वेदवादांस्तथा वेदान्यज्ञ कर्मादिकं च यत् । तत्सर्वं निन्दयामासुर्यज्ञव्यासेधकारिणः ॥ १,६.
They began to revile the teachings of the Vedas, the Vedas themselves, and all sacrificial acts—thus acting as destroyers of sacrifice.
प्रवृत्तिमार्गव्युच्छित्तिकारिणो वेदनिन्दकाः । दुरात्मानो दुराचारा बभूवुः कुटिलाशयाः ॥ १,६.
They became wicked in mind and conduct, revilers of the Vedas, and disruptors of the path of righteousness, with crooked intentions.
संसिद्धायां तु वार्तायां प्रजाः सृष्ट्वा प्रजापतिः । सर्यादां स्थापयामास यथास्थानं यथागुणम् ॥ १,६.
When livelihood was established, the Lord of creatures created beings and assigned them to their proper places and stations according to their qualities.
वर्णा नामाश्रमाणां च धर्मधर्मभृतां वर । लोकांश्च सर्ववर्णानां सम्यग्धर्मानुपालिनाम् ॥ १,६.
O best upholder of righteousness, he established the castes and stages of life, and the worlds for all castes who rightly observe their duties.
प्रजापत्यं ब्रह्मणानां स्मृतं स्थानं क्रियावताम् । स्थानमैन्द्रं क्षत्रियाणां संग्रमेष्वनिवर्तताम् ॥ १,६.
The place of Brahmā is said to be for Brahmins engaged in ritual acts; the place of Indra is for Kṣatriyas who do not turn back in battle.
वैश्यानां मारुतं स्थानं स्वधर्ममनुवर्तिनाम् । गान्धर्वं शूद्रजातीनां.परिचर्यानुवर्तिनाम् ॥ १,६.
For Vaiśyas who follow their own duty, the place of the wind-god is assigned; for those born as Śūdras who engage in service, the Gandharva realm.
अष्टाशीतिसहस्राणि मुनीनामूर्ध्वरेतसाम् । स्मृतं तेषां तु यत्स्थानं तदेव गुरुवासिनाम् ॥ १,६.
The place remembered for the eighty-eight thousand sages of pure celibacy is the same as that for those who dwell with their teachers.
सप्तर्षिणां तु यत्स्थानं स्मृतं तद्वै वनौकसाम् । प्राजापत्यं गृहस्थानां न्यासिनां ब्रह्मसंज्ञितम् ॥ १,६.
The place assigned to the Seven Sages is that of forest-dwellers; for householders, the place of Prajāpati; for renunciants, the realm called Brahman.
योगिनाममृतं स्थानं स्वात्मसंतोषकारिणाम् ॥ १,६.
For yogis who are content in themselves, the immortal realm is their place.
एकान्तिनः सदा ब्रह्मध्यायिनो योगिनश्च ये । तेषां तु परमं स्थानं यत्तत्पश्यन्ति सूरयः ॥ १,६.
For those who are single-minded, always meditating on Brahman, and for yogis, their highest place is that which the wise behold.
गत्वागत्वा निवर्तन्ते चन्द्रसूर्यादयो ग्रहाः । अद्यापि न निवर्तन्ते द्वादशाक्षरचिन्तकाः ॥ १,६.
The planets such as the moon and sun come and go, but even now, those who contemplate the twelve-syllabled mantra do not return.
तामिस्त्रमन्धतामिस्त्रं महारौरवरौरवौ । असिपत्रवनं घोरं कालसूत्रमवीचिकम् ॥ १,६.
Tāmisra, Andhatāmisra, Mahāraurava, Raurava, the dreadful forest of sword-leaves, Kālasūtra, and Avīci—
विनिन्दकानां वेदस्य यज्ञव्याघातकारिणाम् । स्थानमेतत्समाख्यातं स्वधर्मत्यागिनश्च ये ॥ १,६.
These are declared as the places for those who revile the Veda, destroy sacrifice, and abandon their own duty.
श्रीपराशर उवाच ततोभिध्यायतस्तस्य जज्ञिरे मानसाः प्रजाः । तच्छरीरसमुत्पन्नैः कार्यैस्तैः करणैः सह । क्षेत्रज्ञाः समवर्तन्त गात्रेभ्यस्य स्यः धीमतः ॥ १,७.
Śrī Parāśara said: Then, as he meditated, mind-born beings arose from him; along with the faculties and actions that emerged from his body, the embodied souls came forth from the limbs of that wise one.
ते सर्वे समावर्तन्त ये मया प्रागुदाहताः । देवाद्याः स्थावरान्ताश्च त्रैगुण्यविषये स्थिताः ॥ १,७.
