Among gods, animals, and humans, the masculine name is Bhagavan Hari; the feminine name is Shri, and nothing exists beyond these two.
Parashara said: Listen to this also, O Maitreya, which you have asked me here; I will narrate to you that which is connected with Shri, as I have heard.
Durvasa, a portion of Shankara, wandered this earth; he saw a divine garland in the hand of a Vidyadhari.
The entire forest of sandalwood was perfumed by its fragrance; it became highly sought after by the forest-dwellers, O Brahmin.
That sage, bearing the vow of a madman, seeing that beautiful garland, asked for it from the Vidyadhara maiden of lovely form.
Requested by him, the slender-waisted Vidyadhara woman, with large eyes, respectfully gave him the garland, bowing as she did so.
Taking that garland, placing it on his own head, the sage, appearing as if mad, wandered over the earth, O Maitreya.
He saw the lord of the three worlds, the god, the husband of Shachi, standing with the gods, coming towards him, mounted on Airavata, and appearing intoxicated.
That sage, in the guise of a madman, took the garland from his own head and offered it to the king of the immortals.
The king of the gods, having taken the garland from the sage, placed it upon Airavata's head, where it shone like the Ganges upon the summit of Mount Kailāsa.
Blinded by intoxication, the elephant, attracted by the scent, seized the garland with its trunk, smelled it, and cast it down upon the earth.
Then, O Maitreya, the venerable sage Durvāsas became angry at the lord of the gods and, enraged, spoke these words to him.
Durvāsas said: 'O Indra, intoxicated by power, wicked in mind, and swollen with pride, you do not honor the garland I gave you, a symbol of fortune.'
'You did not say "thank you" nor bow before me; your cheeks were puffed with delight, and you did not even place the garland upon your head.'
'Because you do not value this garland I have given, O fool, the fortune of the three worlds will depart from you.'
'You, O Indra, consider me as equal or inferior to other Brahmins; thus, out of pride, you have shown disrespect to me.'
'Because you have cast to the ground the garland I gave, the three worlds will become bereft of prosperity for you.'
'You, O king of the gods, have slighted me out of excessive pride, though all beings, moving and unmoving, fear one whose anger has arisen.'
Then Mahendra, quickly descending from the elephant's back, sought to appease the sinless Durvāsas.
Though Indra, with deep reverence, tried to pacify him, the noble sage Durvāsas replied to the thousand-eyed one.
'I am neither compassionate nor gentle, nor does forgiveness dwell in me; know me, O Indra, to be Durvāsas, different from other sages.'
'You have vainly become proud through Gautama and other sages; know me, Durvāsas, to be the very essence of impatience.'
'Because you have become arrogant from the praises of Vasiṣṭha and other gentle sages, you now also disrespect me.'
'In the three worlds, who, seeing my face with blazing matted locks and furrowed brows, has not been seized by fear?'
'I will not forgive; why speak further, O Indra? You will not again appease me with words of supplication.'
