दिव्याभरणचित्राङ्गं दिव्यरूपं यशस्विनम्। दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरं महेन्द्रमिव दुर्जयम्
He beheld him shining with divine ornaments, possessing a celestial form and fame, wearing heavenly garlands and garments, unconquerable like mighty Indra.
दिव्याभरणमाल्याभिः प्रमदाभिः समावृतम्। संरब्धतररक्ताक्षो बभूवान्तकसंनिभः
Surrounded by women adorned with celestial ornaments and garlands, his eyes reddened with excitement, he appeared like Death himself.
रुमां तु वीरः परिरभ्य गाढं वरासनस्थो वरहेमवर्णः। ददर्श सौमित्रिमदीनसत्त्वं विशालनेत्रः स विशालनेत्रम्
The golden-hued hero, seated on the splendid throne, tightly embraced Rumā, and with his wide eyes, gazed upon Saumitri, whose spirit was undiminished and whose eyes were also wide.

Let the thirty-fourth sarga be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Kiṣkindhā Kāṇḍa.
तमप्रतिहतं क्रुद्धं प्रविष्टं पुरुषर्षभम्। सुग्रीवो लक्ष्मणं दृष्ट्वा बभूव व्यथितेन्द्रियः
Seeing Lakṣmaṇa, the foremost of men, enter, unimpeded and enraged, Sugrīva became agitated in his senses.
क्रुद्धं निःश्वसमानं तं प्रदीप्तमिव तेजसा। भ्रातुर्व्यसनसंतप्तं दृष्ट्वा दशरथात्मजम्
Seeing the son of Dasharatha, angered, breathing heavily, blazing with radiance, and tormented by his brother’s distress,
उत्पपात हरिश्रेष्ठो हित्वा सौवर्णमासनम्। महान् महेन्द्रस्य यथा स्वलंकृत इव ध्वजः
The foremost among monkeys sprang up, abandoning his golden seat, like a great, splendidly adorned banner of Indra.
उत्पतन्तमनूत्पेतू रुमाप्रभृतयः स्त्रियः। सुग्रीवं गगने पूर्णं चन्द्रं तारागणा इव
As he leapt up, Rumā and the other women also rose, like stars surrounding the full moon in the sky, with Sugriva.
संरक्तनयनः श्रीमान् संचचार कृताञ्जलिः। बभूवावस्थितस्तत्र कल्पवृक्षो महानिव
With bloodshot eyes, radiant, hands joined in reverence, he moved about and stood there, like a great wish-fulfilling tree.
रुमाद्वितीयं सुग्रीवं नारीमध्यगतं स्थितम्। अब्रवील्लक्ष्मणः क्रुद्धः सतारं शशिनं यथा
Lakshmana, angered, spoke to Sugriva, who was with Rumā, surrounded by women, as the moon is with stars.
सत्त्वाभिजनसम्पन्नः सानुक्रोशो जितेन्द्रियः। कृतज्ञः सत्यवादी च राजा लोके महीयते
A king endowed with strength, noble lineage, compassion, self-control, gratitude, and truthfulness is honored in the world.
यस्तु राजा स्थितोऽधर्मे मित्राणामुपकारिणाम्। मिथ्या प्रतिज्ञां कुरुते को नृशंसतरस्ततः
But if a king, established in unrighteousness, makes false promises to his benefactors, who could be more cruel than he?
शतमश्वानृते हन्ति सहस्रं तु गवानृते। आत्मानं स्वजनं हन्ति पुरुषः पुरुषानृते
For breaking a promise about horses, one kills a hundred; for cows, a thousand; but for breaking a promise to a person, he destroys himself and his kin.
पूर्वं कृतार्थो मित्राणां न तत्प्रतिकरोति यः। कृतघ्नः सर्वभूतानां स वध्यः प्लवगेश्वर
He who, having first received help from friends, does not reciprocate, is ungrateful to all beings and deserves death, O lord of monkeys.
गीतोऽयं ब्रह्मणा श्लोकः सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः। दृष्ट्वा कृतघ्नं क्रुद्धेन तन्निबोध प्लवंगम
This verse, sung by Brahma and revered by all worlds, was uttered in anger upon seeing ingratitude; listen to it, O monkey.
