रुक्मिणी चावदत् प्रेमूणा प्रम्णा साश्रुदृष्टिरनिन्दिता । धन्यायाः खल्वयं पुत्रो वर्त्तते नवयौवने ।। ५-२७-
Rukmiṇī, pure and blameless, spoke with loving emotion and tearful eyes: 'This son of mine, blessed, stands in the prime of youth.'
अस्मिन् वयसि पुत्रो मे प्रद्यु म्रो यदि जीवति । सभाग्या जननी वतूस! त्वया कापि विभूषिता ।। ५-२७-
If my son Pradyumna lives at this age, then his mother is indeed fortunate, adorned by you, O youth.
अथवा यादृशः स्नेहो मम यादृगू वपुस्तव । हरेरपत्यं सुव्यक्त भवान् वत्स!भविष्यति ।। ५-२७-
Or, as deep as my affection is, and as your form resembles mine, it is clear, dear one, that you are the child of Hari.
एतिस्मिन्नन्तरे प्राप्तः सह कृष्णेन नारदः । अन्तः पुरचरीं देवीं रुक्मिणीं प्राह हर्षयन् ।। ५-२७-
At that moment, Nārada arrived with Krishna and joyfully addressed Rukmiṇī, who was moving about the inner chambers.
एश ते तनयः सुभ्रु! हत्वा शम्बरमागतः । ह्टतो येनाभवद् बालो भवत्याः सूतिकागृहात् ।। ५-२७-
O beautiful-browed one, this is your son, who has returned after slaying Śambara; he was taken from your birthing chamber as a child.
इयं मायावती भार्य्या तनयस्यास्य ते सती । शम्बरस्य न भार्य्येयं श्रूयतामत्र कारणम् ।। ५-२७-
This Māyāvatī is the virtuous wife of your son; she is not Śambara's wife. Listen to the reason for this.
मन्मथे तु गते नाशं तदुद्भवपरायाणा । शम्बरं मोहयामास मायारूपेण रूपिणी ।। ५-२७-
When Manmatha was destroyed, she, whose purpose was his rebirth, bewildered Śambara by taking on a magical form.
व्यवायाद्यु पभोगेषु रूपं मायामयं शुभम् । दर्शयामास दैत्यस्य तस्येयं मदिरेक्षणा ।। ५-२७-
In pleasures and enjoyments, she revealed her beautiful magical form to the demon; this woman with intoxicating eyes is she.
कामोऽवतीर्णः पुत्रस्ते तस्येयं दयिता रतिः । विशङ्का नात्र कर्त्तव्या स्नुषेयं तव शोभना ।। ५-२७-
Your son is the incarnation of Kāma, and this beloved Rati is his consort. Have no doubt; this splendid woman is your daughter-in-law.
ततो हर्षसमाविष्टा रुक्मिणी केशवस्तथा । नगरी च समस्ता सा साधु साध्वित्यभाषत ।। ५-२७-
Then Rukmiṇī, filled with joy, as was Keśava, and the entire city, exclaimed, 'Excellent! Excellent!'
चिरं नष्टेन पुत्रेण संयुक्तां प्रेक्ष्य रुक्मिणीम् । अवाप विस्मयं सर्व्वो द्रारवत्यां जनस्तदा ।। ५-२७-
Seeing Rukmiṇī reunited with her long-lost son, all the people of Dvārakā were struck with wonder.
चारुदेष्णां सुदेष्णञ्च चारुदेवञ्च वीर्य्यवान् । सुषेणं चारुगुप्तञ्च भद्रचारु तथापरम् ।। ५-२८-
Cārudeṣṇa, Sudeṣṇa, Cārudeva, the mighty one, Suṣeṇa, Cārugupta, and another, Bhadracāru.
चारुविन्दं सुचारुञ्च चारुञ्च बलिनां वरम् । रुक्मिण्यजनयत् पुत्रान् कन्यां चारुमतीं तथा ।। ५-२८-
Rukmini bore sons—Caruvinda, Sucaru, Caru, and the mighty Caruvarya—and also a daughter named Carumati.
अन्याश्व भार्य्याः कृष्णस्य बभूवुः स्प्त शोभनाः । कालिन्दी मित्रविन्दा च सत्या नाग्रजिती तथा ।। ५-२८-
Krishna had other illustrious wives: Kalindi, Mitravinda, Satyā the daughter of Nagnajit, and others.
देवी जाम्बवती चापि रोहिणी कामरूपिणी । मद्रराजसुता चान्या सुशीला शीलभण्डना ।। ५-२८-
There was also the goddess Jambavati, Rohini of changing form, the princess of Madra, Sushila, and Shilabhandana.
