स मां जिघांसुर्दुष्टात्मा वाली प्रव्यथितेन्द्रियः। परिकालयते वाली धावन्तं सचिवैः सह
But Vāli, with evil intent and disturbed senses, sought to kill me; he pursued me as I fled with my ministers.
ततोऽहं वालिना तेन सोऽनुबद्धः प्रधावितः। नदीश्च विविधाः पश्यन् वनानि नगराणि च
Then, pursued and driven by Vāli, I ran, seeing various rivers, forests, and cities.
आदर्शतलसंकाशा ततो वै पृथिवी मया। अलातचक्रप्रतिमा दृष्टा गोष्पदवत् कृता
Then, to me, the earth appeared like the surface of a mirror, like a whirling firebrand, made as small as a cow's hoofprint.
पूर्वां दिशं ततो गत्वा पश्यामि विविधान् द्रुमान्। पर्वतान् सदरीन् रम्यान् सरांसि विविधानि च
Then, going towards the eastern direction, I beheld various kinds of trees, delightful mountains with rivers, and many different lakes.
उदयं तत्र पश्यामि पर्वतं धातुमण्डितम्। क्षीरोदं सागरं चैव नित्यमप्सरसालयम्
There I saw the mountain of sunrise, adorned with minerals, and the Milk Ocean, ever the abode of celestial nymphs.
परिकाल्यमानस्तु तदा वालिनाभिद्रुतो ह्यहम्। पुनरावृत्य सहसा प्रस्थितोऽहं तदा विभो
But then, pursued and harassed by Vali, I was forced to turn back suddenly, O lord.
दिशस्तस्यास्ततो भूयः प्रस्थितो दक्षिणां दिशम्। विन्ध्यपादपसंकीर्णां चन्दनद्रुमशोभिताम्
After that, I set out again towards the southern direction, filled with the roots of the Vindhya mountains and beautified by sandalwood trees.
द्रुमशैलान्तरे पश्यन् भूयो दक्षिणतोऽपराम्। अपरां च दिशं प्राप्तो वालिना समभिद्रुतः
Looking among the trees and mountains, I went further south to another region, but again was pursued by Vali.
स पश्यन् विविधान् देशानस्तं च गिरिसत्तमम्। प्राप्य चास्तं गिरिश्रेष्ठमुत्तरं सम्प्रधावितः
Observing various lands and that excellent mountain, I reached the great western mountain and was driven northward.
हिमवन्तं च मेरुं च समुद्रं च तथोत्तरम्। यदा न विन्दे शरणं वालिना समभिद्रुतः
I saw the Himalayas, Meru, and the northern ocean, but, pursued by Vali, I found no refuge.
ततो मां बुद्धिसम्पन्नो हनुमान् वाक्यमब्रवीत्। इदानीं मे स्मृतं राजन् यथा वाली हरीश्वरः
Then Hanuman, wise in counsel, spoke to me: 'Now I remember, O King, how Vali, lord of the monkeys—'
मतङ्गेन तदा शप्तो ह्यस्मिन्नाश्रममण्डले। प्रविशेद् यदि वै वाली मूर्धास्य शतधा भवेत्
'—was cursed by Matanga, that if Vali should enter this hermitage, his head would be shattered into a hundred pieces.'
तत्र वासः सुखोऽस्माकं निरुद्विग्नो भविष्यति। ततः पर्वतमासाद्य ऋष्यमूकं नृपात्मज
'Here, our dwelling will be safe and free from fear.' Then, O prince, we reached the mountain Rishyamuka.
न विवेश तदा वाली मतङ्गस्य भयात् तदा। एवं मया तदा राजन् प्रत्यक्षमुपलक्षितम्। पृथिवीमण्डलं सर्वं गुहामस्म्यागतस्ततः
Vali did not enter then, out of fear of Matanga. Thus, O King, I witnessed all this directly, and so I came to dwell in this cave, having traversed the whole earth.

