एते हि सचिवा राजंस्तारप्रभृतयस्तव। पुरवासिजनश्चायं परिवार्य विषीदति
'Here are your ministers, beginning with Tara, O king, and these citizens of your city, all gathered around, grieving.'
विसर्जयैनान् सचिवान् यथापुरमरिंदम। ततः क्रीडामहे सर्वा वनेषु मदनोत्कटाः
'Dismiss these ministers, O subduer of enemies, as before; then let us all, filled with longing, sport together in the forests.'
एवं विलपतीं तारां पतिशोकपरीवृताम्। उत्थापयन्ति स्म तदा वानर्यः शोककर्शिताः
As Tara, surrounded by grief for her husband, lamented in this way, the monkey women, themselves worn by sorrow, tried to raise her up.
सुग्रीवेण ततः सार्धं सोऽङ्गदः पितरं रुदन्। चितामारोपयामास शोकेनाभिप्लुतेन्द्रियः
Then Angada, together with Sugriva, weeping for his father, placed him on the funeral pyre, his senses overwhelmed by grief.
ततोऽग्निं विधिवद् दत्त्वा सोऽपसव्यं चकार ह। पितरं दीर्घमध्वानं प्रस्थितं व्याकुलेन्द्रियः
Then, having offered fire according to the rites, he walked counterclockwise around his father, whose senses were agitated, as he set out on the long journey.
संस्कृत्य वालिनं तं तु विधिवत् प्लवगर्षभाः। आजग्मुरुदकं कर्तुं नदीं शुभजलां शिवाम्
Having performed the funeral rites for Vali according to custom, the foremost monkeys went to the auspicious river with pure water to offer libations.
ततस्ते सहितास्तत्र ह्यङ्गदं स्थाप्य चाग्रतः। सुग्रीवतारासहिताः सिषिचुर्वालिने जलम्
There, all together, placing Angada at the front, Sugriva and Tara with them, they poured water for Vali.
सुग्रीवेणैव दीनेन दीनो भूत्वा महाबलः। समानशोकः काकुत्स्थः प्रेतकार्याण्यकारयत्
Then Rama, sharing Sugriva's sorrow, though mighty, became sorrowful himself, and performed the funeral duties for the dead.
ततोऽथ तं वालिनमग्र्यपौरुषं प्रकाशमिक्ष्वाकुवरेषुणा हतम्। प्रदीप्य दीप्ताग्निसमौजसं तदा सलक्ष्मणं राममुपेयिवान् हरिः
Then the monkey, having kindled the funeral fire for Vali, who was of supreme strength and had been slain by the illustrious scion of Ikshvaku, approached Rama, accompanied by Lakshmana.

Then the chief ministers of the monkeys, surrounding Sugriva, who was tormented by grief and whose garments were soaked, approached him.
अभिगम्य महाबाहुं राममक्लिष्टकारिणम्। स्थिताः प्राञ्जलयः सर्वे पितामहमिवर्षयः
Having approached mighty-armed Rāma, the doer of flawless deeds, they all stood with joined palms, as the sages do before Brahmā.
ततः काञ्चनशैलाभस्तरुणार्कनिभाननः। अब्रवीत् प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः
Then Hanumān, son of the Wind, whose face shone like a young sun and whose form was like a golden mountain, spoke these words with joined palms.
भवत्प्रसादात् काकुत्स्थ पितृपैतामहं महत्। वानराणां सुदंष्ट्राणां सम्पन्नबलशालिनाम्
By your grace, O descendant of Kakutstha, I have attained the great ancestral kingdom of the Vānaras, fierce-toothed and endowed with accomplished strength.
महात्मनां सुदुष्प्रापं प्राप्तं राज्यमिदं प्रभो। भवता समनुज्ञातः प्रविश्य नगरं शुभम्
This kingdom, difficult to obtain even for the great-souled, has been gained, O lord, with your permission; now, having entered the auspicious city—
संविधास्यति कार्याणि सर्वाणि ससुहृद्गणः। स्नातोऽयं विविधैर्गन्धैरौषधैश्च यथाविधि
He, together with his circle of friends, will arrange all affairs; he has bathed, anointed with various fragrant herbs as prescribed.