सात्राजिती सत्यभीमा लक्ष्णा चारुहासिनी । षोड़शासन सहस्त्राणि स्त्रीणामन्यानि चक्रिणः ।। ५-२८-
Satyabhama, daughter of Satrajit, Lakshmana with the lovely smile, and sixteen thousand other wives belonged to the wielder of the discus.
प्रद्यु म्रोऽपि महावीर्य्यो रुक्मिणस्तनयां शुभाम् । स्वयंवरस्थां जग्राह सा च तं तनय हरेः ।। ५-२८-
Pradyumna, of great valor, took as his wife the auspicious daughter of Rukmi, who was at her own svayamvara; she bore him a son of Hari.
यस्यामस्याभवत् पुत्रो महाबलपराक्रमः । अनिरुद्धो रणो क्रे द्धो वीर्य्योदधिररिन्दमः ।। ५-२८-
To her was born a son, Aniruddha, of immense strength and prowess, a subduer of enemies and an ocean of heroism.
तस्यापि रुक्मिणः पौत्रीं वरयामास केशवः । दौहित्राय ददौ रुक्मी तां स्पर्द्धन्नपि शौरिणा ।। ५-२८-
For him, Kesava sought the granddaughter of Rukmi; though Rukmi competed with Sauri, he gave her to his daughter's son.
तस्या विवाहे रामाद्या यादवा हरिणा सह । रुक्मिणो नगरं जग्मुर्नाम्रा भोजकटं द्रिज ।। ५-२८-
At that wedding, Rama and the other Yadavas, together with Hari, went to Rukmi's city, named Bhojakata, O Brahmin.
विवाहे तत्र निवृत्ते प्राद्यूम्नेः सुमहात्मनः । कलिङ्गराजप्रमुखा रुक्मिणां वाक्यमब्रु वन् ।। ५-२८-
When the wedding of the great-souled Pradyumna was completed, the kings led by the ruler of Kalinga spoke to Rukmi.
अनक्षज्ञो हली द्यूते तथास्य व्यसनं महत् । न जयामो बलं कस्मादू द्यूतेनैनं महाद्युते ।। ५-२८-
"Halayudha is unskilled at dice, and he has a great weakness for it; why should we not defeat him at this great game of dice?"
तथेति तानाह नृपान् रुक्मी बलसमन्वितः । सभायां सह रामेण चक्र द्रू तञ्च वै तदा ।। ५-२८-
Rukmi, endowed with strength, agreed and said so to the kings; then, together with Rama, he set up the dice game in the assembly.
सहस्त्रमेकं निष्काणां रुक्मिणा विजितो बलः । द्रितीयेऽपि पणे चान्यत् सहस्त्र रुक्मिणा जितम् ।। ५-२८-
In the first wager, Bala was defeated by Rukmi for a thousand gold coins; in the second wager, Rukmi again won another thousand.
ततो दश सहस्त्राणि निष्काणां पणमाददे । बलभद्रोऽजयत्तानि रुक्मी द्यूतविदां वरः ।। ५-२८-
Then, staking ten thousand gold coins, Balabhadra won them, though Rukmi was the foremost among dice players.
ततो जहास खनवत् कलिङ्गाधिपतिर्द्रिज! दन्तान् विदर्शयन् मूढ़ो रुक्मी चाह मदोद्धतः ।। ५-२८-
Then, O Brahmin, the foolish king of Kalinga laughed loudly, showing his teeth, and Rukmi, intoxicated with pride, spoke.
ग्रविज्ञोऽयं मया द्यूते बलदेवः पराजितः । मुधैवाक्षावलेपान्धो यः स्वं मेनेऽक्षकाविदम् ।। ५-२८-
"This Baladeva, though skilled at dice, has been defeated by me; blinded by his vain pride in the dice, he thought himself a master."
दृष्टा कलिङ्गराजं तं प्रकाशदशनाननम् । रुक्मिणञ्चपि दुव्वक्यिं कोपं चक्र हलायुधः ।। ५-२८-
Seeing the king of Kalinga with his mouth wide open, displaying his teeth, and hearing Rukmi's harsh words, Halayudha grew angry.
ग्लहं जग्राह रुक्मी च तदर्थेऽक्षानपातयत् ।। ५-२८-
Rukmi seized the dice and, for that purpose, cast them down.
अजयद् बलदेवस्तं प्राहोच्चैस्तं जितं मया । मयेति रुक्मी प्राहोच्चैरलीकोक्तेरलं बल ।। ५-२८-
Baladeva defeated him and proclaimed loudly, "I have won!" Rukmi, in turn, shouted, "No, I have won!" thus contradicting Bala.
