The Manus, the sons of Manu, the kings, and those who possess valor—those who are devoted to the right path and are courageous—all these are the upholders of order.
Śrī Maitreya said: O Brāhman, you have spoken of this perpetual order and the so-called perpetual creation; please explain to me their true and eternal nature.
Śrī Parāśara said: The Blessed Madhusūdana, whose essence is inconceivable, brings about creation, preservation, and dissolution by means of various forms, unhindered and all-pervading.
O twice-born, there are four kinds of dissolution for all beings: occasional, elemental, absolute, and perpetual.
Of these, the occasional dissolution is called 'Brahma's'; during this, the Lord of the world sleeps, and the cosmic egg returns to its primal state.
The dissolution through knowledge is called absolute, pertaining to yogis in the Supreme Self; and the perpetual dissolution is the constant destruction of beings, day and night.
The emergence from primordial nature is called elemental creation; this is also known as daily creation, which follows the intermediate dissolution.
O best of sages, where beings are born every day, that is called perpetual creation by those who understand the meaning of the Purāṇas.
Thus, in all bodies, the Lord, the source of beings, Viṣṇu, abides and brings about creation, preservation, and dissolution.
O Maitreya, the powers of creation, preservation, and destruction, which are of Viṣṇu, revolve in all embodied beings, day and night, for ages.
He who transcends the threefold power—composed of the three guṇas and the great principle, but not Brahman—truly attains the supreme and does not return again.
Śrī Parāśara said: The creation arising from tamas has been described to you, O great sage; now I will tell you of the creation of Rudra—listen to it as I recount it.
At the beginning of the kalpa, as Brahmā contemplated a son like himself, a boy, blue and red, appeared on the lap of the Lord.
He cried out in a clear voice and ran away, O best of sages; Brahmā then said to him, 'Why are you crying?' addressing the weeping child.
Then the Lord of creatures said to him, 'Let your name be Deha.' But you are Rudra by the name of the gods; bring forth endurance, O destroyer. Thus addressed, he cried again seven times.
Then the Lord gave him seven other names, as well as their respective abodes, wives, and sons.
O twice-born, the Grandsire named him Bhava, Śarva, Īśāna, Paśupati, Bhīma, Ugra, and Mahādeva.
He assigned these names and their abodes: the sun, water, earth, wind, fire, space, the initiated of Brahmā, and the moon—these are his forms in order.
Suvarcalā, likewise Uṣā, and another, Vikeśī, Śivā; Svāhā, the directions, Dīkṣā, and Rohiṇī, in due order.
O best of twice-born, the wives of the Sun and others, together with those of Rudra and the rest, are renowned; now hear from me of their illustrious offspring.
From their unions and births, this entire world has been filled.
Śanaiścara, Śukra, Lohitāṅga, Manojava, Skanda, Sarga, Santāna, and Budha—these, in order, are their sons.
In this way, Rudra took as his blameless wife Satī, the daughter of Dakṣa, lord of creatures.
Because of Dakṣa's anger, Satī abandoned her own body; O best of Brahmins, she was then born as the daughter of Himavat and Menā.
Again, the blessed Hara took Pārvatī, unrivaled, as his wife.
Khyāti, the wife of Bhṛgu, gave birth to Dhātṛ and Vidhātṛ, the two gods, and also to Śrī, the wife of Nārāyaṇa, lord of the gods.
Śrī Maitreya said: It is heard that Śrī arose from the churning of the ocean of milk, yet you say she was born from Khyāti, daughter of Bhṛgu—how is this so?
Śrī Parāśara said: She is eternally the mother of the world, the unfailing Śrī of Viṣṇu; just as Viṣṇu is all-pervading, so too is she, O best of Brahmins.
Meaning is Viṣṇu, speech is she; policy is she, and guidance is Hari; knowledge is Viṣṇu, wisdom is she; righteousness is he, and noble action is she.
The creator is Viṣṇu, creation is Śrī; earth is she, the supporter is Hari; satisfaction is the Blessed Lord, prosperity is Lakṣmī, and contentment, O Maitreya, is eternal.
