हंससारसचक्राह्वैः कुररैश्च समन्ततः। पुलिनान्यवकीर्णानि नदीनां पश्य लक्ष्मण
Look, Lakṣmaṇa, the riverbanks are scattered everywhere with swans, cranes, chakravāka birds, and curlews.
चत्वारो वार्षिका मासा गता वर्षशतोपमाः। मम शोकाभितप्तस्य तथा सीतामपश्यतः
Four months of the rainy season, which seemed like a hundred years, have passed for me, tormented by grief and deprived of seeing Sītā.
चक्रवाकीव भर्तारं पृष्ठतोऽनुगता वनम्। विषमं दण्डकारण्यमुद्यानमिव चाङ्गना
Like a female chakravāka following her mate into the forest, Sītā entered the harsh Daṇḍaka woods, as a woman enters a garden with her beloved.
प्रियाविहीने दुःखार्ते हृतराज्ये विवासिते। कृपां न कुरुते राजा सुग्रीवो मयि लक्ष्मण
The king Sugriva does not show me compassion, Lakshmana, though I am bereft of my beloved, afflicted by sorrow, deprived of my kingdom, and exiled.
अनाथो हृतराज्योऽहं रावणेन च धर्षितः। दीनो दूरगृहः कामी मां चैव शरणं गतः
I am without support, my kingdom taken, violated by Ravana, miserable, far from home, longing, and I have sought refuge in him.
इत्येतैः कारणैः सौम्य सुग्रीवस्य दुरात्मनः। अहं वानरराजस्य परिभूतः परंतपः
For these reasons, gentle one, I have been disregarded by the wicked-hearted Sugriva, king of the monkeys, though I am a scorcher of foes.
स कालं परिसंख्याय सीतायाः परिमार्गणे। कृतार्थः समयं कृत्वा दुर्मतिर्नाववुध्यते
Having achieved his purpose and made a promise regarding the search for Sita, that evil-minded one does not heed the appointed time.
स किष्किन्धां प्रविश्य त्वं ब्रूहि वानरपुङ्गवम्। मूर्खं ग्राम्यसुखे सक्तं सुग्रीवं वचनान्मम
Go to Kishkindha and tell the foremost of monkeys, Sugriva—who is foolish and attached to vulgar pleasures—these words of mine.
अर्थिनामुपपन्नानां पूर्वं चाप्युपकारिणाम्। आशां संश्रुत्य यो हन्ति स लोके पुरुषाधमः
He who, having promised hope to those who seek and to former benefactors, breaks his word, is the lowest of men in the world.
शुभं वा यदि वा पापं यो हि वाक्यमुदीरितम्। सत्येन परिगृह्णाति स वीरः पुरुषोत्तमः
Whether the word spoken is good or evil, he who upholds it with truth is a hero, the best among men.
कृतार्था ह्यकृतार्थानां मित्राणां न भवन्ति ये। तान् मृतानपि क्रव्यादाः कृतघ्नान् नोपभुञ्जते
Those who, having gained their purpose, do not remain friends to those who have not, are so ungrateful that even flesh-eating beasts do not consume them when dead.
नूनं काञ्चनपृष्ठस्य विकृष्टस्य मया रणे। द्रष्टुमिच्छसि चापस्य रूपं विद्युद्गणोपमम्
Surely you wish to see in battle the form of my golden-backed, drawn bow, shining like a cluster of lightning.
घोरं ज्यातलनिर्घोषं क्रुद्धस्य मम संयुगे। निर्घोषमिव वज्रस्य पुनः संश्रोतुमिच्छसि
You wish again to hear in combat the dreadful twang of my bowstring, like the thunder of a vajra, when I am enraged.
काममेवंगतेऽप्यस्य परिज्ञाते पराक्रमे। त्वत्सहायस्य मे वीर न चिन्ता स्यान्नृपात्मज
Even so, O hero, if his strength is known and he is your ally, I would have no concern, prince, even in this situation.
यदर्थमयमारम्भः कृतः परपुरंजय। समयं नाभिजानाति कृतार्थः प्लवगेश्वरः
For the sake of which this undertaking was begun, O conqueror of enemy cities, the lord of monkeys, having achieved his aim, does not remember the agreement.
वर्षाः समयकालं तु प्रतिज्ञाय हरीश्वरः। व्यतीतांश्चतुरो मासान् विहरन् नावबुध्यते
Having promised the proper time to the lord of monkeys, four months of the rainy season have passed, yet he, enjoying himself, does not notice.
