गुणत्रयमयं ह्यतद्ब्रह्यन् शक्तित्रयं महत् । योऽतियाति सा यात्येव परं नावर्तते पुनः ॥ १,७.
He who transcends the threefold power—composed of the three guṇas and the great principle, but not Brahman—truly attains the supreme and does not return again.
श्रीपारशर उवाच कथितस्तामसः सर्गो ब्रह्मणस्ते महामुने । रुद्रसर्गं प्रवक्ष्यामि तन्मे निगदतः शृणु ॥ १,८.
Śrī Parāśara said: The creation arising from tamas has been described to you, O great sage; now I will tell you of the creation of Rudra—listen to it as I recount it.
कल्पादावात्मनस्तुल्यं सुतं प्रध्यायतस्ततः । प्रादुरासीत्प्रभोरङ्के कुमारो नीललोहितः ॥ १,८.
At the beginning of the kalpa, as Brahmā contemplated a son like himself, a boy, blue and red, appeared on the lap of the Lord.
रुरोद सुस्वरं सोथ प्राद्रवद्दि जसत्तम । किं त्वं रोदिषि तं ब्रह्म रुदन्तं प्रत्युवाच ह ॥ १,८.
He cried out in a clear voice and ran away, O best of sages; Brahmā then said to him, 'Why are you crying?' addressing the weeping child.
नाम देहीति तं सोऽथ प्रत्युवाच प्रजापतिः । रुद्रस्त्वं देवनाम्नासि मारो दीर्धैर्यमावह । एवमुक्तः पुनः सोऽथ सप्तकृत्वो रुरोद वै ॥ १,८.
Then the Lord of creatures said to him, 'Let your name be Deha.' But you are Rudra by the name of the gods; bring forth endurance, O destroyer. Thus addressed, he cried again seven times.
ततोन्यानि ददौ तस्मै सप्त नामानि वै प्रभुः । स्थानानि चैषामष्टानां पत्नीः पुत्रांश्च स प्रभुः ॥ १,८.
Then the Lord gave him seven other names, as well as their respective abodes, wives, and sons.
भवं शर्वमथेशानं तथा पशुपतिं द्विज । भीममुग्रं महादेवमुवाच स पितामहः ॥ १,८.
O twice-born, the Grandsire named him Bhava, Śarva, Īśāna, Paśupati, Bhīma, Ugra, and Mahādeva.
चक्रे नामान्यथैतानि स्थानान्येषां चकार सः । सूर्यो जलं मही वायुर्वह्निराकाशमेव च । दीक्षितो ब्रह्मणः सोम इत्येतास्तनवः क्रमात् ॥ १,८.
He assigned these names and their abodes: the sun, water, earth, wind, fire, space, the initiated of Brahmā, and the moon—these are his forms in order.
सुवर्चला तथैवोषा विकेशी चापरा शिवा । स्वाहा दिशस्तथा दीक्षा रोहिणी च यथाक्रमम् ॥ १,८.
Suvarcalā, likewise Uṣā, and another, Vikeśī, Śivā; Svāhā, the directions, Dīkṣā, and Rohiṇī, in due order.
सूर्यादीनां द्विजश्रेष्ठ रुद्राद्यैर्नामभिः सह । पत्न्यः स्मृता महाभाग तदपत्यानि मे शृणु ॥ १,८.
O best of twice-born, the wives of the Sun and others, together with those of Rudra and the rest, are renowned; now hear from me of their illustrious offspring.
एषां सूतिप्रसूतिभ्यामिदमापूरितं जगत् ॥ १,८.
From their unions and births, this entire world has been filled.
शनैश्चरस्तथा शुक्रो लोहिताङ्गो मनोजवः । स्कन्दः सर्गोऽथ सन्तानो बुधश्चानुक्रमात्सुताः ॥ १,८.
Śanaiścara, Śukra, Lohitāṅga, Manojava, Skanda, Sarga, Santāna, and Budha—these, in order, are their sons.
एवंप्रकारो रुद्रोऽसौ सतीं भार्यामनिन्दिताम् । उपयेमे दुहितरं रक्षस्यैव प्रजापतेः ॥ १,८.
In this way, Rudra took as his blameless wife Satī, the daughter of Dakṣa, lord of creatures.
दक्षकोपाच्च तत्याज स सती स्वकलेवरम् । हिमवद्दुहित साभून्मेनायां द्विजसत्तम ॥ १,८.
Because of Dakṣa's anger, Satī abandoned her own body; O best of Brahmins, she was then born as the daughter of Himavat and Menā.
उपयेमे पुनश्चोमामनन्यां भगवान्हरः ॥ १,८.
Again, the blessed Hara took Pārvatī, unrivaled, as his wife.
देवौ धातृविधातारौ भृगोः ख्यातिरसूयत । श्रियं च देवदेवस्य पत्नी नारायणस्य या ॥ १,८.
Khyāti, the wife of Bhṛgu, gave birth to Dhātṛ and Vidhātṛ, the two gods, and also to Śrī, the wife of Nārāyaṇa, lord of the gods.
श्रीमैत्रेय उवाच क्षीराब्धौ श्रीः समुत्पन्ना श्रूयतेऽमृतमन्थने । भृगोः ख्यात्यां समुत्पन्नेत्येतदाह कथं भवात् ॥ १,८.
