एतावद् वानरैः शक्यं गन्तुं वानरपुङ्गवाः। अभास्करममर्यादं न जानीमस्ततः परम्
O foremost of monkeys, it is possible to reach only this far; beyond lies a sunless, boundless realm, of which we know nothing.
अभिगम्य तु वैदेहीं निलयं रावणस्य च। मासे पूर्णे निवर्तध्वमुदयं प्राप्य पर्वतम्
Having found Vaidehī and the abode of Rāvaṇa, return after a full month, having reached the mountain of sunrise.
ऊर्ध्वं मासान्न वस्तव्यं वसन् वध्यो भवेन्मम। सिद्धार्थाः संनिवर्तध्वमधिगम्य च मैथिलीम्
Do not stay beyond a month; if you remain, you will incur my wrath. Having accomplished your purpose and found Maithilī, return.
महेन्द्रकान्तां वनषण्डमण्डितां दिशं चरित्वा निपुणेन वानराः। अवाप्य सीतां रघुवंशजप्रियां ततो निवृत्ताः सुखिनो भविष्यथ
After searching the region adorned with the Mahendra mountain and its forests, O monkeys, and having found Sītā, beloved of the Raghu lineage, you will return happily.

नीलमग्निसुतं चैव हनूमन्तं च वानरम्। पितामहसुतं चैव जाम्बवन्तं महौजसम्
He sent Nīla, the son of Agni, Hanumān the monkey, and Jāmbavān, the mighty son of the grandfather.
सुहोत्रं च शरारिं च शरगुल्मं तथैव च। गजं गवाक्षं गवयं सुषेणं वृषभं तथा
Suhotra, Sharari, Sharagulma likewise, Gaja, Gavaksha, Gavaya, Sushena, and also Vrishabha,
मैन्दं च द्विविदं चैव सुषेणं गन्धमादनम्। उल्कामुखमनङ्गं च हुताशनसुतावुभौ
Mainda and Dvivida as well, Sushena, Gandhamadana, Ulkamukha, Ananga, and both sons of Hutashana,
अङ्गदप्रमुखान् वीरान् वीरः कपिगणेश्वरः। वेगविक्रमसम्पन्नान् संदिदेश विशेषवित्
The heroic lord of the monkeys, knowledgeable in distinction, instructed the valiant ones led by Angada, endowed with speed and prowess,
तेषामग्रेसरं चैव बृहद्बलमथाङ्गदम्। विधाय हरिवीराणामादिशद् दक्षिणां दिशम्
Appointing Angada, of great strength, as the foremost among those monkey heroes, he directed them to the southern quarter.
ये केचन समुद्देशास्तस्यां दिशि सुदुर्गमाः। कपीशः कपिमुख्यानां स तेषां समुदाहरत्
Whatever difficult regions there were in that direction, the lord of the monkeys named them all for the chief monkeys.
सहस्रशिरसं विन्ध्यं नानाद्रुमलतायुतम्। नर्मदां च नदीं रम्यां महोरगनिषेविताम्
The Vindhya with a thousand peaks, filled with various trees and vines, and the lovely Narmada river, frequented by great serpents,
ततो गोदावरीं रम्यां कृष्णवेणीं महानदीम्। वरदां च महाभागां महोरगनिषेविताम्। मेखलानुत्कलांश्चैव दशार्णनगराण्यपि
Then the beautiful Godavari, the great river Krishnaveni, the illustrious Varada, also frequented by great serpents, and the cities of Mekhala, Utkala, and Dasharna,
आब्रवन्तीमवन्तीं च सर्वमेवानुपश्यत। विदर्भानृष्टिकांश्चैव रम्यान् माहिषकानपि
Abravanti and Avanti, all of them you must observe; also the Vidarbhas, Rishṭikas, and the charming Mahishakas.
तथा वङ्गान् कलिङ्गांश्च कौशिकांश्च समन्ततः। अन्वीक्ष्य दण्डकारण्यं सपर्वतनदीगुहम्
Likewise the Vangas, Kalingas, and the Kausikas all around; then search the Dandaka forest with its mountains, rivers, and caves.
