Sukha, Siddhi, Yasha, and Kirti—these are the sons of Dharma; from Kama was born Rati, and from her son Harsha, Dharma's grandson.
Himsa became the wife of Adharma, and from them was born Anrita; their daughter was Nikriti, and from those two were born Maya and Vedana.
Maya and Vedana formed a pair; from them, Maya gave birth to Mrityu, the taker away of beings.
Vedana gave birth to her own son Duhkha, and from Raurava came forth; from Mrityu were born Vyadhi, Jara, Shoka, Trishna, and Krodha.
These are all known as the offspring of Duhkha, and are characterized by unrighteousness; they have no wives or sons, for they are all of restrained seed.
These fierce forms, O sage, are the sons of Vishnu's mind-born sons; they always bring about the dissolution of this world.
Daksha, Marichi, Atri, Bhrigu, and the other lords of creatures are, O most fortunate one, the causes of the perpetual creation in this world.
The Manus, the sons of Manu, the kings, and those who possess valor—those who are devoted to the right path and are courageous—all these are the upholders of order.
Śrī Maitreya said: O Brāhman, you have spoken of this perpetual order and the so-called perpetual creation; please explain to me their true and eternal nature.
Śrī Parāśara said: The Blessed Madhusūdana, whose essence is inconceivable, brings about creation, preservation, and dissolution by means of various forms, unhindered and all-pervading.
O twice-born, there are four kinds of dissolution for all beings: occasional, elemental, absolute, and perpetual.
Of these, the occasional dissolution is called 'Brahma's'; during this, the Lord of the world sleeps, and the cosmic egg returns to its primal state.
The dissolution through knowledge is called absolute, pertaining to yogis in the Supreme Self; and the perpetual dissolution is the constant destruction of beings, day and night.
The emergence from primordial nature is called elemental creation; this is also known as daily creation, which follows the intermediate dissolution.

O Maitreya, the powers of creation, preservation, and destruction, which are of Viṣṇu, revolve in all embodied beings, day and night, for ages.
He who transcends the threefold power—composed of the three guṇas and the great principle, but not Brahman—truly attains the supreme and does not return again.

At the beginning of the kalpa, as Brahmā contemplated a son like himself, a boy, blue and red, appeared on the lap of the Lord.
He cried out in a clear voice and ran away, O best of sages; Brahmā then said to him, 'Why are you crying?' addressing the weeping child.
Then the Lord of creatures said to him, 'Let your name be Deha.' But you are Rudra by the name of the gods; bring forth endurance, O destroyer. Thus addressed, he cried again seven times.
Then the Lord gave him seven other names, as well as their respective abodes, wives, and sons.

He assigned these names and their abodes: the sun, water, earth, wind, fire, space, the initiated of Brahmā, and the moon—these are his forms in order.
Suvarcalā, likewise Uṣā, and another, Vikeśī, Śivā; Svāhā, the directions, Dīkṣā, and Rohiṇī, in due order.
O best of twice-born, the wives of the Sun and others, together with those of Rudra and the rest, are renowned; now hear from me of their illustrious offspring.
