तासां तु वचनं श्रुत्वा राजा परमधार्मिकः । प्रत्युवाच महातेजाः कन्याशतमनुत्तमम् ॥१-३३-
Hearing their words, the king, supremely righteous and of great splendor, replied to the hundred excellent maidens.
क्षान्तं क्षमावतां पुत्र्यः कर्तव्यं सुमहत् कृतम् । ऐकमत्यमुपागम्य कुलं चावेक्षितं मम ॥१-३३-
"Patience is the greatest duty of those who are forbearing, my daughters. You have acted in unity and preserved our lineage."
अलङ्कारो हि नारीणां क्षमा तु पुरुषस्य वा । दुष्करं तच्च वै क्षान्तं त्रिदशेषु विशेषतः ॥१-३३-
"Adornment is for women, but patience is for men; yet such forbearance is difficult even for the gods, especially."
यादृशी वः क्षमा पुत्र्यः सर्वासामविशेषतः । क्षमा दानं क्षमा सत्यं क्षमा यज्ञाश्च पुत्रिकाः ॥१-३३-
"Such patience as you all have shown, my daughters, without exception—patience is charity, patience is truth, patience is sacrifice, O daughters."
क्षमा यशः क्षमा धर्मः क्षमायां विष्ठितं जगत् । विसृज्य कन्याः काकुत्स्थ राजा त्रिदशविक्रमः ॥१-३३-
"Patience is fame, patience is righteousness, the world rests upon patience. Having thus addressed his daughters, O descendant of Kakutstha, the king, mighty as the gods, let them go."
मन्त्रज्ञो मन्त्रयामास प्रदानं सह मन्त्रिभिः । देशे काले च कर्तव्यं सदृशे प्रतिपादनम् ॥१-३३-
He, skilled in counsel, deliberated together with his ministers about the giving, considering the proper place, time, and suitable recipient.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु चूली नाम महाद्युतिः ऊर्ध्वरेताः शुभाचारो ब्राह्मं तप उपागमत् ॥१-३३-
At that very time, a radiant sage named Cūlī, steadfast in celibacy and virtuous conduct, undertook Brahmanical austerity.
तपस्यन्तमृषिं तत्र गन्धर्वी पर्युपासते । सोमदा नाम भद्रं ते ऊर्मिलातनया तदा ॥१-३३-
As that sage practiced penance there, a Gandharva maiden named Somadā, daughter of Ūrmilā, attended upon him.
सा च तं प्रणता भूत्वा शुश्रूषणपरायणा । उवास काले धर्मिष्ठा तस्यास्तुष्टोऽभवद् गुरुः ॥१-३३-
She, having bowed to him, devoted herself to service; dwelling there righteously for a time, her teacher became pleased with her.
स च तां कालयोगेन प्रोवाच रघुनन्दन । परितुष्टोऽस्मि भद्रं ते किं करोमि तव प्रियम् ॥१-३३-
Then, in due course, O descendant of Raghu, he spoke to her: 'I am pleased with you, may good be yours; what shall I do to please you?'
परितुष्टं मुनिं ज्ञात्वा गन्धर्वी मधुरस्वरम् । उवाच परमप्रीता वाक्यज्ञा वाक्यकोविदम् ॥१-३३-
Recognizing the sage's satisfaction, the Gandharva maiden, delighted and skilled in speech, addressed him in a sweet voice.
लक्ष्म्या समुदितो ब्राह्म्या ब्रह्मभूतो महातपाः । ब्राह्मेण तपसा युक्तं पुत्रमिच्छामि धार्मिकम् ॥१-३३-
Blessed with Brahmanical splendor and austerity, O great ascetic, I desire a righteous son endowed with Brahmanical penance.
अपतिश्चास्मि भद्रं ते भार्या चास्मि न कस्यचित् । ब्राह्मेणोपगतायाश्च दातुमर्हसि मे सुतम् ॥१-३३-
I am without a husband, may good be yours, and I am not anyone's wife; having approached you through Brahmanical means, you are worthy to grant me a son.
तस्याः प्रसन्नो ब्रह्मर्षिर्ददौ ब्राह्ममनुत्तमम् । ब्रह्मदत्त इति ख्यातं मानसं चूलिनः सुतम् ॥१-३३-
Pleased with her, the Brahmarṣi granted her an excellent Brahmanical son, born of his mind, known as Brahmadatta, son of Cūlī.
स राजा ब्रह्मदत्तस्तु पुरीमध्यवसत् तदा । काम्पिल्यां परया लक्ष्म्या देवराजो यथा दिवम् ॥१-३३-
That king Brahmadatta then resided in the city of Kāmpilya, with supreme splendor, like the lord of gods in heaven.
