness, sorrow, and the sleep that has arisen, search for Sita in such a way that we may see the daughter of Janaka.
अनिर्वेदं च दाक्ष्यं च मनसश्चापराजयम्। कार्यसिद्धिकराण्याहुस्तस्मादेतद् ब्रवीम्यहम्
They say that perseverance, skill, and an undefeated mind bring success in action; therefore, I speak this to you.
अद्यापीदं वनं दुर्गं विचिन्वन्तु वनौकसः। खेदं त्यक्त्वा पुनः सर्वं वनमेव विचिन्वताम्
Even now, let the forest-dwellers search this difficult forest, abandoning fatigue, and again let all search the entire forest.
अवश्यं कुर्वतां तस्य दृश्यते कर्मणः फलम्। परं निर्वेदमागम्य नहि नोन्मीलनं क्षमम्
Certainly, those who persist in their efforts see the fruit of their actions; but if one falls into despair, there is no possibility of accomplishment.
सुग्रीवः क्रोधनो राजा तीक्ष्णदण्डश्च वानराः। भेतव्यं तस्य सततं रामस्य च महात्मनः
Sugriva, the king, is wrathful and wields harsh punishment, O Vanaras; you must always fear him and the great-souled Rama.
हितार्थमेतदुक्तं वः क्रियतां यदि रोचते। उच्यतां हि क्षमं यत् तत् सर्वेषामेव वानराः
This has been spoken for your welfare; let it be done if it pleases you. If there is anything suitable, let it be spoken by all the Vanaras.
अङ्गदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा वचनं गन्धमादनः। उवाच व्यक्तया वाचा पिपासाश्रमखिन्नया
Hearing Angada’s words, Gandhamadana replied with clear speech, though weary from thirst and exertion.
सदृशं खलु वो वाक्यमङ्गदो यदुवाच ह। हितं चैवानुकूलं च क्रियतामस्य भाषितम्
Indeed, what Angada has spoken is fitting for you; it is both beneficial and agreeable—let his words be carried out.
पुनर्मार्गामहे शैलान् कन्दरांश्च शिलांस्तथा। काननानि च शून्यानि गिरिप्रस्रवणानि च
Let us search again the mountains, caves, rocks, the deserted forests, and the mountain streams.
यथोद्दिष्टानि सर्वाणि सुग्रीवेण महात्मना। विचिन्वन्तु वनं सर्वे गिरिदुर्गाणि संगताः
All the places designated by the great-souled Sugriva, let everyone search the forest and the mountain strongholds together.
ततः समुत्थाय पुनर्वानरास्ते महाबलाः। विन्ध्यकाननसंकीर्णां विचेरुर्दक्षिणां दिशम्
Then those mighty Vanaras rose up again and searched the southern direction, thick with the forests of the Vindhya mountains.
