एतत् सर्व्व महाभाग! समाख्यातु त्वमर्हसि । महत् कौतूहलं जातं कथां श्रोतुमिमां हरेः ।। ५-३२-
O most fortunate one, you should recount all this in detail; great curiosity has arisen to hear this tale of Hari.
पराशर उवाच । ऊषा वाणसुता विप्र! पार्व्वतीं सह शम्भुना । क्रीड़न्तीमुपलक्ष्योच्चैः स्पृहाञ्चक्र तदाश्रयाम् ।। ५-३२-
Paraśara said: Uṣā, the daughter of Bāṇa, O Brāhmaṇa, seeing Pārvatī playing with Śambhu, was seized with longing for such a companion.
ततः सकलाचित्तज्ञा गौरी तामाह भामिनीम् । अलमत्यर्थतापेन भर्त्रा त्वमपि रंस्यसे ।। ५-३२-
Then Gaurī, who knows all hearts, said to that radiant maiden: 'Enough of such intense yearning; you too will enjoy a husband.'
इत्युक्ते सा तदा चक्र कदेति मतिमात्मनः । को वा भर्त्ता ममेत्येतां पुनरप्याह पार्व्वती ।। ५-३२-
When this was said, she wondered, 'When will this be?' and 'Who will be my husband?' Again Pārvatī spoke to her.
वैशाखशुक्लद्रादश्यां स्वप्ने योऽभिभवं तव । करिष्यति स ते भर्त्ता राजपुत्रि!भविष्यति ।। ५-३२-
'On the twelfth day of the bright half of Vaiśākha, the one who approaches you in a dream will become your husband, O princess.'
तस्यां तिथौ पुमान् खप्ने यथा देव्या उदीरितम् । तथैवाभिभवं चक्र रागञ्चक्र तथैव सा ।। ५-३२-
On that date, just as the goddess had foretold, a man approached her in a dream, and she was filled with love for him.
ततः प्रबुद्धा पुरुषमपश्यन्ती तमुत्सुका । क्व गतोऽसीति निर्लज्जा मैत्रेयोक्तवती सखीम् ।। ५-३२-
Then, awakening and unable to see that man, she, eager and unashamed, said to her friend, 'Where has he gone?'
वाणस्य मन्त्री कुम्भाणडश्वित्रलेशा तु तत्सुता । तस्याः सख्यभवत् सा च प्राह कोऽय त्वयोच्यते ।। ५-३२-
The minister of Bāṇa was Kumbhāṇḍa, and his daughter Citraleśā was her friend; she asked, 'Who is this you speak of?'
यदा लज्जाकुला नास्यै कथयामास सा सती । तदा विश्वासमानीय सर्व्वमेवाभ्यवादयत् ।। ५-३२-
When, overcome with shame, she did not tell her, then Citraleśā, gaining her trust, learned everything.
विदितार्थान्तु तामाह पुनरूषा यथोदितम् । देव्या तथैव तत्प्राप्तौ योऽभ्युपायः कुरुष्व तम् । ५-३२-
Having understood the matter, Uṣā said to her as previously described: 'Do whatever means will bring about, as the goddess said, his coming to me.'
ततः पटे सुरान् दैत्यान् गन्धर्व्वांश्व प्रधानतः । मनुष्यांश्वाबिलिख्यास्यै चित्रलेखा व्यदर्शयत् ।। ५-३२-
Then Citraleśā showed her, on a cloth, the principal gods, demons, and gandharvas, and also men.
अपास्य सा तु गन्धर्व्वांस्तथोरगसुरासुरान् । मनुष्येषु ददौ दृष्टिं तेष्वप्यन्धकवृष्णिषु ।। ५-३२-
She dismissed the gandharvas, serpents, and gods and demons, and among men, she fixed her gaze upon the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis.
कृष्ण-रामौ विलोक्यासौ सुभ्रु र्लज्जाजड़ेव सा । प्रद्यु म्रदर्शाने व्रीड़ा-दृष्टिं निन्येऽन्यतो द्रिज ।। ५-३२-
Seeing Krishna and Rama, that beautiful-browed lady, overcome with modesty, turned her gaze away, casting a shy glance elsewhere, O twice-born.
दृष्टमात्रे ततः कान्ते प्रद्यु म्रतनये द्रिज । दृष्ट्यात्यर्थविकाशिन्या लज्जा क्कापि निराकृता ।। ५-३२-
But when the beloved son of Pradyumna looked at her, O Brahmin, her eyes blossomed with intense emotion, and all her shyness vanished.
सोऽयं सोऽयमितीत्युक्त तया सा योगगामिनी । ययौ द्रारवतीमूषां समाश्वास्य ततः सखीम् ।। ५-३२-
She said, 'It is he, it is he,' and, her mind absorbed in yoga, she comforted her friend and went swiftly to Dvaravati.