स बुद्धिं कृतवान् राजा कुशनाभः सुधार्मिकः । ब्रह्मदत्ताय काकुत्स्थ दातुं कन्याशतं तदा ॥१-३३-
Then, O descendant of Kakutstha, the righteous king Kuśanābha resolved to give his hundred daughters to Brahmadatta.
तमाहूय महातेजा ब्रह्मदत्तं महीपतिः । ददौ कन्याशतं राजा सुप्रीतेनान्तरात्मना ॥१-३३-
Summoning the illustrious Brahmadatta, the king, delighted in his heart, gave him his hundred daughters.
यथाक्रमं तदा पाणिं जग्राह रघुनन्दन । ब्रह्मदत्तो महीपालस्तासां देवपतिर्यथा ॥१-३३-
Then, in due order, King Brahmadatta took their hands in marriage, like the lord of gods with his consorts.
स्पृष्टमात्रे तदा पाणौ विकुब्जा विगतज्वराः । युक्तं परमया लक्ष्म्या बभौ कन्याशतं तदा ॥१-३३-
At the very touch of his hand, they were freed from their deformity and affliction, and that hundred maidens shone with supreme beauty.
स दृष्ट्वा वायुना मुक्ताः कुशनाभो महीपतिः । बभूव परमप्रीतो हर्षं लेभे पुनः पुनः ॥१-३३-
Seeing his daughters released by the wind, King Kuśanābha was exceedingly delighted and rejoiced again and again.
कृतोद्वाहं तु राजानं ब्रह्मदत्तं महीपतिम् । सदारं प्रेषयामास सोपाध्यायगणं तदा ॥१-३३-
Having married his daughters, the king sent Brahmadatta, together with his wives and accompanied by teachers, on his way.
सोमदापि सुतं दृष्ट्वा पुत्रस्य सदृशीं क्रियाम् । यथान्यायं च गन्धर्वी स्नुषास्ताः प्रत्यनन्दत । स्पृष्ट्वा स्पृष्ट्वा च ताः कन्याः कुशनाभं प्रशस्य च ॥१-३३-
Somadā, seeing her son perform deeds befitting him, and the Gandharva maiden, in accordance with custom, joyfully welcomed her daughters-in-law; touching them and praising Kuśanābha.

कृतोद्वाहे गते तस्मिन् ब्रह्मदत्ते च राघव । अपुत्रः पुत्रलाभाय पौत्रीमिष्टिमकल्पयत् ॥१-३४-
When Brahmadatta had been married and departed, O Rāghava, the childless king performed a sacrifice for the sake of obtaining a son, seeking a grandson.
इष्ट्यां तु वर्तमानायां कुशनाभं महीपतिम् । उवाच परमोदारः कुशो ब्रह्मसुतस्तदा ॥१-३४-
As the sacrifice was underway, the supremely noble Kuśa, son of Brahmā, spoke to King Kuśanābha.
पुत्रस्ते सदृशः पुत्र भविष्यति सुधार्मिकः । गाधिं प्राप्स्यसि तेन त्वं कीर्तिं लोके च शाश्वतीम् ॥१-३४-
O son, a righteous son, equal to yourself, will be born to you; through him you will obtain Gādhi and everlasting fame in the world.
एवमुक्त्वा कुशो राम कुशनाभं महीपतिम् । जगामाकाशमाविश्य ब्रह्मलोकं सनातनम् ॥१-३४-
Having thus spoken to King Kuśanābha, Kuśa entered the sky and went to the eternal world of Brahmā.
कस्यचित् त्वथ कालस्य कुशनाभस्य धीमतः । जज्ञे परमधर्मिष्ठो गाधिरित्येव नामतः ॥१-३४-
After some time, to the wise Kuśanābha, a supremely righteous son was born, named Gādhi.
स पिता मम काकुत्स्थ गाधिः परमधार्मिकः । कुशवंशप्रसूतोऽस्मि कौशिको रघुनन्दन ॥१-३४-
O descendant of Kakutstha, that Gādhi, supremely righteous, is my father; I, Kauśika, am born in the lineage of Kuśa, O delight of the Raghus.
पूर्वजा भगिनी चापि मम राघव सुव्रता । नाम्ना सत्यवती नाम ऋचीके प्रतिपादिता ॥१-३४-
And my elder sister, O Rāghava, steadfast in virtue, is named Satyavatī, who was given to Ṛcīka.
