जहि कृत्यामिमामुग्रां वह्निज्वालाजटालकाम् । चक्रमुत्सृष्टमक्षेषु क्रीड़ासक्तेन लीलया ।। ५-३४-
Destroy this fierce Kritya, whose hair blazes with fire, by the discus, which, playfully hurled by you, is attached to the destruction of the wicked.
तदग्रिमालाजटिलज्वालोदूगारातिभीषणाम् । कृत्यामनुजगामाशु विष्णुचक्र सुदर्शनम् ।। ५-३४-
Then Sudarshana, the discus of Vishnu, swiftly pursued the Kritya, who was terrifying with a garland of flames and matted locks spewing fire.
चक्रगतापविध्वस्ता कृत्या माहेश्वरी तदा । ननाश वेगिनी वेगात् तदप्यनुजगाम ताम् ।। ५-३४-
Struck by the discus, the Kritya of Maheshvara was scattered; yet, impelled by speed, she continued on, and the discus followed her.
कृत्.या वाराणसीमेव प्रविवेश त्वरान्विता । विष्णचक्रप्रतिहतप्रभावा मुनिसत्तम ।। ५-३४-
The Kritya, filled with urgency, entered Varanasi itself, her power checked by Vishnu's discus, O best of sages.
ततः काशिबलं भूरि प्मथानां तथा बलम् । समस्तशस्त्रस्त्रयुतं चक्रस्याभिमुखं ययौ ।। ५-३४-
Then the mighty army of Kashi, and the forces of the Pishachas, all armed with weapons and missiles, advanced towards the discus.
शस्त्रस्त्रमोक्षचतुरं दग्ध्वा तदूबलमोजसा । कृत्यागर्भामशेषां तां दग्ध्वा वाराणसीं पुरीम् ।। ५-३४-
The discus, skillful in releasing weapons and missiles, burned up that entire army with its energy, and then consumed the Kritya along with the whole city of Varanasi.
सभूभृदूभृत्यपौरान्तु साश्वमातङ्गमानवाम् । अशेषकोषकोष्ठां तां दुनिंरीक्ष्यां सुरैरपि ।। ५-३४-
That city, with its king, servants, citizens, horses, elephants, and men, with all its treasures and storehouses, became a sight even the gods could scarcely behold.
ज्वालापरिप्लुताशेष-गृहृ-प्राकारचत्वराम् । ददाह तद्धरेश्वक्रं सकलामेव तां पुरीम् ।। ५-३४-
All the houses, walls, and courtyards were engulfed in flames; the discus of Hari burned the entire city completely.
अक्षीणामर्षमत्युग्रसाध्यसाधनसस्पृहम् । तज्वक्र प्रस्फुरद्दीप्ति विष्णोरभ्याययौ करम् ।। ५-३४-
That discus, undiminished in power, fierce in wrath, eager to accomplish the difficult, and flashing with radiant light, returned to the hand of Vishnu.
मैत्रेय उवाच । भूय एवाहमिच्छामि बलभद्रस्य धीमतः । श्रोतु पराक्रमं ब्रह्मन् ! तन्ममाख्यातुमर्हसि ।। ५-३५-
Maitreya said: Again I wish to hear, O Brahman, of the valorous deeds of wise Balabhadra; please recount them to me.
यमुनाकर्षणादीनि श्रुतानि भगवन्मया । तत् कथ्यतां महाभाग! यदन्यत् कृतवान् बलः ।। ५-३५-
I have heard, O blessed one, of the drawing of the Yamuna and other feats; now tell me, O most fortunate, what else Bala has done.
पराशर उवाच । मैत्रेय!श्रूयतां कर्म्म यदू रोमेणाभवत् कृतम् । अनन्तेनाप्रमेयेण शेषेणा धरणीभृता ।। ५-३५-
Parashara said: Maitreya, listen to the deed performed by the mighty and immeasurable Ananta, the supporter of the earth, among the Yadus.
दुर्य्योधनस्य तनयां खयंवरकृतक्षणाम् । बलादादत्तवान् वीरः शाम्बो जाम्बवतीसुतः ।। ५-३५-
The heroic Samba, son of Jambavati, seized by force Duryodhana's daughter at her svayamvara.
ततः क्रुद्धा महावीर्य्याः कर्ण-दुर्य्योधनादयः । भीष्म-ग्रोणादयश्चैव बबुन्धर्यघि निर्ज्जितम् ।। ५-३५-५?।। तच्छ्रत्वा यादवाः सर्व्वे क्रोधं दुर्य्योधनादिषु । मैत्रेय! चक्रुश्व ततो तिहन्तु ते महोद्यमम् ।। ५-३५-
Then, enraged, the mighty Karna, Duryodhana, and others, along with Bhishma and Drona, captured the victorious Samba.
