That monkey, wrapped in sleep and exhaustion, did not awaken; he was intoxicated with wine and deluded by passion.
Then, seeing Lakṣmaṇa, the monkeys made a clamor, trying to appease him, their minds bewildered by fear.
Seeing Lakṣmaṇa, whose roar was like a great flood and whose voice resembled thunder and lightning, they raised a lion’s roar together near him.
Awakened by that great sound, the monkey, his eyes reddened by intoxication, confused and adorned with garlands and ornaments, became alert.
Then, having heard Aṅgada’s words and with his arrival, the two counselors of the monkey king, esteemed and noble in appearance, came together.
Plakṣa and Prabhāva, the two counselors skilled in meaning and righteousness, informed Lakṣmaṇa, who had come to speak on various matters.
Having appeased Sugrīva with well-considered words, they sat near him as attendants, just as the Maruts attend Indra, the lord of the winds.
The two brothers, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, are devoted to truth and greatly illustrious; though they have taken human form, they are worthy of kingship and bestowers of sovereignty.
Of the two, one stands at the door holding a bow—Lakṣmaṇa—at whom the monkeys, trembling with fear, do not dare to make a sound.
This is Lakṣmaṇa, Rāghava’s brother, skilled in speech and resolute in action, who has come here at Rāma’s command.
And this is your son, O King, Aṅgada, beloved of Tārā, who has been sent to you by Lakṣmaṇa in great haste, O faultless one.
He, whose eyes are inflamed with anger, stands at the door, valiant, as if burning the monkeys with his gaze, O monkey king.
You, O great king, along with your son and relatives, go quickly and bow your head to him, so that his anger may subside today.
Just as Rāma is righteous, so act with resolve, O King; remain true to your promise and keep to your duty.
Listen to the thirty-second sarga in the glorious Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, Kiṣkindhā Kāṇḍa.
Hearing Angada's words, Sugriva, together with his counselors, upon hearing that Lakshmana was angry, rose from his seat, composed.
Having weighed the gravity and lightness of the situation, he addressed them, skilled in counsel, expert in deliberation, and accomplished in the art of advice.
I have not spoken wrongly, nor have I acted improperly; yet Lakshmana, the brother of Raghava, is angry—why, I wonder.
My enemies, who are ever watchful and hostile, have surely made Lakshmana, Raghava's younger brother, hear of faults not arising from me.
Here, then, according to each one's understanding and as prescribed, the determination of the situation must be carefully and thoroughly discerned.
Truly, I have no fear of Lakshmana nor of Raghava; yet when a friend, angered without cause, arises, it always creates anxiety.
Indeed, it is easy to make a friend, but hard to maintain one; because of the fickleness of minds, affection is broken even by the smallest thing.
Therefore, I am anxious because of Rama, the great-souled; whatever benefit he has done for me, I am unable to repay.
When Sugriva had spoken thus, Hanuman, foremost among monkeys, spoke his own reasoning in the midst of the monkey counselors.
Indeed, it is not surprising, O lord of the monkey hosts, that you do not forget the kindly and noble help that was done for you.
By the valiant Raghava, casting aside fear, for your sake, Vali—equal to Indra in prowess—was slain.
Certainly, out of affection, Raghava is angry—there is no doubt; he has sent his brother Lakshmana, the increaser of fortune.
You, careless, do not perceive the time, O best among those who know time; the autumn season has begun, with dark saptacchada trees in bloom.
The sky is clear, with pure planets and stars, the clouds have vanished; all directions are bright, and rivers and lakes as well.
The time for action has arrived, O foremost monkey; you do not realize it, and it is clear that Lakshmana has come here because you are negligent.
