शक्तयो यस्य देवस्य ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादिकाः । भवन्त्यभूतपूर्वस्य तद्रिष्णोः परमं पदम्
The powers of that god, beginning with Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva, arise from him who was never before—his supreme state is that of Viṣṇu.
सव्वेश सर्व्वभूतात्मन् सर्व्व सर्वाश्रयाच्युत । प्रसीद विष्णो भक्तानां भक्तानां व्ररकज नो दृष्टिगोचरम्
O Lord of all, soul of all beings, all, the refuge of all, imperishable one, Viṣṇu, be gracious to your devotees; let your form be visible to us, your devotees.
इत्युदीरितमाकर्ण्य ब्रह्मणस्त्रिदशास्ततः । प्रणम्योचुः प्रसीदेति व्रज नो दृष्टिगोचरम्
Hearing this utterance, Brahmā and the gods then, bowing, said: 'Be gracious, come into our sight.'
यन्नाय भगवान् ब्रह्मा जानाति परमं पदम् । तन्नताः स्म जगद्धा तव सर्व्व गताच्युत
That supreme state which even the blessed Brahmā does not know—we bow to you, O sustainer of the world, in whom all abides, O imperishable one.
इत्यन्ते वचसस्तेषां देवानां ब्रह्मणस्तथा । ऊचुर्देवर्षयः सर्व्वै बृहस्पतिपुरोगमाः
At the end of their words, the gods and Brahmā, along with all the divine sages led by Bṛhaspati, spoke thus.
आद्यो यज्ञपुमानिडयो यः सर्व्वेषाञ्च पूर्व्वजः । तं नताः स्म जगत्स्त्रष्टुः स्त्रष्टारमविशेषणम्
He who is the first, the origin of sacrifice, the ancestor of all—him, the creator of the world, the unqualified creator, we bow to.
भगवन् भूतभव्येश जगन्मूर्त्तिधराव्यय । प्रसीद प्रणतानां त्वं सर्व्वेषां देहि दर्शनम्
O Blessed Lord, Lord of past and future, bearer of the form of the universe, imperishable one, be gracious to those who bow; grant a vision of yourself to all.
एष ब्रह्मा तथैवायं सह रुदैस्त्रिलोचनः । सर्वादित्यः समं पूषा पावकोऽय सहाग्निभिः
Here is Brahmā, and likewise Rudra with the three eyes, all the Ādityas, Pūṣā together, and Pāvaka with the fires.
अश्विनौ वसवश्चेमे सव चैते मरुदूगणाः । साध्या विश्वे तथा देवा देवेन्द्रश्चायमीश्वरः
The Ashvins, the Vasus, Sāva, and the hosts of Maruts, the Sādhyas, the Viśve Devas, and also the lord of the gods, Devendra, are here.
प्रणामप्रवणा नाथ दैत्यसैन्यपराजिताः । शरणां त्वामनुप्राप्ताः समस्ता देवतागणाः
O Lord, all the hosts of gods, defeated by the armies of the Daityas, have come to you, bowing in reverence, seeking refuge.
एव संस्तूयमानस्तु भगवाञ्छरङ्वचक्रधूक् । जगाम दर्शनं तेषां मैत्रेय परमेश्वरः
Thus being praised, O Maitreya, the Supreme Lord, bearing the bow Śārṅga and the discus, appeared before them.
तं दृष्ट्वा ते तदा देवाः शर्ङ्वचक्रगदाधरम् । अपूर्व्वरूपसंस्थानं तेजसां राशिमूर्ज्जितम्
Seeing him then, the gods beheld him holding the bow, discus, and mace, of an unprecedented form and stature, a mass of radiant energy.
प्रणम्य प्रणताः पूर्व्वं संक्षोभस्तिमितेक्षणाः । तुष्टुवुः पुण्डरीकाक्षं पितामहपुरोगमाः
Having bowed down first, with eyes wide in awe, the gods, led by the Grandfather (Brahmā), praised the lotus-eyed one.
नमो नमोऽविशेषस्त्वं त्वं ब्रह्मा त्वं पिनाकधृक् । इन्द्रस्त्वमग्रिः पवनो वरुणः सविता यमः
Salutations, salutations to you, the undifferentiated one; you are Brahmā, you are the wielder of Pināka (Śiva), you are Indra, Agni, Vāyu, Varuṇa, Sūrya, and Yama.