Hear now the forty-seventh sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Kiṣkindhā Kāṇḍa.
दर्शनार्थं तु वैदेह्याः सर्वतः कपिकुञ्जराः। व्यादिष्टाः कपिराजेन यथोक्तं जग्मुरञ्जसा
Then, for the sake of finding Sita, the monkey leaders, as ordered by the monkey king, set out swiftly in all directions.
ते सरांसि सरित्कक्षानाकाशं नगराणि च। नदीदुर्गांस्तथा देशान् विचिन्वन्ति समन्ततः
They searched everywhere—lakes, riverbanks, the sky, cities, and regions difficult to access by rivers.
सुग्रीवेण समाख्याताः सर्वे वानरयूथपाः। तत्र देशान् विचिन्वन्ति सशैलवनकाननान्
All the monkey chiefs, instructed by Sugriva, searched those regions, including mountains, forests, and groves.
विचित्य दिवसं सर्वे सीताधिगमने धृताः। समायान्ति स्म मेदिन्यां निशाकालेषु वानराः
Having searched the whole day, intent on finding Sita, the monkeys would gather on the earth at night.
सर्वर्तुकांश्च देशेषु वानराः सफलद्रुमान्। आसाद्य रजनीं शय्यां चक्रुः सर्वेष्वहःसु ते
In every region, the monkeys found fruitful trees in all seasons, and at night they made their beds there each day.
तदहः प्रथमं कृत्वा मासे प्रस्रवणं गताः। कपिराजेन संगम्य निराशाः कपिकुञ्जराः
Having completed the first day, the monkey leaders, after meeting with the monkey king, went to the Prasravana mountain, though they were without hope.
विचित्य तु दिशं पूर्वां यथोक्तां सचिवैः सह। अदृष्ट्वा विनतः सीतामाजगाम महाबलः
Having searched the eastern direction as instructed, together with his counselors, the mighty one returned, not having seen Sita.
दिशमप्युत्तरां सर्वां विविच्य स महाकपिः। आगतः सह सैन्येन भीतः शतबलिस्तदा
That great monkey, having thoroughly searched the entire northern direction, came back with his army, afraid at that time.
सुषेणः पश्चिमामाशां विविच्य सह वानरैः। समेत्य मासे पूर्णे तु सुग्रीवमुपचक्रमे
Sushena, having searched the western quarter together with the monkeys, approached Sugriva at the completion of the month.
तं प्रस्रवणपृष्ठस्थं समासाद्याभिवाद्य च। आसीनं सह रामेण सुग्रीवमिदमब्रुवन्
Having approached and respectfully greeted Sugriva, who was seated with Rama on the Prasravana mountain, they spoke these words.
विचिताः पर्वताः सर्वे वनानि गहनानि च। निम्नगाः सागरान्ताश्च सर्वे जनपदाश्च ये
All the mountains have been searched, as well as the dense forests, the rivers ending in the sea, and all the inhabited regions.
गुहाश्च विचिताः सर्वा याश्च ते परिकीर्तिताः। विचिताश्च महागुल्मा लताविततसंतताः
All the caves that were mentioned by you have been searched, as well as the great thickets covered with spreading creepers.
गहनेषु च देशेषु दुर्गेषु विषमेषु च। सत्त्वान्यतिप्रमाणानि विचितानि हतानि च। ये चैव गहना देशा विचितास्ते पुनः पुनः
In remote, difficult, and uneven places, creatures of immense size have been found and slain; and those inaccessible regions have been searched again and again.
उदारसत्त्वाभिजनो हनूमान् स मैथिलीं ज्ञास्यति वानरेन्द्र। दिशं तु यामेव गता तु सीता तामास्थितो वायुसुतो हनूमान्
Hanuman, born of a noble and mighty lineage, will surely discover Maithili; the son of the wind, Hanuman, has set out in the very direction where Sita has gone.