अर्चयिष्यति माल्यैश्च रत्नैश्च त्वां विशेषतः। इमां गिरिगुहां रम्यामभिगन्तुं त्वमर्हसि
He will especially honor you with garlands and jewels; you ought to come to this delightful mountain cave.
कुरुष्व स्वामिसम्बन्धं वानरान् सम्प्रहर्षय। एवमुक्तो हनुमता राघवः परवीरहा
Establish your bond as lord and gladden the Vānaras; thus addressed by Hanumān, Rāghava, the destroyer of enemy heroes—
प्रत्युवाच हनूमन्तं बुद्धिमान् वाक्यकोविदः। चतुर्दश समाः सौम्य ग्रामं वा यदि वा पुरम्
The wise and eloquent Rāma replied to Hanumān: 'For fourteen years, gentle one, whether it be a village or a city—'
न प्रवेक्ष्यामि हनुमन् पितुर्निर्देशपालकः। सुसमृद्धां गुहां दिव्यां सुग्रीवो वानरर्षभः
'I shall not enter, Hanumān, for I am upholding my father's command; let Sugrīva, the foremost of Vānaras, enter the splendid cave as is proper.'
प्रविष्टो विधिवद् वीरः क्षिप्रं राज्येऽभिषिच्यताम्। एवमुक्त्वा हनूमन्तं रामः सुग्रीवमब्रवीत्
'Let the heroic one, having entered as prescribed, be quickly consecrated in the kingdom.' Having thus spoken to Hanumān, Rāma addressed Sugrīva—
वृत्तज्ञो वृत्तसम्पन्नमुदारबलविक्रमम्। इममप्यङ्गदं वीरं यौवराज्येऽभिषेचय
'Knowing conduct, endowed with good conduct, noble in strength and valor—consecrate this heroic Aṅgada also as crown prince.'
ज्येष्ठस्य हि सुतो ज्येष्ठः सदृशो विक्रमेण च। अङ्गदोऽयमदीनात्मा यौवराज्यस्य भाजनम्
'For the eldest son of the eldest, equal in valor, is this Aṅgada, undaunted in spirit, worthy of the office of crown prince.'
पूर्वोऽयं वार्षिको मासः श्रावणः सलिलागमः। प्रवृत्ताः सौम्य चत्वारो मासा वार्षिक संज्ञिताः
'This is the first month of the rainy season, Śrāvaṇa, when the waters arrive; the four months called the rainy season have begun, gentle one.'
नायमुद्योगसमयः प्रविश त्वं पुरीं शुभाम्। अस्मिन् वत्स्याम्यहं सौम्य पर्वते सहलक्ष्मणः
'This is not the time for action; enter the auspicious city. I shall remain on this mountain, gentle one, together with Lakṣmaṇa.'
इयं गिरिगुहा रम्या विशाला युक्तमारुता। प्रभूतसलिला सौम्य प्रभूतकमलोत्पला
'This delightful, spacious mountain cave is filled with pleasant breezes, abundant waters, and many lotuses and water-lilies, gentle one.'
कार्तिके समनुप्राप्ते त्वं रावणवधे यत। एष नः समयः सौम्य प्रविश त्वं स्वमालयम्
'When Kārtika arrives, then, for the slaying of Rāvaṇa, this is our agreement, gentle one; you should enter your own abode.'
अभिषिञ्चस्व राज्ये च सुहृदः सम्प्रहर्षय। इति रामाभ्यनुज्ञातः सुग्रीवो वानरर्षभः
'Consecrate yourself in the kingdom and gladden your friends.' Thus permitted by Rāma, Sugrīva, the foremost of Vānaras—
प्रविवेश पुरीं रम्यां किष्किन्धां वालिपालिताम्। तं वानरसहस्राणि प्रविष्टं वानरेश्वरम्
Entered the delightful city of Kiṣkindhā, once ruled by Vāli; thousands of Vānaras followed their lord as he entered.
अभिवार्य प्रविष्टानि सर्वतः प्लवगेश्वरम्। ततः प्रकृतयः सर्वा दृष्ट्वा हरिगणेश्वरम्
Having surrounded the lord of the monkeys from all sides, all the chiefs, upon seeing the leader of the monkey hosts,
