ततः कोपपरीतात्मा भर्तूसयामास तं बलः । तथापि तमवज्ञाय चक्र किलकिलाध्वनिम् ।। ५-३६-
Then, filled with anger, Baladeva sought to punish him; yet, disregarding him, the monkey made a clattering sound.
ततः समुत्थाय बलो जग्राह मुषल रुषा । सोऽपि शैलशिलां भीमां जग्राह प्लवगोत्तमः ।। ५-३६-
Rising up, Baladeva seized the mace in wrath; and the foremost monkey grasped a massive rock.
चिक्षेप च स तां क्षिप्तां मुषलेन सहस्त्रधा । बिभेद यादवश्वेष्ठः सा पपात महीतले ।। ५-३६-
He hurled the rock, but Baladeva shattered it into a thousand pieces with the mace; it fell to the earth.
आपतन्मुषलञ्चासौ समुल्लङ्घय प्लवङ्गमः । वेगेनागम्य रोषेण तलेनोरस्यताड़यत् ।। ५-३६-
As the mace descended, the monkey leapt swiftly, and, approaching in anger, struck Baladeva's chest with his palm.
ततो बलेन कोपेन मुष्टिना मूद्धि ताड़ितः । पपात रुधिरोदूगारी द्रिविदः क्षीणाजीवितः ।। ५-३६-
Then, enraged, Baladeva struck him on the head with his fist; Dravida fell, blood pouring forth, his life exhausted.
पतता तच्छरीरेण गिरेः श्वृङ्गमदीर्य्यत । मैत्रेय!शतधा वज्रिवजणेव हि ताड़ितम् ।। ५-३६-
As his body fell, the peak of the mountain was shattered, Maitreya, split into a hundred pieces as if struck by a thunderbolt.
पुष्पवृष्टिं ततो देवा रामस्योपरि चिक्षिपुः । प्रशशंसुस्तथाभ्येत्य साध्वेतत्ते महत् कृतम् ।। ५-३६-
Then the gods showered flowers upon Rāma, praising him as they approached, saying, 'Well done! You have accomplished a great deed.'
अनेन दुष्टकपिना दैत्यपक्षोपकारिणा । जगन्निराकृतं वीर! दिष्ट्यासौ क्षयमागतः ।। ५-३६-
By this wicked monkey, who aided the demon faction, the world was troubled, O hero! By fortune, he has met his end.
इत्युक्त्वा दिवमाजग्मुर्देवा ह्टष्टाः सगुह्यकाः ।। ५-३६-
Having spoken thus, the delighted gods, along with the Guhyakas, returned to heaven.
एवंविधान्यनेकानि बलदेवस्य धीमतः । कर्म्माण्यपरिमेयाणि शेषस्य धरणीबृतः ।। ५-३६-
In this way, countless deeds of wise Baladeva, the supporter of the earth, are recounted, beyond measure.
श्रीपराशर उवाच। एवं दैत्यवधं कृष्णो बलदेव सहायवान् । चक्रे दुष्टक्षितीशानां तथैव जगतः कृते
Śrī Parāśara said: Thus, Kṛṣṇa, accompanied by Baladeva, accomplished the destruction of the demons and likewise acted for the sake of the world by eliminating wicked kings.
क्षितेश्च भारं भगवान्फाल्गुनेन समन्वितः । आवतारयामास विभुस्समस्ताक्षोहिणी वधात्
The Lord, together with Phālguṇa, removed the burden of the earth by causing the downfall of all the armies.
कृत्वा भारावतरणं भुवो हत्वाऽखिलान्नृपान् । शापव्याजेन विप्राणामुपसंहृतवान्कुलम्
Having relieved the earth's burden by slaying all the kings, he brought an end to his lineage under the pretext of a curse by the Brāhmaṇas.
उत्सृज्य द्वारकां कृष्णस्त्यक्त्वा मानुष्यमात्मनः । सांशो विष्णुमयं स्थानं प्रविवेश मुने निजम्
Abandoning Dvārakā, Kṛṣṇa relinquished his human form and, O sage, entered his own abode, which is infused with the essence of Viṣṇu.
मैत्रेय उवाच। स विप्रशापव्याजेन संजह्रे स्वकुलं कथम् । कथं च मानुषं देहमुत्ससर्ज जनार्दनः
Maitreya said: By means of the Brāhmaṇas' curse, how did he bring about the destruction of his own lineage? And how did Janārdana forsake his human body?
