इष्ट्यां तु वर्तमानायां कुशनाभं महीपतिम् । उवाच परमोदारः कुशो ब्रह्मसुतस्तदा ॥१-३४-
As the sacrifice was underway, the supremely noble Kuśa, son of Brahmā, spoke to King Kuśanābha.
पुत्रस्ते सदृशः पुत्र भविष्यति सुधार्मिकः । गाधिं प्राप्स्यसि तेन त्वं कीर्तिं लोके च शाश्वतीम् ॥१-३४-
O son, a righteous son, equal to yourself, will be born to you; through him you will obtain Gādhi and everlasting fame in the world.
एवमुक्त्वा कुशो राम कुशनाभं महीपतिम् । जगामाकाशमाविश्य ब्रह्मलोकं सनातनम् ॥१-३४-
Having thus spoken to King Kuśanābha, Kuśa entered the sky and went to the eternal world of Brahmā.
कस्यचित् त्वथ कालस्य कुशनाभस्य धीमतः । जज्ञे परमधर्मिष्ठो गाधिरित्येव नामतः ॥१-३४-
After some time, to the wise Kuśanābha, a supremely righteous son was born, named Gādhi.
स पिता मम काकुत्स्थ गाधिः परमधार्मिकः । कुशवंशप्रसूतोऽस्मि कौशिको रघुनन्दन ॥१-३४-
O descendant of Kakutstha, that Gādhi, supremely righteous, is my father; I, Kauśika, am born in the lineage of Kuśa, O delight of the Raghus.
पूर्वजा भगिनी चापि मम राघव सुव्रता । नाम्ना सत्यवती नाम ऋचीके प्रतिपादिता ॥१-३४-
And my elder sister, O Rāghava, steadfast in virtue, is named Satyavatī, who was given to Ṛcīka.
सशरीरा गता स्वर्गं भर्तारमनुवर्तिनी । कौशिकी परमोदारा सा प्रवृत्ता महानदी ॥१-३४-
That supremely noble Satyavatī, following her husband, ascended to heaven in her body and became the great river Kauśikī.
दिव्या पुण्योदका रम्या हिमवन्तमुपाश्रिता लोकस्य हितकार्यार्थं प्रवृत्ता भगिनी मम ॥१-३४-
Divine, with pure waters, lovely, and resting upon the Himālaya, my sister Kauśikī became a river for the welfare of the world.
ततोऽहं हिमवत्पार्श्वे वसामि नियतः सुखम् भगिन्यां स्नेहसंयुक्तः कौशिक्यां रघुनन्दन ॥१-३४-
Therefore, I dwell happily by the side of the Himālaya, united in affection with my sister Kauśikī, O delight of the Raghus.
सा तु सत्यवती पुण्या सत्ये धर्मे प्रतिष्ठिता पतिव्रता महाभागा कौशिकी सरितां वरा ॥१-३४-
That virtuous Satyavatī, established in truth and righteousness, devoted to her husband, greatly fortunate, became Kauśikī, the best of rivers.
अहं हि नियमाद्राम हित्वा तां समुपागतः सिद्धाश्रममनुप्राप्तः सिद्धोऽस्मि तव तेजसा ॥१-३४-
Indeed, O Rāma, by observance I left her and came here; I reached Siddhāśrama and have been perfected by your energy.
एषा राम ममोत्पत्तिः स्वस्य वंशस्य कीर्तिता देशस्य च महाबाहो यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥१-३४-
O Rāma, this is the account of my birth and my lineage, and of the land, as you have asked me, O mighty-armed one.
गतोऽर्धरात्रः काकुत्स्थ कथाः कथयतो मम । निद्रामभ्येहि भद्रं ते मा भूद् विघ्नोऽध्वनीह नः ॥१-३४-
O descendant of Kakutstha, midnight has passed as I have been telling these stories; seek sleep now, may good fortune be yours, and may nothing hinder our journey.
निष्पन्दास्तरवः सर्वे निलीना मृगपक्षिणः । नैशेन तमसा व्याप्ता दिशश्च रघुनन्दन ॥१-३४-
All the trees are motionless, the wild animals and birds have withdrawn, and the directions, O delight of the Raghus, are covered by the darkness of night.
