ते तस्य फणनिः श्वास- वह्निनापहतत्विषः । निस्तेजसोऽसुराः सर्वे बभुवुरमितद्यु ते
Struck by the fire from Vasuki's breath upon his hoods, all the asuras lost their energy and became dispirited on that day.
तेनैव मुखनिःशास-वायुनास्तबलाहकैः पुच्छप्रदेशे वर्षद्भिस्तथा चाप्यायिताः सुराः
By the wind from Vasuki's breath at his mouth, thick clouds formed and rained at the tail end, thus refreshing the gods.
क्षीरोदमध्ये भगवान् कूर्म्मरूपो स्वयं हरिः । मन्थनाद्रे रधिष्ठानं भ्रमतोऽभून्महामुने
In the midst of the Milk Ocean, the Lord Hari himself, in the form of a tortoise, became the base for the churning mountain, O great sage.
रूपेणान्येन देवानां मध्ये चक्रगदाधरः । चकर्ष भोगिराजानं दैत्यमध्येऽपरेण च
Assuming another form among the gods, bearing the discus and mace, he pulled the king of serpents; and among the daityas, he took yet another form.
उपर्य्यक्रान्तवान् शैलं बृहदूरूपेण केशवः । तथापरेण मैत्रय यन्न दृष्टं सुरासुरैः
With a vast form, Keshava supported the mountain from above; and, O Maitreya, with yet another form unseen by gods and asuras.
तेजसा नागराजानं तथाप्यायितवान् हरिः । अन्येन तेजसा देवान् उपबृं हितवान् विभुः
With his energy, Hari invigorated the king of serpents, and with another power, the mighty one strengthened the gods.
मथ्यमाने ततस्तस्मिन् क्षीराब्धौ देव-दानवैः । हविर्धामाभवत् पूर्व्व सुरभिः सुरपूजिता
As the gods and daityas churned the Milk Ocean, the revered Surabhi, the giver of offerings, first arose.
जग्मुर्म्मुदं ततो देवा दानवाश्च महामुने । व्याक्षिप्तचेतसश्चैव बभूवुस्तिमितेक्षणाः
Then the gods rejoiced, and the daityas too, O great sage; but their minds were agitated and their eyes bewildered.
किमेतदिति सद्धानां दिवि चिन्तयतां ततः । बभूव वारुणो देवी मदाधूर्णितलोचना
As those of pure faith in heaven wondered, 'What is this?', then appeared Varuni, the goddess, her eyes rolling from intoxication.
कृतावर्त्तातू ततस्तस्मात् क्षीरोदादू वासयन् जगत् । गन्धेन पारिजातोऽभूदू देवस्त्रीनन्दस्तरुः
Then from the swirling of the ocean, spreading fragrance throughout the world, Parijata, the divine tree of threefold delight, arose.
रूपौदार्य्यगुणोपेतस्ततश्चाप्सरसां गणः । क्षीरोदधेः समुत्पन्नो मैत्रय परमाद्भुतः
Endowed with beauty, nobility, and virtues, then arose the wondrous host of apsaras from the Milk Ocean, O Maitreya.
ततः शीतांशुरभवजूजगृहे त्वं महेश्वरः । जगृहुश्च विषं नागाः क्षीरोदाज्व समुत्थितम्
Then the moon arose, and you, O Maheshvara, took it; and the nagas took the poison that emerged from the Milk Ocean.
ततो धन्वन्तरिर्देवः श्वेताम्बरधरस्स्वयम् । विभ्रत्कमण्डलुं पुर्णममृतस्य समुत्थितः
Then Dhanvantari, the god, clad in white garments and holding a full water-pot, himself arose bearing the nectar.
ततः स्वस्थमनस्कास्ते सर्व्वे दैतेय-दानवाः । बभूवुर्म्मुदिताः सर्व्वे मैत्रेय मुतिभिः सह
Then all the daityas and danavas, their minds restored, became joyful along with their companions, O Maitreya.
ततः स्फुरत्कान्तिमती विकासिकमले स्थिता । श्रीर्देवी पयसस्तस्मादुत्थिता भृतपंकजा
Then, radiant and resplendent, standing upon a blossoming lotus, the goddess Śrī emerged from the waters, supported by the lotus.