Śrī Maitreya said: It is heard that Śrī arose from the churning of the ocean of milk, yet you say she was born from Khyāti, daughter of Bhṛgu—how is this so?
श्रीपराशर उवाच नित्यैवैषा जगन्माता विष्णोः श्रीरनपायिनि । यथा सर्वगतो विष्णुस्तथैवेयं द्विजोत्तम ॥ १,८.
Śrī Parāśara said: She is eternally the mother of the world, the unfailing Śrī of Viṣṇu; just as Viṣṇu is all-pervading, so too is she, O best of Brahmins.
अर्थो विष्णुरियं वाणी नीतिरेषा नयो हरिः । बोधो विष्णुरियं बुद्धिर्धर्मोऽसौ सत्क्रिया त्वियम् ॥ १,८.
Meaning is Viṣṇu, speech is she; policy is she, and guidance is Hari; knowledge is Viṣṇu, wisdom is she; righteousness is he, and noble action is she.
स्त्रष्टा विष्णुरियं सृष्टिः श्रीर्भूमिर्भूधरो हरिः । सन्तोषो भगवाल्लङ्क्ष्मीस्तुष्टिर्मैत्रेय शाश्वती ॥ १,८.
The creator is Viṣṇu, creation is Śrī; earth is she, the supporter is Hari; satisfaction is the Blessed Lord, prosperity is Lakṣmī, and contentment, O Maitreya, is eternal.
इच्छा श्रीर्भगवान्कामो यज्ञोऽसौ दक्षिणा त्वियम् । आज्याहुतिरसौ देवी पुरोडाशो जनार्दनः ॥ १,८.
Desire is Śrī, the Blessed Lord is longing; sacrifice is he, offering is she; the pouring of ghee is the goddess, the sacrificial cake is Janārdana.
पत्नीशाला मुने लक्ष्मीः प्राग्वंशौ मधुसूदनः । चितिर्लक्ष्मीर्हरिर्यूप इध्मा श्रीर्भगवान्कुशः ॥ १,८.
The house of the wife, O sage, is Lakṣmī; the eastern line is Madhusūdana; the altar is Lakṣmī, Hari is the sacrificial post; fuel is Śrī, the Blessed Lord is the sacred grass.
सामास्वरूपी भगवानुद्गीतिः कमलालया । स्वाहा लक्ष्मीर्जगन्नाथो वासुदेवो हुता शनः ॥ १,८.
The Lord is the embodiment of Sāman, the chant is she who dwells in the lotus; Svāhā is Lakṣmī, the Lord of the universe is Vāsudeva, and the oblation is the offering.
शङ्करो भगवाञ्छौरिर्गौरीलक्ष्मीर्द्विजोत्तम । मैत्रेय केशवः सूर्यस्तत्प्रभा कमलालया ॥ १,८.
Śaṅkara is the Blessed Lord, Śaurī is Gaurī-Lakṣmī, O best of Brahmins; Maitreya, Keśava is the Sun, and his radiance is she who dwells in the lotus.
विष्णुः पितृगणः पद्मा स्वधा शाश्वतपुष्टिदा । द्यौः श्रीः सर्वात्मको विष्णुरवकाशोतिविस्तरः ॥ १,८.
Viṣṇu is the host of ancestors, Padmā is Svadhā, the giver of eternal nourishment; heaven is Śrī, Viṣṇu is the soul of all, vast beyond measure.
शशाङ्कः श्रीधरः कान्तिः श्रीस्तथैवानपायिनी । धृतिर्लक्ष्मीर्जगच्चेष्टा वायुः सर्वत्रगो हरिः ॥ १,८.
The moon is Śrīdhara, radiance is Śrī, unfailing; steadfastness is Lakṣmī, the activity of the world is Vāyu, and Hari is present everywhere.
जलधिर्द्विजगोविन्दस्तद्वेला श्रीर्महामुने । लक्ष्मीस्वरूपमिन्द्राणी देवेन्द्रो मधुसूदनः ॥ १,८.
O great sage, the ocean is Dvija, Govinda is that shore, Lakshmi is the form, Indrani is the goddess, and Madhusudana is the lord of the gods.
यमश्चक्रधरः साक्षाद्धूमोर्णा कमलालया । ऋद्धिः श्रीः श्रीधरो देवः स्वयमेव धनेश्वरः ॥ १,८.
Yama is the wielder of the discus himself, Dhumorna is Kamalalaya, Riddhi is Shri, Shridhara is the god, and Dhaneshvara is himself.
गौरी लक्ष्मीमंहाबागा केशवो वरुणः स्वयम् । श्रीर्देवसेना विप्रेन्द्र देवसेनापतिर्हरिः ॥ १,८.
Gauri is Lakshmi, the greatly fortunate; Keshava is Varuna himself; Shri is Devasena, O best of Brahmins, and Hari is the commander of the divine army.
अवष्टंभो गदापाणिः शक्तिर्लक्ष्मीर्द्विजोत्तम । काष्ठा लक्ष्मीर्निमेषोऽसौ मुहूर्तोऽसौ कला त्वियम् ॥ १,८.
Avastambha is the wielder of the mace, Shakti is Lakshmi, O best of Brahmins; Kashtha is Lakshmi, Nimesha is he, Muhurta is he, and this is Kala.
