परिकीर्णो ययौ तत्र यत्र रामो व्यवस्थितः। स तं देशमनुप्राप्य श्रेष्ठं रामनिषेवितम्
Thus encircled, he went to where Rama was waiting. Reaching that place, honored by Rama,
अवातरन्महातेजाः शिबिकायाः सलक्ष्मणः। आसाद्य च ततो रामं कृताञ्जलिपुटोऽभवत्
the mighty Sugriva, together with Lakshmana, descended from the palanquin. Approaching Rama, he stood with joined palms.
कृताञ्जलौ स्थिते तस्मिन् वानराश्चाभवंस्तथा। तटाकमिव तं दृष्ट्वा रामः कुड्मलपङ्कजम्
As Sugriva stood with joined palms, so did the monkeys. Seeing him like a lotus bud in a pond, Rama
वानराणां महत् सैन्यं सुग्रीवे प्रीतिमानभूत्। पादयोः पतितं मूर्ध्ना तमुत्थाप्य हरीश्वरम्
became pleased with Sugriva, seeing the great army of monkeys. Lifting the monkey lord, who had bowed at his feet,
प्रेम्णा च बहुमानाच्च राघवः परिषस्वजे। परिष्वज्य च धर्मात्मा निषीदेति ततोऽब्रवीत्
Raghava embraced him with affection and respect. Having embraced him, the righteous one then said, 'Be seated.'
निषण्णं तं ततो दृष्ट्वा क्षितौ रामोऽब्रवीत् ततः। धर्ममर्थं च कामं च काले यस्तु निषेवते
Then, seeing him seated on the ground, Rama spoke: 'He who attends to righteousness, wealth, and desire at the proper time,
विभज्य सततं वीर स राजा हरिसत्तम। हित्वा धर्मं तथार्थं च कामं यस्तु निषेवते
dividing them always, O hero, that king is the best among monkeys. But he who, abandoning righteousness and wealth, pursues only desire,
स वृक्षाग्रे यथा सुप्तः पतितः प्रतिबुध्यते। अमित्राणां वधे युक्तो मित्राणां संग्रहे रतः
is like one who, sleeping atop a tree, wakes after falling. Engaged in the destruction of enemies and devoted to the protection of friends,
त्रिवर्गफलभोक्ता च राजा धर्मेण युज्यते। उद्योगसमयस्त्वेष प्राप्तः शत्रुनिषूदन
the king, enjoying the fruits of the three aims of life, is established in righteousness. Now is the time for effort, O destroyer of foes.
संचिन्त्यतां हि पिङ्गेश हरिभिः सह मन्त्रिभिः। एवमुक्तस्तु सुग्रीवो रामं वचनमब्रवीत्
Let this be considered, O lord of tawny ones, together with the monkeys and your counselors.' Thus addressed, Sugriva spoke to Rama:
प्रणष्टा श्रीश्च कीर्तिश्च कपिराज्यं च शाश्वतम्। त्वत्प्रसादान्महाबाहो पुनः प्राप्तमिदं मया
'My fortune, fame, and the eternal monkey kingdom had been lost; by your grace, O mighty-armed one, I have regained them all.'
तव देव प्रसादाच्च भ्रातुश्च जयतां वर। कृतं न प्रतिकुर्याद् यः पुरुषाणां हि दूषकः
By the grace of the gods and of your victorious brother, one who does not repay what has been done for him is truly a disgrace among men.
एते वानरमुख्याश्च शतशः शत्रुसूदन। प्राप्ताश्चादाय बलिनः पृथिव्यां सर्ववानरान्
O destroyer of enemies, here are these foremost monkeys by the hundreds, who have gathered, bringing with them all the powerful monkeys from across the earth.
ऋक्षाश्च वानराः शूरा गोलाङ्गूलाश्च राघव। कान्तारवनदुर्गाणामभिज्ञा घोरदर्शनाः
Raghava, there are also heroic bears, monkeys, and langurs, fierce in appearance and well-versed in the wild forests and mountain strongholds.
देवगन्धर्वपुत्राश्च वानराः कामरूपिणः। स्वैः स्वैः परिवृताः सैन्यैर्वर्तन्ते पथि राघव
O Raghava, there are monkeys who are sons of gods and gandharvas, able to assume any form at will, each accompanied by their own armies, moving along the path.
