स च सर्वैर्विचेतव्यः ससानुप्रस्थभूधरः। क्रौञ्चं गिरिमतिक्रम्य मैनाको नाम पर्वतः
That mountain, Krauñca, with its slopes, plateaus, and peaks, must be completely searched; beyond it lies the mountain called Maināka.
मयस्य भवनं तत्र दानवस्य स्वयंकृतम्। मैनाकस्तु विचेतव्यः ससानुप्रस्थकन्दरः
There is the mansion of Maya, the Dānava, built by himself; Maināka, with its slopes, plateaus, and caves, must also be searched.
स्त्रीणामश्वमुखीनां तु निकेतस्तत्र तत्र तु। तं देशं समतिक्रम्य आश्रमं सिद्धसेवितम्
There, in various places, are the dwellings of horse-faced women; passing beyond that region, there is a hermitage frequented by perfected sages.
सिद्धा वैखानसा यत्र वालखिल्याश्च तापसाः। वन्दितव्यास्ततः सिद्धास्तपसा वीतकल्मषाः
There, the Siddhas, the Vaikhānasa sages, and the ascetic Vālakhilyas reside; those sinless Siddhas, purified by austerity, must be respectfully greeted.
प्रष्टव्या चापि सीतायाः प्रवृत्तिर्विनयान्वितैः। हेमपुष्करसंछन्नं तत्र वैखानसं सरः
You should also inquire from those humble ones about Sītā’s whereabouts; there is the Vaikhānasa lake, covered with golden lotuses.
तरुणादित्यसंकाशैर्हंसैर्विचरितं शुभैः। औपवाह्यः कुबेरस्य सार्वभौम इति स्मृतः
It is frequented by beautiful swans, shining like the rising sun; it is said to be Kubera’s royal bathing place.
गजः पर्येति तं देशं सदा सह करेणुभिः। तत् सरः समतिक्रम्य नष्टचन्द्रदिवाकरम्। अनक्षत्रगणं व्योम निष्पयोदमनादितम्
An elephant, always accompanied by its females, roams that region; passing beyond that lake, you will find a sky without moon or sun, without stars, without clouds, and without beginning.
गभस्तिभिरिवार्कस्य स तु देशः प्रकाश्यते। विश्राम्यद्भिस्तपःसिद्धैर्देवकल्पैः स्वयंप्रभैः
That region is illuminated as if by the rays of the sun, by ascetics who have attained perfection, resembling gods, shining with their own radiance as they rest.
तं तु देशमतिक्रम्य शैलोदा नाम निम्नगा। उभयोस्तीरयोस्तस्याः कीचका नाम वेणवः
Beyond that region flows a river named Śailodā; on both its banks are bamboo groves called Kīcaka.
ते नयन्ति परं तीरं सिद्धान् प्रत्यानयन्ति च। उत्तराः कुरवस्तत्र कृतपुण्यप्रतिश्रयाः
Those bamboos lead the perfected beings to the far shore and bring them back again; there are the northern Kurus, a refuge for those who have performed meritorious deeds.
ततः काञ्चनपद्माभिः पद्मिनीभिः कृतोदकाः। नीलवैदूर्यपत्राढ्या नद्यस्तत्र सहस्रशः
There, thousands of rivers flow, their waters formed by golden lotuses, and their banks adorned with blue beryl leaves and lotus ponds.
रक्तोत्पलवनैश्चात्र मण्डिताश्च हिरण्मयैः। तरुणादित्यसंकाशा भान्ति तत्र जलाशयाः
There, the reservoirs of water shine, adorned with groves of red lotuses and golden ornaments, and they appear like the radiance of the rising sun.
महार्हमणिपत्रैश्च काञ्चनप्रभकेसरैः। नीलोत्पलवनैश्चित्रैः स देशः सर्वतो वृतः
That region is entirely covered with precious jeweled leaves, golden filaments, and variegated groves of blue lotuses.
निस्तुलाभिश्च मुक्ताभिर्मणिभिश्च महाधनैः। उद्धूतपुलिनास्तत्र जातरूपैश्च निम्नगाः
There, the riverbanks are strewn with incomparable pearls and great treasures of jewels, and the streams flow with gold.
