लाम!राम!महावाहो!क्षम्यतां क्षम्यतां त्वया । उपसंह्रियतां कोपः प्रसीद मुषलायुघ ।। ५-३५-
"Rāma! Rāma! Mighty-armed one! Forgive, forgive us! Restrain your anger, be gracious, O wielder of the mace!"
एष शाम्बः सपत्रीकस्तव निर्यातितो बल! अविज्ञातप्रभावाणां क्षम्यतामपराधिनाम ।। ५-३५-
"Here is Śāmba with his wife, released for you, O Balarāma! Forgive the offenders whose power was unknown to us."
ततो निर्यातयामासुः शाम्बं पत्रीसमन्वितम् । निष्कम्य नगरात्तूर्णां कौरवा मुनिपुङ्गव ।। ५-३५-
Then, the Kauravas quickly brought out Śāmba together with his wife, and, leaving the city at once, O best of sages—
भीष्म-द्रोण-कृपादीनां प्रणम्य वदतां प्रियम् । क्षान्तमेतन्मयेत्याह बलो बलवतां वरः ।। ५-३५-
Bowing to Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, and the others, and speaking words of conciliation, Balarāma, the foremost of the strong, said, "This is forgiven by me."
अद्याप्याघूर्णिताकारं लक्ष्यते तत् पुरं द्रिज! एष प्रवादो रामस्य बलशौर्य्योपलक्षणः ।। ५-३५-
Even today, O brāhmaṇa, that city shows signs of having been shaken; this is the well-known tale of Rāma, marking his strength and valor.
ततस्तु कौरवाः शाम्ब सम्पूज्य हलिना सह । प्रषयामासुरुद्राहधनभार्य्यासमन्वितम् ।। ५-३५-
Then the Kauravas, having honored Śāmba together with Balarāma, sent him off with his wife and wealth.
मेत्रेय!श्रूयतां तस्य बलस्य बलशालिनः । कृतं यदन्यत्तेनाभूत्तदपि श्रूयतां द्रिज ।। ५-३६-
"O Maitreya, listen to what else was done by that mighty Balarāma; hear also, O brāhmaṇa, what happened through another."
नरकस्यासुरेन्द्रस्य देवपक्षविरोधिनः । सखाभवन्महावीर्य्यो द्रिविदो नाम वानरः ।। ५-३६-
Naraka, the lord of the Asuras, who was hostile to the gods, had as a friend a mighty monkey named Dravida.
वैरानुबन्ध बलवान् स चकार सुरान् प्रित । नरक हतवान् कृष्णो बलदर्पसमन्वितम् ।। ५-३६-
Bound by enmity, he attacked the gods with force; Kṛṣṇa killed Naraka, who was filled with pride in his strength.
करिष्ये सर्व्वदेवानां तस्मादेतत्प्रतिक्रियाम् । यज्ञविध्वंसनं कुर्व्वन् मर्त्तलोकक्षयं तथा ।। ५-३६-
"Therefore, I will take action against all the gods—destroying their sacrifices and bringing ruin to the world of mortals."
ततो विध्वसयामास यज्ञानज्ञानमोहितः । बिबेद साधुमर्य्यादां क्षयं चक्र च देहिनाम् ।। ५-३६-
Then, deluded by ignorance, he destroyed sacrifices, violated the bounds of righteousness, and brought destruction to living beings.
ददाह च वनोद्देशान् पुरग्रामान्तराणि च । क्वचिज्व पर्व्वताक्षेपैर्ग्रामादीन् समचूणोयत् ।। ५-३६-
He burned forests and regions, as well as towns and villages; in some places, he crushed villages with thrown mountains.
शैलानुतूपाट्य तोयेषु मुमोचाम्बुनिधौ तथा । पुनञ्चार्णवमध्यस्थः क्षोभयामास सागरम् ।। ५-३६-
He uprooted rocks and trees and cast them into the waters of the ocean; then, standing in the midst of the sea, he agitated the waves.
तेन विक्षोभितश्वाब्धिरुद्रेलोऽजायत द्रिज । प्लावयंस्तीरजान् ग्रामान् पुरादीनतिवेगवान् ।। ५-३६-
By his disturbance, the ocean was stirred, and a flood arose, O twice-born, sweeping away villages and cities along the shores with great force.
कामरूपी महारूपं कृत्वा संस्थानशेषतः । लुण्ठन् भ्रमणसंमर्द्देः सञ्चूर्णायति वानरः ।। ५-३६-
Assuming a form at will, vast in shape, he, the monkey, crushed and scattered everything by his plundering, roaming, and violent collisions.
