पठ्यते येषु चैवैष गृहेषु श्रीस्तवो मुने । अलक्ष्मीः कलहाधारा न तेष्वास्ते कदाचन
O sage, in those houses where this hymn to Śrī is recited, misfortune and quarrels never dwell.
एतत् ते कथितं ब्रह्मने यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि । क्षीराब्धौ श्रीर्यथा जाता पूर्व्व भृगुसुता सती
Thus I have told you, O Brāhmaṇa, as you asked me, how Śrī, the daughter of Bhṛgu, was first born from the ocean of milk.
इति सकलविभूत्यवाप्तिहेतुः स्तुतिरियमिन्द्रमुखोदूगता हि लक्ष्म्याः । अनुदनमिह पठ्यते नृबिर्यै र्वसति नेषु कदाचिदप्यलक्ष्मीः
This hymn, which brings all attainments and arose from the mouth of Indra to Lakṣmī, when recited here by men, never allows misfortune to reside in their homes.
मैत्रेय उवाच । कथितं मे त्वया सर्व्व यत्पृष्टोऽसि महामुने । भृगुसर्गात् प्रभृत्येष सर्गो मे क्थ्यतां पुनः
Maitreya said: All that I asked, O great sage, you have told me. Now tell me again, beginning from the creation of Bhṛgu.
पराशर उवाच । भृगोः ख्यात्यां समुत्पन्ना लक्ष्मीर्विष्णुपरिग्रहः । तथा धातृविधातरौ ख्यात्यां जातौ सुतौ भृगोः
Parāśara said: Lakṣmī was born to Khyāti, daughter of Bhṛgu, and became the consort of Viṣṇu. Likewise, Dhātṛ and Vidhātṛ, two sons, were born to Bhṛgu by Khyāti.
आयतिर्नियतिश्चैव मैरोः कन्ये महात्मनः । धातृविधात्रोस्ते भार्य्ये तयोर्जातौ सुतावुभौ
Āyati and Niyati were the daughters of the great soul Mairā; Dhātṛ and Vidhātṛ took them as wives, and each had sons by them.
प्राणश्चैव मृकण्डुश्च मार्कण्डेयो मृकण्जुतः । ततो वेदशीरा जज्ञे प्राणस्यापि सुतं श्वृणु
Prāṇa and Mṛkaṇḍu were born, and from Mṛkaṇḍu came Mārkaṇḍeya; then Vedaśīrṣa was born—listen to the son of Prāṇa as well.
प्राणस्य कृतिमान् पुत्रो राजवांश्व ततोऽभवत् । ततो वंशो महाभाग विस्तारं भार्गवो गतः
Prāṇa's son was Kṛtimān, and from him came Rājavāṃśa; from him, O illustrious one, the Bhārgava lineage spread widely.
पत्नी मरीचेः सम्भूतिः पौर्णामासमसूयत । विरजाः सर्व्वगश्चैव तस्य पुत्रौ महात्मनः
The wife of Marīci was Sambhūti; she gave birth to Paurṇamāsa, and to that great soul were born two sons, Virajā and Sarvaga.
वंशसंकीर्त्तने पुत्रान् वदिष्येऽहं तयोद्रिज । स्मृतिश्वाङ्गिरसः पत्री प्रसूताः कन्यकास्तथा
In recounting the lineage, I will tell you of the sons born from her, O twice-born; from Smṛti and from Aṅgiras were born sons, and daughters as well.
सिनीवाली कुहूशचैव राका चानुमतिस्तथा । अनुसूया तथैवात्रेर्जज्ञ पुत्रानकल्मषान्
Sinīvālī, Kuhū, Rākā, and Anumati were born; likewise, Anasūyā gave birth to the sinless sons of Atri.
प्रीत्यां पुलस्त्यभार्य्ययां दत्तोलिस्तत्सुतोऽभवत्
From Prīti, the wife of Pulastya, was born the son Datoli.
पूर्व्वजन्मनि योऽगस्त्यः स्मृतः स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे । कर्दमश्वावरीयांश्व सहिष्णुश्व सूतत्रयम्
In a previous birth, Agastya is said to have existed in the Svāyambhuva Manvantara; Kardama, Śvāvarīya, and Sahiṣṇu were his three sons.
क्षमा तु सुषुवे भार्य्या पुलहस्य प्रजापतेः । क्रतोश्व सन्नतिर्भार्य्या बालखिल्यानसूयत
Kṣamā, the wife of the progenitor Pulaha, gave birth; and Sannati, the wife of Kratu, gave birth to the Bālakhilyas.
षष्टिर्यानि सहस्त्राणि यतीनामूद्ध्व रेतसाम् । अङ्गुष्ठपर्व्वमात्राणां जलदूभास्करतेजसाम्
Sixty thousand ascetics, with upward-flowing seed, each the size of a thumb-joint, radiant like water, smoke, and the sun, were born.