चक्र कर्म्म महच्छौरिर्बिब्राणो मानुषीं तनुम् । जिगाय शक्र सर्व्वञ्च सर्व्वदेवांश्व लीलया ।। ५-३४-
The great thief, bearing the discus and assuming a human form, easily defeated Indra and all the gods in play.
यज्वान्यदकरोत् कर्म्म दिव्यचेष्टाविघातकृत् । तत् कथ्यतां महाभाग!परं कातूहलं हि मे ।। ५-३४-
He performed another act, disrupting the divine rites of the sacrificers; tell me of that, O most fortunate one, for I am filled with great curiosity.
पराशर उवाच । गदतो मम विप्रर्षे!श्रूयतामिदमादरात् । नरावतारे कृष्णेन दग्धा वाराणसी यथा ।। ५-३४-
Parashara said: O best of sages, as you speak, listen with care to how Varanasi was burned by Krishna in his human incarnation.
पौण्डुको वासुदेवस्तु वासुदेवीऽभवद् भिवि । अवतीर्णस्त्वमित्युक्तो जनैरज्ञानमोहितैः ।। ५-३४-
Paundraka Vasudeva, deluded by ignorance, became convinced by the people that he was the true Vasudeva incarnate.
स-मेने वासुदेवोऽहमवतीर्णो महीतले । नष्टस्मृतिस्ततः सर्व्व विष्णचिह्निमचीकरत् ।। ५-३४-
He thought, 'I am Vasudeva, descended to earth,' and, having lost his memory, he adorned himself with all the emblems of Vishnu.
दूतञ्च प्रेरयामास कृष्णाय सुमहात्मने । त्यत्तवा चक्रादिकं चिह्न मदीयं नाम चात्मनः ।। ५-३४-
He sent a messenger to the great-souled Krishna, demanding that Krishna relinquish the discus and other emblems, as well as the name belonging to himself.
वासुदेवात्मकं मूढ़!मुत्तवा सर्व्वं विशेषतः । आत्मनो जीवितार्थाय ततो मे प्रणति व्रज ।। ५-३४-
'O fool, give up everything that is marked as Vasudeva's, especially for the sake of your own life; then come and pay homage to me.'
इत्युक्तः सम्प्रहस्यैन दूतं प्राह जनार्द्दनः । निजचिह्नमहं चक्र समुत्स्मरक्ष्य त्वयीति वै ।। ५-३४-
Thus addressed, Janardana laughed and said to the messenger, 'I will recall and protect my own emblem, the discus, myself.'
वाच्यः स पौण्ड्रको गत्वा त्वया दूत!वचो मम । ज्ञातस्त्वद्राक्यसद्भावो यत् कार्य्यं तद्रिधीयताभ् ।। ५-३४-
'Go and tell Paundraka these words of mine, O messenger: Now that your false claim is known, do what must be done.'
गृहीतचिह्न एवाहमागमिष्यामि ते पुरम् । समुत्स्त्रक्ष्यामि ते चक्र निजनिह्नमसंशयम् ।। ५-३४-
'I will come to your city bearing my own emblems, and I will hurl my discus at you, without doubt.'
आज्ञापूर्व्वञ्च यदिदमागच्छेति त्वयोदितम् । सम्पादयिष्ये श्वस्तुभ्यं तदप्येषोऽविलम्बितम् ।। ५-३४-
'And as for your command that I should come, I will fulfill that for you tomorrow, without delay.'
शरणां ते समब्येत्य कर्त्तास्मि नृपते!तदा । यथा त्वत्त्वो भयं बूयो न मे किञ्चिद्भविष्यति ।। ५-३४-
'Having come to your refuge, O king, I will act so that you will never again have any fear from me.'
इत्युक्तेऽपगते दूते संस्मृत्याभ्यागतं हरिः । गरुत्मन्तमथारुह्य त्वरितं तत्पुरं ययौ ।। ५-३४-
When the messenger had departed after hearing this, Hari remembered the matter, mounted Garuda, and swiftly went to that city.
स चापि केशवोद्योगं श्रुत्वा काशिपतिस्तदा । सर्व्वसैन्यपरीवारः पार्ष्णिग्राह उपाययौ ।। ५-३४-
Hearing of Keshava's preparations, the king of Kashi, surrounded by his entire army, came to the battlefield.
ततो बलेन महता काशिराजबलेन च । पौण्ड्रको वासुदेवोऽसौ केशवाभिमुखं ययौ ।। ५-३४-
Then Paundraka Vasudeva, with a great force and the army of the king of Kashi, advanced to face Keshava.
