Covered with masses of flowers and garlands of lotuses, enveloped by radiant decorations resembling the color of the young sun.
Seeing such a palanquin, Rāma said to Lakṣmaṇa, 'Let Vāli be laid down quickly; let the funeral rites be performed.'
Then Sugrīva, together with Aṅgada, lifted Vāli and placed him on the palanquin, crying aloud.
Having placed Vāli, who had departed from life, on the palanquin, they adorned him with various ornaments, garlands, and garments.
Then King Sugrīva, lord of the monkeys, ordered, 'Let the funeral rites for the noble one be performed properly.'
Let the monkeys go ahead, scattering many kinds of jewels, and let the palanquin follow after.
The special splendor of kings is seen on earth; let the monkeys perform the honors for their lord in the same manner here.
They quickly performed Vāli’s funeral rites, and Tāra and others, embracing Aṅgada, did so at once.
All the monkeys, bereft of their kinsman, went forth, crying; then all the monkey women, devoted to him, followed.
All the monkey women, led by Tāra and others, bereft of their kinsman, cried out, 'O hero, O hero!' and lamented for their beloved.
They followed their husband, crying with voices full of sorrow; and in the forest, the sound of the monkey women’s weeping echoed.
The forests and mountains seemed to cry out everywhere; on the banks of mountain rivers, in secluded places covered with water.
Many monkeys, dwellers of the forest, built the funeral pyre, and then the foremost monkeys lowered the palanquin from their shoulders.
All of them, overwhelmed by grief, stood aside together; then Tara saw her husband lying on the palanquin.
Deeply distressed, she placed his head on her lap and lamented: 'O great king of the monkeys, O my beloved protector!'
'O most precious, mighty-armed one, O my dear, look at me! Why do you not see me, who am crushed by sorrow?'
'Even though your life has departed, your face here appears radiant, O bestower of honor, and its color is not faded, just as when you were alive.'
'It is Time, in the form of Rama, who drags you away, O monkey, by whom all of us have been made widows with a single arrow in battle.'
'Here are your monkey wives, O king, the vanara women, who have come along the path, their feet weary—do you not notice them?'
'Surely these, with faces like the moon, are your cherished wives; why do you not look now at Sugriva, O lord of the monkeys?'
'Here are your ministers, beginning with Tara, O king, and these citizens of your city, all gathered around, grieving.'
'Dismiss these ministers, O subduer of enemies, as before; then let us all, filled with longing, sport together in the forests.'
As Tara, surrounded by grief for her husband, lamented in this way, the monkey women, themselves worn by sorrow, tried to raise her up.
Then Angada, together with Sugriva, weeping for his father, placed him on the funeral pyre, his senses overwhelmed by grief.
Then, having offered fire according to the rites, he walked counterclockwise around his father, whose senses were agitated, as he set out on the long journey.
Having performed the funeral rites for Vali according to custom, the foremost monkeys went to the auspicious river with pure water to offer libations.
There, all together, placing Angada at the front, Sugriva and Tara with them, they poured water for Vali.
Then Rama, sharing Sugriva's sorrow, though mighty, became sorrowful himself, and performed the funeral duties for the dead.
Then the monkey, having kindled the funeral fire for Vali, who was of supreme strength and had been slain by the illustrious scion of Ikshvaku, approached Rama, accompanied by Lakshmana.