ऊर्ज्जायाञ्च विशिष्ठस्य सप्ताजायन्त वै सुताः । रजोगात्रोर्ध्वबाहुश्व वसनश्वानघस्तथा
From Ūrjjā, the wife of Viśiṣṭha, seven sons were indeed born: Rajogātra, Ūrdhvabāhu, Vasana, and Anagha as well.
सुतपाः शुक्र इत्येते सर्व्वे सप्तर्षयोऽमलाः । योऽसावग्निरभिमानी ब्रह्मणस्तनयोऽग्रजः
Sutapā and Śukra—these are all the seven spotless sages; he who is the lord of fire, the eldest son of Brahmā.
तस्मात् स्वाहा सुतांल्लेभे त्रीणुदारौजसो द्रिज । पावकं पावमानञ्च शुचिञ्चापि जलाशिनम्
From him, through Svāhā, three sons were born, O twice-born: Pāvaka, Pāvamāna, and Śuci, who consumes water.
तेषान्तु सन्ततावन्ये चत्वारिंशज्व पञ्च च । एवमेकोनपञ्चाशद् वह्नयः परिकीर्तिताः
From them, in succession, were born forty-five others; thus, forty-nine fires are enumerated.
कथ्यन्ते वह्नयश्चैते पिता पुत्रत्रयञ्च यत् । पितरो ब्रह्मणा सृष्टा व्याख्याता ये मया तव
These fires are described as father and three sons; the ancestors created by Brahmā have been explained to you by me.
अग्रिष्वात्ता बहिर्षदोऽनग्रयः साग्नयश्व ये । तेभेयः स्वधा सुते जज्ञ मैनां वैधारिणीं तथा
The Agniṣvāttas, Bahirṣads, Anagnis, and Sāgnis—these, along with Svadhā, gave birth to Mainā and Vaidhāriṇī.
ते उबे ब्रह्मवादिन्यौ योगिन्यौ चाप्युभे द्रिज । उत्तमज्ञानसम्पन्ने सर्व्वैः समुदितैर्गुणौः
Both were learned in Brahman, both were yoginīs, O twice-born; endowed with supreme knowledge and all virtues.
इत्येषा दक्षकन्यानां कथितापत्यसन्ततिः । श्वद्धावान् संस्मरन्नेताम् अनपत्यो न जायते
Thus is recounted the progeny of Dakṣa's daughters; whoever remembers this lineage with faith does not remain childless.
श्रीपराशर उवाच प्रियव्रतोत्तानपादौ मनोः स्वायंभुवस्य तु । द्वौ पुत्रौ तु महावीर्यौ धर्मज्ञौ कथितौ तव ॥ १,११.
Śrī Parāśara said: Priyavrata and Uttānapāda, the two mighty and righteous sons of Svāyambhuva Manu, have been described to you.
तयोरुत्तानपादस्य सुरुच्यामुत्तमः सुतः । अभीष्टायामभूद्ब्रह्यन्पितुरत्यन्तवल्लभः ॥ १,११.
Of these, Uttānapāda had a son named Uttama by Suruci, his beloved wife, who was exceedingly dear to his father.
सुनीतिर्नाम या राज्ञस्तस्यासीन्महिषी द्विज । स नाति प्रीतिमांस्तस्यामभूद्यस्या ध्रुवः सुतः ॥ १,११.
The king's queen named Sunīti, O twice-born, was not greatly favored by him; her son was Dhruva.
राजासनस्थितस्याङ्कं पितुर्भ्रतरमाश्रितम् । दृष्ट्वोत्तमं ध्रुव श्चक्रे तमारोढुं मनोरथम् ॥ १,११.
Dhruva saw his father's brother's son, Uttama, seated on the king's lap, and wished in his heart to climb up as well.
प्रत्यक्षं भूपतिस्तस्याः सुरुच्या नाभ्यनन्दत । प्रणयेनागतं पुत्रमुत्संगारोहणोत्सुकम् ॥ १,११.
The king, present there, did not welcome his son, who had come with affection and eagerness to climb onto his lap.
सपत्नी तनयं दृष्ट्वा तमङ्कारोहणोत्सुकम् । स्वपुत्रं च तथारूढं सुरुचिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥ १,११.
Suruci, seeing her co-wife's son eager to climb onto the lap, and her own son already seated there, spoke these words.
क्रियते किं वृथा वत्स महानेष मनोरथः । अन्यस्त्रीगर्भजातेन ह्यसंभूय ममोदरे ॥ १,११.
Why do you desire in vain, child, such a great wish? One born from another woman cannot attain what is not conceived in my womb.