शनैर्विसृज्यते संध्या नभो नेत्रैरिवावृतम् । नक्षत्रतारागहनं ज्योतिर्भिरवभासते
Twilight is slowly fading, and the sky, as if veiled by eyes, shines with the light of stars and constellations.
उत्तिष्ठते च शीतांशुः शशी लोकतमोनुदः । ह्लादयन् प्राणिनां लोके मनांसि प्रभया स्वया ॥१-३४-
The cool-rayed moon rises, dispelling the darkness of the world, delighting the minds of living beings with its own radiance.
नैशानि सर्वभूतानि प्रचरन्ति ततस्ततः । यक्षराक्षससंघाश्च रौद्राश्च पिशिताशनाः १-३४-
All the night-dwelling beings move about here and there, as do hosts of yakṣas, rākṣasas, and fierce, flesh-eating spirits.
एवमुक्त्वा महातेजा विरराम महामुनिः । साधुसाध्विति तं सर्वे मुनयो ह्यभ्यपूजयन् ॥१-३४-
Having spoken thus, the great sage of immense brilliance became silent; all the sages honored him, exclaiming, 'Excellent, excellent!'
कुशिकानामयं वंशो महान् धर्मपरः सदा । ब्रह्मोपमा महात्मानः कुशवंश्या नरोत्तमाः ॥१-३४-
This lineage of the Kuśikas is great, always devoted to righteousness; the descendants of Kuśa are noble souls, comparable to Brahma, foremost among men.
विशेषेण भवानेव विश्वामित्र महायशः । कौशिकी सरितां श्रेष्ठा कुलोद्योतकरी तव ॥१-३४-
Especially you, illustrious Viśvāmitra, are renowned; Kauśikī, the best among rivers, brings glory to your lineage.
मुदितैर्मुनिशार्दूलैः प्रशस्तः कुशिकात्मजः । निद्रामुपागमच्छ्रीमानस्तंगत इवांशुमान् ॥१-३४-
Praised by the delighted foremost sages, the glorious son of Kuśika entered sleep, like the sun setting.
रामोऽपि सहसौमित्रिः किञ्चिदागतविस्मयः । प्रशस्य मुनिशार्दूलं निद्रां समुपसेवते ॥१-३४-
Rāma, together with Saumitri, somewhat amazed, praised the foremost sage and then also took to sleep.

उपास्य रात्रिशेषं तु शोणाकूले महर्षिभिः । निशायां सुप्रभातायां विश्वामित्रोऽभ्यभाषत ॥१-३५-
Having spent the remainder of the night on the banks of the Śoṇa, together with the great sages, when the night became very bright, Viśvāmitra spoke.
सुप्रभाता निशा राम पूर्वा संध्या प्रवर्तते । उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ भद्रं ते गमनायाभिरोचय ॥१-३५-
The night is bright, Rāma; the early dawn is beginning. Rise, rise, may all be well with you; prepare yourself for the journey.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य कृतपूर्वाह्णिकक्रियः । गमनं रोचयामास वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह ॥१-३५-
Hearing his words, having performed the morning rites, Rāma desired to depart and spoke these words.
अयं शोणः शुभजलोऽगाधः पुलिनमण्डितः । कतरेण पथा ब्रह्मन् संतरिष्यामहे वयम् ॥१-३५-
This Śoṇa river is beautiful, with pure water, deep, and adorned with sandbanks. By which path, O sage, shall we cross?
एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण विश्वामित्रोऽब्रवीदिदम् । एष पन्था मयोद्दिष्टो येन यान्ति महर्षयः ॥१-३५-
Thus addressed by Rāma, Viśvāmitra replied, 'This is the path I have indicated, by which the great sages travel.'
एवमुक्ता महर्षयो विश्वामित्रेण धीमता । पश्यन्तस्ते प्रयाता वै वनानि विविधानि च ॥१-३५-
Thus addressed by the wise Viśvāmitra, the great sages proceeded, observing the various forests.
ते गत्वा दूरमध्वानं गतेऽर्धदिवसे तदा । जाह्नवीं सरितां श्रेष्ठां ददृशुर्मुनिसेविताम् ॥१-३५-
Having traveled a long distance, when half the day had passed, they saw the Jāhnavī, the foremost river, frequented by sages.
