न खल्वस्ति मम त्रासो लक्ष्मणान्नापि राघवात्। मित्रं स्वस्थानकुपितं जनयत्येव सम्भ्रमम्
Truly, I have no fear of Lakshmana nor of Raghava; yet when a friend, angered without cause, arises, it always creates anxiety.
सर्वथा सुकरं मित्रं दुष्करं प्रतिपालनम्। अनित्यत्वात् तु चित्तानां प्रीतिरल्पेऽपि भिद्यते
Indeed, it is easy to make a friend, but hard to maintain one; because of the fickleness of minds, affection is broken even by the smallest thing.
अतो निमित्तं त्रस्तोऽहं रामेण तु महात्मना। यन्ममोपकृतं शक्यं प्रतिकर्तुं न तन्मया
Therefore, I am anxious because of Rama, the great-souled; whatever benefit he has done for me, I am unable to repay.
सुग्रीवेणैवमुक्ते तु हनूमान् हरिपुंगवः। उवाच स्वेन तर्केण मध्ये वानरमन्त्रिणाम्
When Sugriva had spoken thus, Hanuman, foremost among monkeys, spoke his own reasoning in the midst of the monkey counselors.
सर्वथा नैतदाश्चर्यं यत् त्वं हरिगणेश्वर। न विस्मरसि सुस्निग्धमुपकारं कृतं शुभम्
Indeed, it is not surprising, O lord of the monkey hosts, that you do not forget the kindly and noble help that was done for you.
राघवेण तु वीरेण भयमुत्सृज्य दूरतः। त्वत्प्रियार्थं हतो वाली शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमः
By the valiant Raghava, casting aside fear, for your sake, Vali—equal to Indra in prowess—was slain.
सर्वथा प्रणयात् क्रुद्धो राघवो नात्र संशयः। भ्रातरं सम्प्रहितवाँल्लक्ष्मणं लक्ष्मिवर्धनम्
Certainly, out of affection, Raghava is angry—there is no doubt; he has sent his brother Lakshmana, the increaser of fortune.
त्वं प्रमत्तो न जानीषे कालं कालविदां वर। फुल्लसप्तच्छदश्यामा प्रवृत्ता तु शरच्छुभा
You, careless, do not perceive the time, O best among those who know time; the autumn season has begun, with dark saptacchada trees in bloom.
निर्मलग्रहनक्षत्रा द्यौः प्रणष्टबलाहका। प्रसन्नाश्च दिशः सर्वाः सरितश्च सरांसि च
The sky is clear, with pure planets and stars, the clouds have vanished; all directions are bright, and rivers and lakes as well.
प्राप्तमुद्योगकालं तु नावैषि हरिपुंगव। त्वं प्रमत्त इति व्यक्तं लक्ष्मणोऽयमिहागतः
The time for action has arrived, O foremost monkey; you do not realize it, and it is clear that Lakshmana has come here because you are negligent.
आर्तस्य हृतदारस्य परुषं पुरुषान्तरात्। वचनं मर्षणीयं ते राघवस्य महात्मनः
The harsh words of another, spoken by the great-souled Raghava, whose wife has been abducted and who is distressed, must be endured by you.
कृतापराधस्य हि ते नान्यत् पश्याम्यहं क्षमम्। अन्तरेणाञ्जलिं बद्ध्वा लक्ष्मणस्य प्रसादनात्
For one who has committed an offense, I see nothing else suitable except, with folded hands, seeking Lakshmana's forgiveness.
नियुक्तैर्मन्त्रिभिर्वाच्यो ह्यवश्यं पार्थिवो हितम्। इत एव भयं त्यक्त्वा ब्रवीम्यवधृतं वचः
A king must certainly be advised by appointed counselors for his welfare; thus, casting aside fear, I speak these words, though unasked.
अभिक्रुद्धः समर्थो हि चापमुद्यम्य राघवः। सदेवासुरगन्धर्वं वशे स्थापयितुं जगत्
For when Rāghava, capable and enraged, raises his bow, he can bring the whole world, including gods, demons, and gandharvas, under his control.
न स क्षमः कोपयितुं यः प्रसाद्यः पुनर्भवेत्। पूर्वोपकारं स्मरता कृतज्ञेन विशेषतः
He who, once appeased, can again be angered, is not fit to be provoked—especially by one who remembers past favors and is grateful.