तां तुष्टु वुर्म्मुदा युक्ताः श्रीसूक्तेने महर्षयः । विशावसुमुखास्तस्या गन्धर्वाः पुरतो जगुः
The great sages, filled with joy, praised her with hymns to Śrī; before her, the Gandharvas, led by Viśāvasu, sang.
घृताचीप्रमुखा ब्रह्मन् ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः । गङ्गाद्याः सरितस्तोयैः स्नानार्थमुपतस्थिरे
Led by Ghṛtācī, the hosts of Apsarases danced, O Brahman; rivers beginning with Gaṅgā approached with their waters for her bath.
दीगूगजा हेमपात्रस्थम् आदाय विमलं जलम् । स्नापयाञ्चक्रिरे देवीं सर्व्वलोकामम्लहेश्वरीम्
The guardians of the directions, bringing pure water in golden vessels, bathed the goddess, the sovereign of all worlds.
क्षीरोदो रुपधृक् तस्यै मालामम्लानपङ्कजाम् । ददौ विभूषणान्यङ्ग विश्वकर्मा चकार च
The Ocean of Milk, taking a visible form, gave her a garland of unfading lotuses; Viśvakarman fashioned ornaments for her body.
दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरा स्नाता भूषणभूषिता । पश्यतां सर्व्वदेवानां ययौ वक्षःस्थलं हरेः
Clad in divine garments and adorned with ornaments, bathed and garlanded, she went to the chest of Hari as all the gods looked on.
तयावलोकिता देवा हरिवक्षःस्थलस्थया । लक्ष्म्या मैत्रय सहसा परां निर्वृतिमागताः
When Lakṣmī, standing upon Hari's chest, looked upon the gods, O Maitreya, they were instantly filled with supreme joy.
उद्रगं परमं जग्मुर्दैत्या विष्णुपराङूमुखाः । त्यक्ता लक्षम्या महाभाग विप्रचित्तिपुरोगमाः
The Daityas, led by Vipracitti, abandoned by Lakṣmī and turned away from Viṣṇu, became greatly agitated and distressed.
ततस्ते जगृहुर्द्दैत्या धन्वन्तरिकरे स्थितम् । कमण्डलुं महावीर्य्या यत्रास्ते तदू द्रिजामृतम्
Then the Daityas seized the water-pot held by Dhanvantari, of great power, in which was the nectar sought by the twice-born.
मायया लोभयित्वा तान् विष्णुः स्त्रीरूपमास्थितः । दानवेभ्यस्तदादाय देवेभ्यः प्रददौ विभुः
Viṣṇu, assuming the form of a woman, beguiled them by his illusion, took the nectar from the Dānavas, and gave it to the gods.
ततः पपुः सुरगणाः शक्राद्यास्तत् तदामृतम् । उद्यतायुधनिस्त्रिंशा दैत्यास्तांश्व समभ्ययुः
Then the hosts of gods, led by Indra, drank that nectar; the Daityas, weapons raised, rushed upon them.
पीतेऽमृते च बलिभिर्देवैर्दैत्यचमुस्तदा । वध्यमाना दिशो भेजे पातालं तु विवेश वै
When the gods, empowered by the nectar, fought, the Daitya army was struck down and fled in all directions, finally entering Pātāla.
तदा देवा मुदा युक्ताः शङ्र्वचक्रगदाभृतम् । प्रणिपत्य यथापूर्वम् आशासत त्रिविष्टपम्
Then the gods, filled with joy, bowed as before to him who bears the conch, discus, and mace, and returned to heaven.
ततः प्रसन्नभाः सूर्य्यः प्रययौ स्वेन वर्त्मना । ज्योतींषि च यथामार्ग प्रययुर्मु निसत्तम
Then the sun, his radiance restored, proceeded on his own path; the stars too, O best of sages, moved along their courses.
जज्वाल भगवांश्वोज्व श्वौरुदीप्तिर्व्विभावसुः । धर्म्मे च सर्व्वभूतानां तदा मतिरजायत
The blessed fire blazed forth with brilliant light; in all beings, righteousness arose in their minds.
त्रैलोक्यञ्च श्रिया जुष्टं बभूव मुनिसत्तम । शक्रश्व त्रिदशश्रेष्ठः पुनः श्रीमानजायत
The three worlds became adorned with prosperity, O best of sages; Indra, chief of the gods, once more became glorious.