नदीं गोदावरीं चैव सर्वमेवानुपश्यत। तथैवान्ध्रांश्च पुण्ड्रांश्च चोलान् पाण्ड्यांश्च केरलान्
And the river Godavari as well, observe all of it; likewise the Andhras, Pundras, Cholas, Pandyas, and Keralas.
अयोमुखश्च गन्तव्यः पर्वतो धातुमण्डितः। विचित्रशिखरः श्रीमांश्चित्रपुष्पितकाननः
You must go to Ayomukha, the mountain adorned with minerals, splendid with varied peaks and forests blooming with diverse flowers.
सुचन्दनवनोद्देशो मार्गितव्यो महागिरिः। ततस्तामापगां दिव्यां प्रसन्नसलिलाशयाम्
Search for the great mountain with its fine sandalwood groves; then the divine river with clear, tranquil waters.
तत्र द्रक्ष्यथ कावेरीं विहृतामप्सरोगणैः। तस्यासीनं नगस्याग्रे मलयस्य महौजसम्
There you will see the Kaveri, where groups of Apsaras play; at the forefront of the Malaya mountain, of great energy.
द्रक्ष्यथादित्यसंकाशमगस्त्यमृषिसत्तमम् । ततस्तेनाभ्यनुज्ञाताः प्रसन्नेन महात्मना
You will see Agastya, the foremost of sages, radiant like the sun; then, having been permitted by that gracious great soul,
ताम्रपर्णीं ग्राहजुष्टां तरिष्यथ महानदीम्। सा चन्दनवनैश्चित्रैः प्रच्छन्नद्वीपवारिणी
You will cross the great river Tamraparni, inhabited by crocodiles, its waters concealing islands and adorned with sandalwood forests.
कान्तेव युवती कान्तं समुद्रमवगाहते। ततो हेममयं दिव्यं मुक्तामणिविभूषितम्
Like a lovely maiden embracing her beloved, it enters the ocean; then you will see the divine golden gate, adorned with pearls and gems.
युक्तं कवाटं पाण्ड्यानां गता द्रक्ष्यथ वानराः। ततः समुद्रमासाद्य सम्प्रधार्यार्थनिश्चयम्
Fitted with a gate belonging to the Pandyas, you will reach it, O monkeys; then, arriving at the ocean, carefully consider your purpose.
अगस्त्येनान्तरे तत्र सागरे विनिवेशितः। चित्रसानुनगः श्रीमान् महेन्द्रः पर्वतोत्तमः
There, in the midst of the ocean, established by Agastya, is the splendid Mahendra, the foremost of mountains, with varied peaks.
जातरूपमयः श्रीमानवगाढो महार्णवम्। नानाविधैर्नगैः फुल्लैर्लताभिश्चोपशोभितम्
There is a splendid island of pure gold, deep within the great ocean, adorned with various blossoming mountains and creepers.
देवर्षियक्षप्रवरैरप्सरोभिश्च शोभितम्। सिद्धचारणसङ्घैश्च प्रकीर्णं सुमनोरमम्
It shines with the presence of eminent gods, sages, yakṣas, and apsarases, and is scattered with assemblies of siddhas and cāraṇas, making it exceedingly delightful.
तमुपैति सहस्राक्षः सदा पर्वसु पर्वसु। द्वीपस्तस्यापरे पारे शतयोजनविस्तृतः
Indra, the thousand-eyed, always visits it at every festival; on the far shore of that place lies an island a hundred yojanas wide.
अगम्यो मानुषैर्दीप्तस्तं मार्गध्वं समन्ततः। तत्र सर्वात्मना सीता मार्गितव्या विशेषतः
Inaccessible to humans and blazing with radiance, you must search that place thoroughly; there, above all, Sītā must be sought with utmost effort.
स हि देशस्तु वध्यस्य रावणस्य दुरात्मनः। राक्षसाधिपतेर्वासः सहस्राक्षसमद्युतेः
For that region is the dwelling of the wicked Rāvaṇa, the slayer, the lord of the rākṣasas, whose brilliance rivals Indra's.