शतैः शतसहस्रैश्च वर्तन्ते कोटिभिस्तथा। अयुतैश्चावृता वीर शङ्कुभिश्च परंतप
Hero, there are hundreds, hundreds of thousands, and even millions, surrounded by tens of thousands and by battalions, O scorcher of foes.
अर्बुदैरर्बुदशतैर्मध्यैश्चान्त्यैश्च वानराः। समुद्राश्च परार्धाश्च हरयो हरियूथपाः
There are monkeys and monkey chiefs in numbers of arbudas, hundreds of arbudas, middling and final groups, and even oceans and countless hosts.
आगमिष्यन्ति ते राजन् महेन्द्रसमविक्रमाः। मेघपर्वतसंकाशा मेरुविन्ध्यकृतालयाः
O king, those with the might of Mahendra, resembling clouds and mountains, dwelling on Meru and Vindhya, will come to you.
ते त्वामभिगमिष्यन्ति राक्षसं योद्धुमाहवे। निहत्य रावणं युद्धे ह्यानयिष्यन्ति मैथिलीम्
They will come to you to fight the rakshasa in battle; having slain Ravana in combat, they will surely bring back Maithili.
ततः समुद्योगमवेक्ष्य वीर्यवान् हरिप्रवीरस्य निदेशवर्तिनः। बभूव हर्षाद् वसुधाधिपात्मजः प्रबुद्धनीलोत्पलतुल्यदर्शनः
Then, seeing the preparations under the command of the mighty chief of monkeys, the son of the lord of the earth was filled with joy, his face radiant like a blossoming blue lotus.

Thus, as Sugriva was speaking, Rama, the best among upholders of dharma, embraced him with both arms and replied with joined palms.
यदिन्द्रो वर्षते वर्षं न तच्चित्रं भविष्यति। आदित्योऽसौ सहस्रांशुः कुर्याद् वितिमिरं नभः
It would not be surprising if Indra sends rain, nor if the sun with a thousand rays were to dispel the darkness from the sky.
चन्द्रमा रजनीं कुर्यात् प्रभया सौम्य निर्मलाम्। त्वद्विधो वापि मित्राणां प्रीतिं कुर्यात् परंतप
O gentle one, just as the moon makes the night pure and radiant with its light, so too does a friend like you bring joy to friends, O subduer of enemies.
एवं त्वयि न तच्चित्रं भवेद् यत् सौम्य शोभनम्। जानाम्यहं त्वां सुग्रीव सततं प्रियवादिनम्
Thus, O gentle one, it is not surprising that you act so nobly; I know you, Sugriva, as one who always speaks kindly.
त्वत्सनाथः सखे संख्ये जेतास्मि सकलानरीन्। त्वमेव मे सुहृन्मित्रं साहाय्यं कर्तुमर्हसि
With you as my ally, friend, I shall conquer all my enemies in battle; you alone are my friend and companion, worthy to assist me.
जहारात्मविनाशाय मैथिलीं राक्षसाधमः। वञ्चयित्वा तु पौलोमीमनुह्लादो यथा शचीम्
The vile rakshasa, for his own destruction, abducted Maithili, just as Anuhlada once deceived Shachi, the wife of Pauloma.
नचिरात् तं वधिष्यामि रावणं निशितैः शरैः। पौलोम्याः पितरं दृप्तं शतक्रतुरिवारिहा
Soon I shall slay that Ravana with sharp arrows, just as the destroyer of foes, Indra, killed the proud father of Paulomi.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे चैव रजः समभिवर्तत। उष्णतीव्रां सहस्रांशोश्छादयद् गगने प्रभाम्
Meanwhile, a cloud of dust arose, and the thousand-rayed sun's brilliance was veiled in the sky by its intense heat.
ततो नगेन्द्रसंकाशैस्तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रैर्महाबलैः। कृत्स्ना संछादिता भूमिरसंख्येयैः प्लवंगमैः
Then the entire earth was covered by monkeys, countless in number, resembling mountain peaks, possessing sharp fangs and immense strength.