गोघ्ने चैव सुरापे च चौरे भग्नव्रते तथा। निष्कृतिर्विहिता सद्भिः कृतघ्ने नास्ति निष्कृतिः
For killing a cow, drinking liquor, theft, or breaking a vow, atonement is prescribed by the virtuous; but for ingratitude, there is no atonement.
अनार्यस्त्वं कृतघ्नश्च मिथ्यावादी च वानर। पूर्वं कृतार्थो रामस्य न तत्प्रतिकरोषि यत्
You are ignoble, ungrateful, and a liar, O monkey, for you do not reciprocate the help previously given by Rama.
ननु नाम कृतार्थेन त्वया रामस्य वानर। सीताया मार्गणे यत्नः कर्तव्यः कृतमिच्छता
Indeed, having received help from Rama, you ought to make every effort to search for Sita, if you desire to repay him.
स त्वं ग्राम्येषु भोगेषु सक्तो मिथ्याप्रतिश्रवः। न त्वां रामो विजानीते सर्पं मण्डूकराविणम्
You are attached to worldly pleasures, false in your promises; Rama does not recognize you as a snake disguised as a frog.
महाभागेन रामेण पापः करुणवेदिना। हरीणां प्रापितो राज्यं त्वं दुरात्मा महात्मना
By the great-hearted, compassionate Rama, you, wicked one, have been made king of the monkeys.
कृतं चेन्नातिजानीषे राघवस्य महात्मनः। सद्यस्त्वं निशितैर्बाणैर्हतो द्रक्ष्यसि वालिनम्
If you do not understand what has been done by the great-souled Raghava, you will soon see Vali slain by sharp arrows.
न स संकुचितः पन्था येन वाली हतो गतः। समये तिष्ठ सुग्रीव मा वालिपथमन्वगाः
The path by which Vali was slain is not closed; keep your promise, Sugriva, do not follow the way of Vali.
न नूनमिक्ष्वाकुवरस्य कार्मुका- च्छरांश्च तान् पश्यसि वज्रसंनिभान्। ततः सुखं नाम विषेवसे सुखी न रामकार्यं मनसाप्यवेक्षसे
Surely you do not see the bow and those arrows of the descendant of Ikshvaku, resembling thunderbolts; thus you enjoy pleasures at ease and do not even consider Rama’s purpose in your mind.

The thirty-fifth chapter is to be heard in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Kiṣkindhā section.
तथा ब्रूवाणं सौमित्रिं प्रदीप्तमिव तेजसा। अब्रवील्लक्ष्मणं तारा ताराधिपनिभानना
As Saumitri spoke thus, shining like fire in his radiance, Tara, whose face resembled the moon, addressed Lakṣmaṇa.
नैवं लक्ष्मण वक्तव्यो नायं परुषमर्हति। हरीणामीश्वरः श्रोतुं तव वक्त्राद् विशेषतः
Lakṣmaṇa, you should not speak in this manner; he does not deserve such harsh words, especially from you, to be heard by the lord of the monkeys.
नैवाकृतज्ञः सुग्रीवो न शठो नापि दारुणः। नैवानृतकथो वीर न जिह्मश्च कपीश्वरः
Sugrīva is not ungrateful, nor deceitful, nor cruel; the lord of the monkeys does not speak falsehood, nor is he crooked, O hero.
उपकारं कृतं वीरो नाप्ययं विस्मृतः कपिः। रामेण वीर सुग्रीवो यदन्यैर्दुष्करं रणे
The valiant Sugrīva has not forgotten the favor done to him; what Rāma accomplished in battle, which others could not, is remembered by the monkey.
रामप्रसादात् कीर्तिं च कपिराज्यं च शाश्वतम्। प्राप्तवानिह सुग्रीवो रुमां मां च परंतप
By Rāma's grace, Sugrīva has attained lasting fame, the kingdom of the monkeys, Rumā, myself, and you, O scorcher of foes.
सुदुःखशयितः पूर्वं प्राप्येदं सुखमुत्तमम्। प्राप्तकालं न जानीते विश्वामित्रो यथा मुनिः
Having endured great suffering before, he now enjoys supreme happiness; like the sage Viśvāmitra, he does not recognize the proper time.