सामात्यपरिषत्क्रीडन् पानमेवोपसेवते। शोकदीनेषु नास्मासु सुग्रीवः कुरुते दयाम्
Playing with his ministers and court, he indulges only in drinking; Sugriva shows no compassion to us, who are afflicted by grief.
उच्यतां गच्छ सुग्रीवस्त्वया वीर महाबल। मम रोषस्य यद्रूपं ब्रूयाश्चैनमिदं वचः
Go, O mighty hero, and tell Sugriva this: describe to him the nature of my anger, and speak these words to him.
न स संकुचितः पन्था येन वाली हतो गतः। समये तिष्ठ सुग्रीव मा वालिपथमन्वगाः
The path by which Vali was slain is not closed; keep your promise, Sugriva, do not follow the path of Vali.
एक एव रणे वाली शरेण निहतो मया। त्वां तु सत्यादतिक्रान्तं हनिष्यामि सबान्धवम्
Vali alone was slain by me in battle with an arrow; but you, if you break your word, I will slay, along with your kin.
यदेवं विहिते कार्ये यद्धितं पुरुषर्षभ। तत् तद् ब्रूहि नरश्रेष्ठ त्वर कालव्यतिक्रमः
Now that the matter stands thus, O best of men, speak whatever is proper and beneficial; hasten, for time is slipping away.
कुरुष्व सत्यं मम वानरेश्वर प्रतिश्रुतं धर्ममवेक्ष्य शाश्वतम्। मा वालिनं प्रेतगतो यमक्षये त्वमद्य पश्येर्मम चोदितः शरैः
O lord of the monkeys, fulfill your promise to me, keeping in mind the eternal law of righteousness. Do not let me see Vāli, who has gone to the realm of the dead, today, struck down by my arrows at your urging.
स पूर्वजं तीव्रविवृद्धकोपं लालप्यमानं प्रसमीक्ष्य दीनम्। चकार तीव्रां मतिमुग्रतेजा हरीश्वरे मानववंशवर्धनः
Seeing his elder brother, overcome with intense and growing anger, lamenting and looking dejected, the illustrious scion of Manu’s line, mighty in energy, made a firm resolve regarding the lord of the monkeys.

स कामिनं दीनमदीनसत्त्वं शोकाभिपन्नं समुदीर्णकोपम्। नरेन्द्रसूनुर्नरदेवपुत्रं रामानुजः पूर्वजमित्युवाच
The son of the king, the younger brother of Rāma, seeing his elder brother, who was lovesick, dejected yet steadfast in spirit, overwhelmed by grief and rising anger, spoke to him as follows.
न वानरः स्थास्यति साधुवृत्ते न मन्यते कर्मफलानुषङ्गान्। न भोक्ष्यते वानरराज्यलक्ष्मीं तथा हि नातिक्रमतेऽस्य बुद्धिः
This monkey will not remain virtuous, nor does he consider the consequences of his actions. He will not enjoy the prosperity of the monkey kingdom, for such is not the inclination of his mind.
मतिक्षयाद् ग्राम्यसुखेषु सक्त- स्तव प्रसादात् प्रतिकारबुद्धिः। हतोऽग्रजं पश्यतु वीरवालिनं न राज्यमेवं विगुणस्य देयम्
Because of his lack of judgment, he is attached to base pleasures; but by your favor, he has gained the resolve to retaliate. Let him see his heroic elder brother, Vāli, slain. A kingdom should not be given to one so lacking in virtue.
न धारये कोपमुदीर्णवेगं निहन्मि सुग्रीवमसत्यमद्य। हरिप्रवीरैः सह वालिपुत्रो नरेन्द्रपुत्र्या विचयं करोतु
I will not harbor this surging anger; today I will slay Sugrīva for his falsehood. Let Vāli’s son, together with the foremost monkeys, decide with the king’s daughter what is to be done.
तमात्तबाणासनमुत्पतन्तं निवेदितार्थं रणचण्डकोपम्। उवाच रामः परवीरहन्ता स्ववीक्षितं सानुनयं च वाक्यम्
As he leapt up, bow and arrows in hand, fierce in battle and intent on his purpose, Rāma, destroyer of enemy heroes, addressed him with words both considered and conciliatory.
नहि वै त्वद्विधो लोके पापमेवं समाचरेत्। कोपमार्येण यो हन्ति स वीरः पुरुषोत्तमः
Indeed, one such as you should not commit such a wrongful act in this world. The hero who, in anger, kills with restraint is the highest among men.