तस्य मूर्ध्ना प्रणम्य त्वं सपुत्रः ससुहृज्जनः। राजंस्तिष्ठ स्वसमये भर्तुर्भार्येव तद्वशे
Therefore, bow your head to him, together with your son and friends; remain as a king within your proper bounds, as a wife is subject to her husband.
न रामरामानुजशासनं त्वया कपीन्द्र युक्तं मनसाप्यपोहितुम्। मनो हि ते ज्ञास्यति मानुषं बलं सराघवस्यास्य सुरेन्द्रवर्चसः
O king of monkeys, it is not right for you, even in thought, to disregard the command of Rāma or his brother; your mind will soon recognize the human strength of this Rāghava, whose radiance rivals Indra.

Hear now the thirty-third chapter in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Kiṣkindhā section.
अथ प्रतिसमादिष्टो लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा। प्रविवेश गुहां रम्यां किष्किन्धां रामशासनात्
Then Lakṣmaṇa, destroyer of enemy heroes, having been instructed, entered the beautiful cave of Kiṣkindhā at Rāma's command.
द्वारस्था हरयस्तत्र महाकाया महाबलाः। बभूवुर्लक्ष्मणं दृष्ट्वा सर्वे प्राञ्जलयः स्थिताः
There at the entrance stood monkeys of great size and strength; seeing Lakṣmaṇa, all stood with joined palms.
निःश्वसन्तं तु तं दृष्ट्वा क्रुद्धं दशरथात्मजम्। बभूवुर्हरयस्त्रस्ता न चैनं पर्यवारयन्
Seeing the son of Daśaratha breathing heavily and angry, the monkeys became fearful and did not surround him.
स तां रत्नमयीं दिव्यां श्रीमान् पुष्पितकाननाम्। रम्यां रत्नसमाकीर्णां ददर्श महतीं गुहाम्
He saw that great cave, adorned with gems, divine, with blossoming gardens, beautiful and filled with precious stones.
हर्म्यप्रासादसम्बाधां नानारत्नोपशोभिताम्। सर्वकामफलैर्वृक्षैः पुष्पितैरुपशोभिताम्
Crowded with mansions and palaces, embellished with various jewels, and beautified by blossoming trees that grant every desire.
देवगन्धर्वपुत्रैश्च वानरैः कामरूपिभिः। दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरैः शोभितां प्रियदर्शनैः
It was adorned by monkeys, sons of gods and gandharvas, who could assume any form at will, wearing divine garlands and garments, pleasing to behold.
चन्दनागुरुपद्मानां गन्धैः सुरभिगन्धिताम्। मैरेयाणां मधूनां च सम्मोदितमहापथाम्
Fragrant with the scents of sandalwood, aloe, and lotus, and its grand avenues were perfumed by mead and honey.
विन्ध्यमेरुगिरिप्रख्यैः प्रासादैर्नैकभूमिभिः। ददर्श गिरिनद्यश्च विमलास्तत्र राघवः
Rāghava saw multi-storied palaces, resembling the Vindhya and Meru mountains, and pure rivers and springs within.
अङ्गदस्य गृहं रम्यं मैन्दस्य द्विविदस्य च। गवयस्य गवाक्षस्य गजस्य शरभस्य च
He saw the splendid homes of Aṅgada, Mainda, Dvivida, Gavaya, Gavākṣa, Gaja, and Śarabha.
विद्युन्मालेश्च सम्पातेः सूर्याक्षस्य हनूमतः। वीरबाहोः सुबाहोश्च नलस्य च महात्मनः
And the homes of Vidyunmāli, Sampāti, Sūryākṣa, Hanumān, Vīrabāhu, Subāhu, and the noble Nala.
कुमुदस्य सुषेणस्य तारजाम्बवतोस्तथा। दधिवक्त्रस्य नीलस्य सुपाटलसुनेत्रयोः
Also those of Kumuda, Suṣeṇa, Tāra, Jāmbavat, Dadhivaktra, Nīla, Supāṭala, and Sunetra.
एतेषां कपिमुख्यानां राजमार्गे महात्मनाम्। ददर्श गृहमुख्यानि महासाराणि लक्ष्मणः
Lakṣmaṇa saw the chief homes of these great monkey leaders along the royal road, all grand and splendid.