श्रीपराशर उवाच। विश्वामित्रस्तथा कण्वो नारदश्च महामुनिः । पिंडारके महातीर्थे दृष्ट्वा यदुकुमारकैः
Śrī Parāśara said: Viśvāmitra, Kaṇva, and the great sage Nārada, upon being seen by the sons of the Yadu dynasty at the sacred site Piṇḍāraka,
ततस्ते यौवनोन्मत्ता भाविकार्यप्रचोदिताः । सांबं जांबवतीपुत्रं भूषयित्वा स्त्रियं यथा
Then, those young men, intoxicated by youth and impelled by fate, adorned Sāmba, the son of Jāmbavatī, as a woman.
प्रश्रितास्तान्मुनीनूचुः प्रणिपातपुरस्सरम् । इयं स्त्री पुत्रकामा वै ब्रूत किं जनयिष्यति
Approaching the sages with humility and preceded by prostration, they said: 'This woman desires a son; tell us, what will she give birth to?'
श्रीपराशर उवाच। दिव्यज्ञानोपपन्नास्ते विप्रलब्धाः कुमारकैः । मुनयः कुपिताः प्रोचुर्मुसलं जनयिष्यति
Śrī Parāśara said: The sages, endowed with divine insight and deceived by the young men, became angry and declared, 'She will give birth to a pestle.'
सर्वयादवसंहारकारणं भुवनोत्तरम् । येनाखिलकुलोत्सादो यादवानां भविष्यति
That pestle will be the cause of the destruction of all the Yādavas, by which the entire lineage of the Yādavas will be annihilated.
इत्युक्तास्ते कुमारास्तु आचचक्षुर्यथातथम् । उग्रसेनाय मुसलं जज्ञे सांबस्य चोदरात्
Having heard this, the young men truthfully reported everything to Ugrasena; a pestle was born from Sāmba's womb.
तदुग्रसेनो मुसलमयश्चूर्णमकारयत् । जज्ञे तदेरकाचूर्णं प्रक्षिप्तं तैर्महोदधौ
Ugrasena had the pestle ground into powder; that powder, made from the pestle, was cast by them into the great ocean.
मुसलस्याथ लोहस्य चूर्णितस्य तु यादवैः । खंडं चूर्णितशेषं तु ततो यत्तोमराकृति
Of the pestle, which was made of iron and ground down by the Yādavas, a fragment remained, shaped like a spear-head.
तदप्यंबुनिधौ क्षिप्तं मत्स्यो जग्राह जालिभिः । घातितस्योदरात्तस्य लुब्धो जग्राह तज्जराः
That too was thrown into the ocean, and a fish caught it with its mouth; when the fish was killed, a hunter took it from its belly.
विज्ञातपरमार्थोपि भगवान्मधुसूदनः । नैच्छत्तदन्यथा कर्त्तुं विधिना यत्समीहितम्
Although Lord Madhusūdana knew the ultimate truth, he did not wish to act otherwise than what was ordained by fate.
देवैश्च प्रहितो वायुः प्रणिपत्त्याह केशवम् । रहस्येवमहं दूतः प्रहितो भगवन्सुरैः
Sent by the gods, the wind approached Keśava, bowed, and said in secret: 'I am a messenger sent by the gods, O Lord.'
वस्वश्विमरुदादित्यरुद्र साध्यादिभिस्सह । विज्ञापयति शक्रस्त्वां तदिदं श्रूयतां विभो
Along with Vasus, Aśvins, Maruts, Ādityas, Rudras, Sādhyas, and others, Śakra informs you; so listen to this, O mighty one.
भारावतरणार्थाय वर्षाणामधिकं शतम् । भगवानवतीर्णोत्र त्रिदशैस्सह चोदितः
For the purpose of relieving the earth's burden, the Lord descended here for more than a hundred years, prompted by the gods.
दुर्वृत्ता निहता दैत्या भुवो भारोऽवतारितः । त्वया मनाथास्त्रिदशा भवंतु त्रिदिवे सदा
The wicked Daityas have been slain, the burden of the earth has been lifted by you; may the gods, now without a protector, always dwell happily in heaven.
तदतीतं जगन्नाथ वर्षाणामधिकं शतम् । इदानीं गम्यतां स्वर्गो भवता यदि रोचते
O Lord of the universe, more than a hundred years have now passed; if it pleases you, now ascend to heaven.