नित्यपुष्पफलास्तत्र नगाः पत्ररथाकुलाः। दिव्यगन्धरसस्पर्शाः सर्वकामान् स्रवन्ति च
There, the trees are always laden with flowers and fruits, their branches thick with leaves; they possess divine fragrance, taste, and touch, and they yield every desired object.
नानाकाराणि वासांसि फलन्त्यन्ये नगोत्तमाः। मुक्तावैदूर्यचित्राणि भूषणानि तथैव च। स्त्रीणां यान्यनुरूपाणि पुरुषाणां तथैव च
Other excellent trees bear garments of various kinds, and ornaments adorned with pearls and cat's-eye gems, suitable for women and likewise for men.
सर्वर्तुसुखसेव्यानि फलन्त्यन्ये नगोत्तमाः। महार्हमणिचित्राणि फलन्त्यन्ये नगोत्तमाः
Some other excellent trees yield fruits that are enjoyable in every season, and others bear fruits adorned with precious jewels.
शयनानि प्रसूयन्ते चित्रास्तरणवन्ति च। मनःकान्तानि माल्यानि फलन्त्यत्रापरे द्रुमाः
Beds are produced there, furnished with colorful coverings, and other trees yield garlands delightful to the mind.
पानानि च महार्हाणि भक्ष्याणि विविधानि च। स्त्रियश्च गुणसम्पन्ना रूपयौवनलक्षिताः
There are exquisite drinks and various kinds of food, and women endowed with virtues, marked by beauty and youth.
गन्धर्वाः किन्नराः सिद्धा नागा विद्याधरास्तथा। रमन्ते सततं तत्र नारीभिर्भास्वरप्रभाः
Gandharvas, Kinnaras, Siddhas, Nagas, and Vidyadharas, shining with radiant splendor, always delight there together with women.
सर्वे सुकृतकर्माणः सर्वे रतिपरायणाः। सर्वे कामार्थसहिता वसन्ति सह योषितः
All are performers of virtuous deeds, all are devoted to pleasure, and all live together with women, possessing every object of desire.
गीतवादित्रनिर्घोषः सोत्कृष्टहसितस्वनः। श्रूयते सततं तत्र सर्वभूतमनोरमः
There, the sound of singing and musical instruments, accompanied by loud laughter, is always heard, enchanting to all beings.
तत्र नामुदितः कश्चिन्नात्र कश्चिदसत्प्रियः। अहन्यहनि वर्धन्ते गुणास्तत्र मनोरमाः
There, no one is ever unhappy, nor is anyone displeasing; day by day, delightful virtues increase there.
समतिक्रम्य तं देशमुत्तरः पयसां निधिः। तत्र सोमगिरिर्नाम मध्ये हेममयो महान्
Beyond that region lies the northern ocean, and in its midst stands the great golden mountain called Soma.
इन्द्रलोकगता ये च ब्रह्मलोकगताश्च ये। देवास्तं समवेक्षन्ते गिरिराजं दिवं गताः
The gods who have gone to Indra's world and those who have reached Brahma's world gaze upon that king of mountains, shining in the heavens.
स तु देशो विसूर्योऽपि तस्य भासा प्रकाशते। सूर्यलक्ष्म्याभिविज्ञेयस्तपतेव विवस्वता
Even without the sun, that region shines with its own radiance; it is recognized by the splendor of the sun and seems to burn with the brilliance of the sun itself.
भगवांस्तत्र विश्वात्मा शम्भुरेकादशात्मकः। ब्रह्मा वसति देवेशो ब्रह्मर्षिपरिवारितः
There dwells the blessed Lord, the soul of the universe, Shiva of eleven forms, the god of gods, Brahma, surrounded by the great sages.
न कथंचन गन्तव्यं कुरूणामुत्तरेण वः। अन्येषामपि भूतानां नानुक्रामति वै गतिः
You must not go beyond the northern region of the Kurus; even the other beings do not traverse further.
स हि सोमगिरिर्नाम देवानामपि दुर्गमः। तमालोक्य ततः क्षिप्रमुपावर्तितुमर्हथ
For that mountain called Soma is difficult to reach even for the gods; having seen it, you should quickly turn back from there.
एतावद् वानरैः शक्यं गन्तुं वानरपुंगवाः। अभास्करममर्यादं न जानीमस्ततः परम्
O foremost of monkeys, it is possible for monkeys to go only this far; we do not know anything beyond this sunless, boundless region.
