स महात्मा कुलीनायां युक्तायां सुमहाबलान् । वैदर्भ्यां जनयामास चतुरः सदृशान् सुतान् ॥१-३२-
That great soul, endowed with immense strength, begot four worthy sons with a noble and virtuous woman from Vidarbha.
कुशाम्बं कुशनाभं च असूर्तरजसं वसुम् । दीप्तियुक्तान् महोत्साहान् क्षत्रधर्मचिकीर्षया ॥१-३२-
Kuśāmba, Kuśanābha, Asūrtarajas, and Vasu—radiant, energetic, and intent on upholding the duties of the warrior class—were their names.
तानुवाच कुशः पुत्रान् धर्मिष्ठान् सत्यवादिनः । क्रियतां पालनं पुत्रा धर्मं प्राप्स्यथ पुष्कलम् ॥१-३२-
Kuśa addressed his sons, who were righteous and truthful: 'My sons, govern well; by upholding righteousness, you will obtain great merit.'
कुशस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा चत्वारो लोकसत्तमाः । निवेशं चक्रिरे सर्वे पुराणां नृवरास्तदा ॥१-३२-
Hearing Kuśa’s words, those four foremost among men, the noble princes, each established their own cities.
कुशाम्बस्तु महातेजाः कौशाम्बीमकरोत् पुरीम् । कुशनाभस्तु धर्मात्मा पुरं चक्रे महोदयम् ॥१-३२-
Kuśāmba, of great splendor, founded the city of Kauśāmbī; Kuśanābha, righteous in soul, established the city of Mahodaya.
असूर्तरजसो नाम धर्मारण्यं महीपतिः । चक्रे पुरवरं राजा वसुनाम गिरिव्रजम् ॥१-३२-
Asūrtarajas, the king, made a city called Dharmāraṇya; and Vasu, the ruler, founded the excellent city of Girivraja.
एषा वसुमती राम वसोस्तस्य महात्मनः । एते शैलवराः पञ्च प्रकाशन्ते समन्ततः ॥१-३२-
O Rāma, this land of Vasu, the great soul, is here; and these five excellent mountains shine all around.
सुमागधी नदी रम्या मागधान् विश्रुताऽऽययौ । पञ्चानां शैलमुख्यानां मध्ये मालेव शोभते ॥१-३२-
The delightful river Sumāgadhī, famed among the Māgadhas, flows here, gracing the midst of these five chief mountains like a garland.
सैषा हि मागधी राम वसोस्तस्य महात्मनः । पूर्वाभिचरिता राम सुक्षेत्रा सस्यमालिनी ॥१-३२-
This, O Rāma, is the Māgadhī river of the great Vasu, long frequented, fertile, and abundant with crops.
कुशनाभस्तु राजर्षिः कन्याशतमनुत्तमम् । जनयामास धर्मात्मा घृताच्यां रघुनन्दन ॥१-३२-
Kuśanābha, the royal sage, righteous in soul, begot a hundred incomparable daughters with Ghṛtācī, O descendant of Raghu.
तास्तु यौवनशालिन्यो रूपवत्यः स्वलङ्कृताः । उद्यानभूमिमागम्य प्रावृषीव शतह्रदाः ॥१-३२-
They, adorned with youth and beauty, splendidly decorated, entered the garden grounds like a hundred rivers in the rainy season.
गायन्त्यो नृत्यमानाश्च वादयन्त्यस्तु राघव । आमोदं परमं जग्मुर्वराभरणभूषिताः ॥१-३२-
Singing, dancing, and playing instruments, O Rāghava, adorned with fine ornaments, they experienced supreme delight.
अथ ताश्चारुसर्वाङ्ग्यो रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि । उद्यानभूमिमागम्य तारा इव घनान्तरे ॥१-३२-
Then those maidens, beautiful in every limb and unmatched in form on earth, entered the garden grounds like stars among the clouds.
ताः सर्वा गुणसम्पन्ना रूपयौवनसंयुताः । दृष्ट्वा सर्वात्मको वायुरिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१-३२-
Seeing all those maidens, endowed with every virtue, beauty, and youth, the wind-god, lord of all beings, spoke these words:
अहं वः कामये सर्वा भार्या मम भविष्यथ । मानुषस्त्यज्यतां भावो दीर्घमायुरवाप्स्यथ ॥१-३२-
'I desire you all; you shall become my wives. Abandon your human state, and you will attain long life.'