वसवो मरुतः साध्या विश्वे देवगणा भवान् । योऽयं तवागतो देव समीपं देवतागणः
You are the Vasus, the Maruts, the Sādhyas, and all the hosts of gods; this assembly of deities has come near you, O Lord.
स त्वमेव जगत्स्त्रष्टा यतः सर्व्वगतो भवान् । त्वं यज्ञस्त्वं वषटूकारस्त्वमोङ्करः प्रजापतिः
You alone are the creator of the universe, for you are all-pervading; you are the sacrifice, the syllable vaṣaṭ, the sacred syllable oṃ, and Prajāpati.
वेद्यावेद्यञ्च सर्व्वात्मंस्त्वन्मयञ्चाखिलं जगत् । त्वामत्र शरणां विष्णो प्रयाता दैत्यनिर्ज्जिताः
You are both the knower and the known, the soul of all; the entire universe is pervaded by you. O Viṣṇu, conquered by the Daityas, we have come to you for refuge.
वयं प्रसीद सर्वात्मंस्तेजस्याप्याययस्व नः । तावदर्त्तिस्तथा वाञ्छा तावन्मोहस्तथासुखम्
O soul of all, be gracious to us; replenish our strength with your energy. May our suffering, desires, delusion, and sorrow remain only until we reach your refuge.
यावन्नायाति शरणं त्वामशेषाघनाशनम् । त्वं प्रसादं प्रसन्नात्मन् प्रपन्नानां कुरुष्व नः
Until we reach you, the destroyer of all sins, as our refuge, O gracious one, show your favor to us who have surrendered.
तेजसां नाथ सर्वेषां स्वशत्त्याप्यायनं कुरु
O Lord of all radiance, restore the strength of all by your own power.
एवं संस्तूयमानस्तु प्रणतैरमरैर्हरिः । प्रसन्नदृष्टिर्भगवानिदमाह स विश्वकृत्
Thus praised by the gods who had bowed down, Hari, the creator of the universe, with a gracious gaze, spoke these words.
तेजसो भवतां देवाः करिष्याम्युपबृ हणम् । वदाम्यहं यत् क्रियतां भवद्भिस्तदिद सुराः
O gods, I will restore your strength; tell me, O gods, what should be done by you.
आनीय सहिता दत्यैः क्षीराब्धौ सकलौषधीः । मन्थानं मन्दरं कृत्वा नेत्रं कृत्वा तु वासुकिम्
Bring together all the herbs with the Daityas to the ocean of milk; use Mount Mandara as the churning rod and Vāsuki as the rope.
मथ्यतामभृतं देवाः सहाये मय्यवस्थिते । सामपूर्व्वञ्च दैतेयास्तत्र साहाय्यकर्मणि
Let the gods, with my assistance, churn the ocean; let the Daityas, with conciliation, also join in this work of cooperation.
सामान्यफलभोक्तारो यूयं वाच्या भविष्यथ मथ्यमाने च तत्राब्धौ यतू समुत्पद्यतेऽमृतम्
You will be told that you are to share the common fruits; and whatever nectar arises when the ocean is churned—
तत्पानाद् बलिनो यूयममराश्व भविष्यथ । तथा चाहं करिष्यामि यथा त्रिदशाविद्रिषः । न प्राप्स्यन्त्यमृतं देवाः केवलं क्लेशभागिनः
By drinking that, you gods will become strong and immortal; and I will act so that the gods alone, not the Daityas, will obtain the nectar, while the others will only gain toil.
इत्युत्तवा देवदेवेन सर्व्व एव ततः सुराः । सन्धानमसुरैः कृत्वा यत्नवन्तोऽमृतेऽभवन्
Thus addressed by the Lord of gods, all the gods then made a pact with the asuras and strove together for the nectar.
नानौषधीः समानीय देव-दैतेयदानवाः । क्षिप्त्वा क्षिराब्धीपयसि शरदभ्रामलत्विषि
Gathering various herbs, the gods, daityas, and danavas cast them into the waters of the Milk Ocean, shining like autumn clouds and creepers.
मन्थानं मन्दरं नेत्रं कृत्वा च वासुकिम् । ततो मथितुमारब्धा मैत्रैय तरसामृतम्
Using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and Vasuki as the rope, they then began to churn vigorously for the nectar, O Maitreya.
विबुधाः सहिताः सर्व्वे यतः पुच्छं ततःकृताः । कृष्णेन वासुकेर्दैत्याः पूर्व्वकाये निवेशिताः
All the gods together took hold of Vasuki's tail, while by Krishna's arrangement, the daityas were stationed at his head.
