Thus urged by the king, all the leaders of the monkey troops, each intent on their own direction, quickly set out.
Roaring, bellowing, and shouting, the mighty monkeys, making loud noises and running, cried out as they went.
Thus urged by the king, all the leaders of the monkey troops declared, 'We will bring back Sītā and we will slay Rāvaṇa.'
'I alone will slay Rāvaṇa if he comes to battle, and then, having swiftly defeated him, I will bring back the daughter of Janaka.'
'Even if she is trembling from exhaustion, you must remain firm; I alone will bring back Jānakī even from the netherworld.'
I will shatter trees, I will split mountains, I will rend the earth, I will agitate the oceans.
I can leap a distance measured in yojanas, of this there is no doubt; indeed, I can cross even a hundred yojanas and more.
Whether on the earth, in the sea, among mountains or forests, or even in the depths of the underworld, my movement cannot be hindered.
Thus, each of the mighty monkeys there, filled with strength and pride, spoke these words in the presence of the monkey king.

Hear now the forty-sixth sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Kiṣkindhā Kāṇḍa.
When the monkey lords had departed, Rāma said to Sugrīva: 'How do you know the entire expanse of the earth?'
Then Sugrīva, with a humble heart, replied to Rāma: 'Listen, I will tell you everything in detail.'
When Vāli was confronting the demon named Dundubhi, who had the form of a buffalo, he went toward the Malaya mountain.
Then that buffalo entered a cave at Malaya; Vāli also entered there, intent on killing him.
At that time, I was stationed humbly at the mouth of the cave; but Vāli did not emerge, even after a year had passed.
Then, with a rush of blood, the cave was filled; seeing this, I was astonished and overcome with grief for my brother.
Then, my mind confused, I thought my elder was surely slain; I placed a stone, like a mountain, at the entrance of the cave.
Unable to come out, the buffalo would perish; so I returned to Kiṣkindhā, having lost hope for his life.
Having gained the great kingdom, and Tara along with Rumā, I lived there with friends, free from anxiety.
Then Vāli, the foremost of monkeys, returned after killing him; out of respect and fear, I gave him back the kingdom.
But Vāli, with evil intent and disturbed senses, sought to kill me; he pursued me as I fled with my ministers.
Then, pursued and driven by Vāli, I ran, seeing various rivers, forests, and cities.
Then, to me, the earth appeared like the surface of a mirror, like a whirling firebrand, made as small as a cow's hoofprint.
Then, going towards the eastern direction, I beheld various kinds of trees, delightful mountains with rivers, and many different lakes.
There I saw the mountain of sunrise, adorned with minerals, and the Milk Ocean, ever the abode of celestial nymphs.
But then, pursued and harassed by Vali, I was forced to turn back suddenly, O lord.
After that, I set out again towards the southern direction, filled with the roots of the Vindhya mountains and beautified by sandalwood trees.
Looking among the trees and mountains, I went further south to another region, but again was pursued by Vali.
Observing various lands and that excellent mountain, I reached the great western mountain and was driven northward.
I saw the Himalayas, Meru, and the northern ocean, but, pursued by Vali, I found no refuge.