तान् निवार्य्य बलः प्राह मदलोलाकुलाक्षरम् । मोक्ष्यन्ति ते मद्धचनादू यास्याम्येको हि कौरवान् ।। ५-३५-
Hearing this, all the Yadavas became angry with Duryodhana and the others, O Maitreya, and resolved upon a great endeavor to rescue him.
बलदेवस्तातो गत्वा नगरं नागसाह्वयम् । बाह्योपवनमध्येऽभूदू न विवेश च ततूपुरम् ।। ५-३५-
Bala restrained them, saying with words thick from pride, 'They will release him at my command; I alone shall go to the Kauravas.'
बलमागतमाज्ञाय भूपा दुर्य्योधनादयः । गामर्घ्यमुदकञ्चैव रामाय प्रत्यवेदयन् ।। ५-३५-
Recognizing that Balarāma had arrived, the kings—Duryodhana and the others—offered him the customary gifts of hospitality: a cow, arghya, and water.
गृहीत्वा विधिवत् सर्व्वं ततस्तानाह कौरवान् । आज्ञापयत्युग्रसेनः शाम्बमाशु विमुञ्चत ।। ५-३५-
Having properly received all these, he then addressed the Kauravas: 'Ugrasena commands you—release Śāmba at once.'
ततस्ते तदूचः श्रुत्वा भीष्मद्रोणादये द्रिज । कर्णादुर्य्योधनाद्याश्व चक्रुधुर्द्रिजसत्तम ।। ५-३५-
Hearing this, Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and the others, along with Karṇa, Duryodhana, and their companions, became angry, O best of Brāhmaṇas.
ऊचुश्व कुपिताः सर्व्वे वाह्लीकाद्याश्व कौरवाः । अराज्यार्हं यदोर्व्वशमवेक्ष्य मुसलायुधम् ।। ५-३५-
All the Kauravas, including Vāhlīka and the rest, spoke in anger: 'Seeing the wielder of the mace, a Yādava unfit to rule, we are to submit?'
भो भोः !किमेतद्भवता बलभद्रेरितं बचः । आज्ञां कुरुकुलोत्थानां यादवः कः प्रदास्यति ।। ५-३५-
They said, 'Ho! What is this command spoken by you, Balarāma? What Yādava will give orders to the Kuru dynasty?'
उग्रसेनोऽपि यद्याज्ञां कौरवाणां प्रदास्यति । तदलं पाण्डुरच्छत्रैर्नृ पयोग्यैर्विड़म्बितैः ।। ५-३५-
If even Ugrasena gives orders to the Kauravas, then enough of these white umbrellas and the honors reserved for kings!
तदूगच्छ बल!पापाढ्य शाम्बमन्यायचेष्टितम् । विमोक्ष्यामो न भवतो नोग्रसेनस्य शासनात् ।। ५-३५-
'Go away, Bala! Śāmba acted wrongly and deserves punishment. We will not release him at your command, nor at Ugrasena’s order.'
प्रणतिर्या कृतास्माकमार्य्याणां कुकुरान्धकैः । ननाम सा कृता केयमाज्ञा स्वामिनि भृत्यतः ।। ५-३५-
'The homage paid to us by the Kukuras and Andhakas was due to our nobility. What is this command now, as if from a master to a servant?'
गर्व्वमारोपिता युयं समानासनभोजनैः । को दोषो भवतां नितिर्यत् प्रीत्या नावलोकिता ।। ५-३५-
'You have grown proud, being treated as equals at our seats and meals. What fault is it of ours if, out of affection, we did not regard you as inferiors?'
अस्माभिरर्घो भवतो योऽयं बल! निवेदितः । प्र मूणैतन्नैतदस्माक कुल्यं युष्मत्कुलोचितम् ।। ५-३५-
'The arghya we offered you, Bala, was out of courtesy. This is not our custom, nor is it fitting for your lineage.'
इत्युक्त्वा कुरवः सर्व्वे न मुञ्चामो हरेः सुतम् । कृतैकनिश्वयास्तूर्णं विविशुर्गजसाह्वयम् ।। ५-३५-
Having spoken thus, all the Kurus declared, 'We will not release the son of Hari!' and, resolute in their decision, quickly entered the assembly hall called Gajasāhvaya.
मत्तःकोपेन चाघूर्णंस्तदधिक्षेपजन्मना । अत्थाय पार्ष्ण्या वसुधां जघान स हलायुधः ।। ५-३५-
Then Halāyudha, furious and trembling with rage at this insult, struck the earth with his heel.
ततो विदारिता पृथ्वी पार्ष्णिघातान्महात्मनः । आस्फोटयामास तथा दिशः शब्देन पूरयन् ।। ५-३५-
From that mighty one's heel-strike, the earth split open, and the sound filled all directions.
स उवाचातिताम्राक्षो भ्रु कुटीकुटिलाननः । अहो मदापलेपोऽयमसाराणां द्ररात्मनाम ।। ५-३५-
With eyes blazing red, his face twisted in anger, he said: 'Ah! This arrogance belongs to those whose hearts are empty.'
