As the birds settle down and the lotuses close, while the jasmine blooms, it is known that the sun has set.
The campaigns of the kings have ended, the armies remain on the roads, and both hostilities and paths have been made equal by the water.
In the month of Bhadrapada, O Brahman, for the Brahmins who wish to recite, the time for study and the singing of the Sāma hymns has arrived.
Surely, Bharata, lord of Kosala, having completed his duties and gathered his resources, has now reached the month of Āṣāḍha.
Surely, as the Sarayu fills up, its current grows stronger, and its sound, as I imagine, resembles that of Ayodhyā as I return.
Sugriva, endowed with abundant virtues, enjoys comfort, having conquered his enemies, reunited with his wife, and established in a great kingdom.
But I, Lakshmana, have lost my wife and been deprived of my vast kingdom; I am sinking, like a riverbank eroded by water.
My sorrow is vast, the rains are exceedingly difficult to traverse, and Ravana, the great and boundless enemy, appears before me.
Seeing this season unfit for campaigning and the paths extremely hard to cross, and with Sugriva bowed down, I have said nothing.
Moreover, since he has long suffered and is only recently reunited with his wife, and because my own purpose is weighty, I do not wish to speak to the vanara.
For, after resting himself and recognizing the right time, Sugriva will surely remember his obligation; there is no doubt about this.
Therefore, O auspicious one, I am waiting for the proper time, desiring the favor of Sugriva and of the rivers.
For a hero repays a favor with a favor; but one who is ungrateful and does not reciprocate wounds the hearts of the virtuous.
Then, having listened thus, Lakshmana, with joined palms, honored those words, and spoke to Rama, showing his own auspicious presence.
O king, all that you have said is your wish; the lord of the monkeys will soon act. Wait for the autumn, bear with this rainfall, and be steadfast in subduing the enemy.

And seeing Sugriva, prosperous in his aims but slow to pursue righteousness and wealth, his mind wholly set on the path of pleasure,

Sporting like the lord of the gods among hosts of Gandharvas and Apsarases, having entrusted his duties to his ministers, and not attending to their counsel,
With all doubts about his kingdom dispelled, living as he pleases, his purpose certain, knowing the true nature of wealth, and understanding the special law of time,

The gathering of friends remains; that, O lord, you ought to accomplish. For he who knows the proper time among friends always acts rightly.
His kingdom, fame, and power increase, O king, whose treasury, punishment, friends, and self are all in harmony; he alone enjoys great sovereignty.
Therefore, you, endowed with good conduct and established on a safe path, ought to accomplish, as is fitting, the purpose undertaken for the sake of a friend.