तेन विप्रकृतं सर्व्वं जगदेतदूदुरात्मना । निः स्वाध्यायवषटूकारं मैत्रेयासीत् सुदुः खितम् ।। ५-३६-
All this world was thrown into disorder by his unruly actions, Maitreya; the recitation of sacred texts and ritual utterances ceased, and great distress arose.
एकदा रैवतोद्याने पपौ पानं हलायुधः । रेवती च महाभागा तथैवान्या वरस्त्रियः ।। ५-३६-
Once, in the garden of Raivata, Halāyudha drank wine, as did the illustrious Revatī and other noble women.
उपगीयमानो विलसल्ललनामौलिमध्यगः । रेमे यदुवरश्वष्ठः कुवेर इव मन्दरे ।। ५-३६-
Surrounded by radiant women singing, the chief of the Yadus enjoyed himself, like Kubera on Mount Mandara.
ततः स वानरोऽभ्येत्य गृहीत्वा सीरिणो हलम् । मुषलञ्च चकारास्य सम्मुख़्च बिड़म्बनम् ।। ५-३६-
Then the monkey approached, seized the plough of Sīriṇa, and brandished it and the mace before him.
तथैव योषितां तासां जहासाभिमुखं कपिः । पानपूर्णाश्व करकांश्विक्षेपाहत्य वै तदा ।। ५-३६-
In the same way, the monkey laughed facing those women, striking their wine-filled cups from their hands.
ततः कोपपरीतात्मा भर्तूसयामास तं बलः । तथापि तमवज्ञाय चक्र किलकिलाध्वनिम् ।। ५-३६-
Then, filled with anger, Baladeva sought to punish him; yet, disregarding him, the monkey made a clattering sound.
ततः समुत्थाय बलो जग्राह मुषल रुषा । सोऽपि शैलशिलां भीमां जग्राह प्लवगोत्तमः ।। ५-३६-
Rising up, Baladeva seized the mace in wrath; and the foremost monkey grasped a massive rock.
चिक्षेप च स तां क्षिप्तां मुषलेन सहस्त्रधा । बिभेद यादवश्वेष्ठः सा पपात महीतले ।। ५-३६-
He hurled the rock, but Baladeva shattered it into a thousand pieces with the mace; it fell to the earth.
आपतन्मुषलञ्चासौ समुल्लङ्घय प्लवङ्गमः । वेगेनागम्य रोषेण तलेनोरस्यताड़यत् ।। ५-३६-
As the mace descended, the monkey leapt swiftly, and, approaching in anger, struck Baladeva's chest with his palm.
ततो बलेन कोपेन मुष्टिना मूद्धि ताड़ितः । पपात रुधिरोदूगारी द्रिविदः क्षीणाजीवितः ।। ५-३६-
Then, enraged, Baladeva struck him on the head with his fist; Dravida fell, blood pouring forth, his life exhausted.
पतता तच्छरीरेण गिरेः श्वृङ्गमदीर्य्यत । मैत्रेय!शतधा वज्रिवजणेव हि ताड़ितम् ।। ५-३६-
As his body fell, the peak of the mountain was shattered, Maitreya, split into a hundred pieces as if struck by a thunderbolt.
पुष्पवृष्टिं ततो देवा रामस्योपरि चिक्षिपुः । प्रशशंसुस्तथाभ्येत्य साध्वेतत्ते महत् कृतम् ।। ५-३६-
Then the gods showered flowers upon Rāma, praising him as they approached, saying, 'Well done! You have accomplished a great deed.'
अनेन दुष्टकपिना दैत्यपक्षोपकारिणा । जगन्निराकृतं वीर! दिष्ट्यासौ क्षयमागतः ।। ५-३६-
By this wicked monkey, who aided the demon faction, the world was troubled, O hero! By fortune, he has met his end.
इत्युक्त्वा दिवमाजग्मुर्देवा ह्टष्टाः सगुह्यकाः ।। ५-३६-
Having spoken thus, the delighted gods, along with the Guhyakas, returned to heaven.
एवंविधान्यनेकानि बलदेवस्य धीमतः । कर्म्माण्यपरिमेयाणि शेषस्य धरणीबृतः ।। ५-३६-
In this way, countless deeds of wise Baladeva, the supporter of the earth, are recounted, beyond measure.