All those beings previously mentioned by me, from the gods down to the immovable, who exist within the domain of the three qualities, returned again.
एवंभूतानि सृष्टानि चराणि स्थावराणि च ॥ १,७.
Thus, both moving and unmoving beings were created.
यदास्य ताः प्रजाः सर्वा न व्यवर्धन्त धीमतः । अथान्यान्मानसान्पुत्रान्सदृशानात्मनोऽसृजत् ॥ १,७.
When all those creatures of the wise one did not increase, then he created other mind-born sons, similar to himself.
भृगुं पुलस्त्यं पुलहं क्रतुमङ्गिरसं तथा । मरीचिं दक्षमत्रिं च वसिष्ठं चैव मानसान् ॥ १,७.
Bhrigu, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Angiras, Marici, Daksha, Atri, and also Vasistha—these were mind-born.
नव ब्रह्माण इत्येते पुराणे निश्चयं गताः ॥ १,७.
These are determined in the Purana as the nine Brahmas.
ख्यातिं भूतिं च संभूतिं क्षमां प्रीतिं तथैव च । सन्नतिं च तथैवोर्जमनसूयां तथैव च ॥ १,७.
He then created Khyati, Bhuti, Sambhuti, Kshama, Priti, Sannati, Urja, and also Anasuya.
प्रसूतिं च ततः सृष्ट्वा ददौ तेषां महात्मनाम् । पत्न्यो भवध्व मित्युक्त्वा तेषामेव तु दत्तवान् ॥ १,७.
After creating Prasuti as well, he gave these great souls wives, saying, 'Be wives,' and thus assigned them.
सनन्दनादयो ये च पूर्वसृष्टास्तु वेधसा । न ते लोकेष्वसज्जन्त निरपेक्षाः प्रजासु ते ॥ १,७.
Those such as Sanandana and others, who were previously created by the Creator, did not attach themselves to the worlds, being indifferent to progeny.
सर्वे तेऽभ्या गतज्ञाना वीतरागा विमत्सराः । तेष्वेवं निरपेक्षेषु लोकसृष्टौ महात्मनाः ॥ १,७.
All of them, having attained knowledge, being free from passion and envy, thus indifferent, did not participate in the creation of the worlds.
ब्रह्मणोभून्महान् क्रोधस्त्रैलोक्यदहनक्षमः । तस्य क्रोधात्स मुद्भूतज्वालामालातिदीपितम् । ब्रह्मणोभूत्तदा सर्वं त्रैलोक्यमखिलं मुने ॥ १,७.
Then from Brahma arose a great wrath, capable of burning the three worlds; from his anger, a blazing mass of flames appeared, and at that time, all the three worlds became illuminated by Brahma.
भ्रकुटीकुटिलात्तस्य ललाटात्क्रोधदीपितात् । समुत्पन्न स्तदा रुद्रो मध्याह्नार्कसमप्रभः ॥ १,७.
From the furrowed, wrath-ignited brow of his forehead, Rudra arose, shining like the midday sun.
अर्धनारीनरवपुः प्रचण्डोऽतिशरीरवान् । विभजात्मानमित्युक्त्वा तं ब्रह्मान्तर्दधे ततः ॥ १,७.
Fierce and exceedingly powerful, with a form half-male and half-female, Brahma said to him, 'Divide yourself,' and then vanished.
तथोक्तोसौ द्विधा स्त्रीत्वं पुरुषत्वं तथाकरोत् । विभेदपुरुषत्वं च दशधा चैकधा पुनः ॥ १,७.
Thus addressed, he divided himself into female and male, and again into many male forms, tenfold and then again into one.
सौम्यासौम्योस्तदाशान्ताशान्तैः स्त्रीत्वं च स प्रभुः । विभेद बहुधा देवाः स्वरूपैरसितैः सितैः ॥ १,७.
Then that lord, with gentle and fierce, peaceful and unpeaceful forms, divided his female aspect into many, with various forms, dark and fair.
ततो ब्रह्मात्मसंभूतं पूर्वं स्वायंभुवं प्रभु । आत्मानमेव कृत वान्प्रजापाल्ये मनुं द्विज ॥ १,७.
Then, O twice-born, the lord Svayambhuva, previously born from Brahma himself, made himself Manu for the protection of creatures.
शतरूपां च तां नारीं तपोनिर्धूतकल्पषाम् । स्वायंभुवो मनुर्देवः पत्नीत्वे जगृहे प्रभुः ॥ १,७.
And that woman, Shatarupa, purified of faults by austerity, was taken as wife by the divine Svayambhuva Manu.