चलं हि यौवनं नित्यं मानुषेषु विशेषतः । अक्षयं यौवनं प्राप्ता अमर्यश्च भविष्यथ ॥१-३२-
'Youth is fleeting among humans, but you will obtain unfading youth and become immortal.'
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा वायोरक्लिष्टकर्मणः । अपहास्य ततो वाक्यं कन्याशतमथाब्रवीत् ॥१-३२-
Hearing these words of the wind-god, whose actions are effortless, the hundred maidens laughed and replied as follows:
अन्तश्चरसि भूतानां सर्वेषां सुरसत्तम । प्रभावज्ञाश्च ते सर्वाः किमर्थमवमन्यसे ॥१-३२-
O best of the gods, you move within all beings; all are aware of your power. Why, then, do you disregard us?
कुशनाभसुता देव सर्वाः समस्ताः सुरसत्तम । स्थानाच्च्यावयितुं देवं रक्षामस्तु तपो वयम् ॥१-३२-
O divine one, we are all daughters of Kuśanābha, O best of the gods. We practice austerity to protect ourselves from being removed from our proper place, O god.
मा भूत् स कालो दुर्मेधः पितरं सत्यवादिनम् । अवमन्य स्वधर्मेण स्वयं वरमुपास्महे ॥१-३२-
Let not such a time come, O misguided one, when you would dishonor our truthful father. We ourselves, following our own duty, seek a husband through him.
पिता हि प्रभुरस्माकं दैवतं परमं च सः । यस्य नो दास्यति पिता स नो भर्ता भविष्यति ॥१-३२-
For our father is our lord and our highest deity; whoever our father gives us to, he shall be our husband.
तासां तु वचनं श्रुत्वा हरिः परमकोपनः । प्रविश्य सर्वगात्राणि बभञ्ज भगवान् प्रभुः ॥१-३२-
Hearing their words, the god Hari, greatly enraged, entered all their bodies and broke them, the blessed lord, the powerful one.
अरत्निमात्राकृतयो भग्नगात्रा भयार्दिताः । ताः कन्या वायुना भग्ना विविशुर्नृपतेर्गृहम् । प्रविश्य च सुसम्भ्रान्ताः सलज्जाः सास्रलोचनाः ॥१-३२-
Their bodies broken by the wind, reduced to the size of a finger, terrified, those maidens entered the king's house; entering, they were greatly agitated, modest, and their eyes filled with tears.
स च ता दयिता भग्नाः कन्याः परमशोभनाः । दृष्ट्वा दीनास्तदा राजा सम्भ्रान्त इदमब्रवीत् ॥१-३२-
Seeing his beloved daughters broken and distressed, the king, greatly troubled, spoke these words.
किमिदं कथ्यतां पुत्र्यः को धर्ममवमन्यते । कुब्जाः केन कृताः सर्वाश्चेष्टन्त्यो नाभिभाषथ । एवं राजा विनिःश्वस्य समाधिं संदधे ततः ॥१-३२-
"What is this? Tell me, daughters. Who has disregarded righteousness? By whom have you all been made crooked? You move about but do not speak." Thus the king, sighing deeply, then composed himself.

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा कुशनाभस्य धीमतः । शिरोभिश्चरणौ स्पृष्ट्वा कन्याशतमभाषत ॥१-३३-
Hearing the words of the wise Kuśanābha, the hundred maidens touched his feet with their heads and spoke.
वायुः सर्वात्मको राजन् प्रधर्षयितुमिच्छति । अशुभं मार्गमास्थाय न धर्मं प्रत्यवेक्षते ॥१-३३-
"O king, the wind, who pervades all, sought to violate us, following an unrighteous path, disregarding righteousness."
पितृमत्यः स्म भद्रं ते स्वच्छन्दे न वयं स्थिताः । पितरं नो वृणीष्व त्वं यदि नो दास्यते तव ॥१-३३-
"We are under our father's authority, O blessed one; we are not independent. Choose our father; if he gives us to you, then we are yours."
तेन पापानुबन्धेन वचनं न प्रतीच्छता । एवं ब्रुवन्त्यः सर्वाः स्म वायुनाभिहता भृशम् ॥१-३३-
"Because he did not accept our words, bound to sin, and as we spoke thus, we were all struck harshly by the wind."
