कृष्णोपि घातयित्वारिमुपायेन हि तद्वलम् । जग्राह मथुरामेत्य हस्त्यश्वस्यन्दनोज्ज्वलम् ॥ ५,२४.
And Kṛṣṇa, having destroyed the enemy's force by strategy, entered Mathurā and took possession of the splendid elephants, horses, and chariots.
आनीय चोग्रसेनाय द्वारवत्वां न्यवेदयत् । पराभिभवनिः शङ्कं बभूव च यदोः कुलम् ॥ ५,२४.
Bringing them to Ugrasena, he presented them at Dvārakā; and the Yadu clan no longer feared being overpowered.
बलदेवोऽपि मैत्रेय प्रशान्ताखिलविग्रहः । ज्ञातिदर्शनसोत्कण्ठः प्रययौ नन्दगोकुलम् ॥ ५,२४.
And Baladeva, O Maitreya, his conflicts all calmed, longing to see his kinsmen, went to Nandagokula.
ततो गोपाश्च गोप्यश्च यथा पूर्वममित्रजित् । तथैवाभ्यवदत्प्रम्णा बहुमानपुरःसरम् ॥ ५,२४.
Then the cowherds and cowherd women, O conqueror of foes, greeted him as before, with great respect and honor.
स कैश्चित्संपरिष्वक्तः कांश्चिच्च परिषस्वजे । हास्यं चक्रे समं कैश्चिद्गोपैर्गोपीजनैस्तथा ॥ ५,२४.
He embraced some, and was embraced by others; he joked together with some of the cowherds and likewise with the cowherd women.
प्रियाण्यनेकान्यवदन् गोपास्तत्र हलायुधम् । गोप्यश्च प्रेमकुपिताः प्रोचुःसेर्ष्यमथापराः ॥ ५,२४.
The cowherds there spoke many affectionate words to Baladeva; the cowherd women, some with loving anger, others with jealousy, also spoke.
गोप्यः पप्रच्छुरपरा नागरीजनवल्लभम् । कच्चिदास्ते सुखं कृष्णश्चलप्रेमलवात्मकः ॥ ५,२४.
Some of the cowherd women questioned him about Kṛṣṇa, beloved of the city women: 'Does fickle-hearted Kṛṣṇa dwell happily?'
अस्मच्चेष्टामपहसन्न कच्चित्पुरयोषिताम् । सौभाग्यमान मधिकं करोति क्षणसौहृदः ॥ ५,२४.
'Does he, mocking our actions, now grant greater fortune and honor to the city women, though his friendship with them lasts but a moment?'
कच्चित्स्मरति नः कृष्णो गीतानुगमनं कलम् । अप्यसौ मातरं द्रष्टु सकृदप्यागमिष्यति ॥ ५,२४.
'Does Kṛṣṇa remember our singing and dancing? Will he ever come, even once, to see his mother?'
अथ वा किं तदालापैः क्रियन्तामपराः कथाः । यस्यास्मभिर्विना तेन विनास्माकं भविष्यति ॥ ५,२४.
'But why speak of such matters? Let other topics be discussed. For just as we are without him, so he will be without us.'
पिता माता तथा भ्राता भर्ता बन्धुजनश्च किम् । संत्यक्तस्तत्कृतेस्माभिरकृतज्ञध्वजो हि सः ॥ ५,२४.
Father, mother, brother, husband, and other relatives—what are they? They have been abandoned by us for his sake, for he bears the banner of ingratitude.
तथापि कच्चिदालापमिहागमनसंश्रयम् । करोति कृष्णो वक्तव्यं भवता राम नानृतम् ॥ ५,२४.
Yet, does Krishna speak at all, or seek to come here? You must tell us, Rama, and do not speak falsely.
दामोदरोऽसौ गोविन्दः पुरस्त्रीसक्तमानसः । अपेतप्रीतिरस्मासु दुर्दर्शः प्रतिभाति नः ॥ ५,२४.
That Damodara, Govinda, whose mind is absorbed in city women, has lost affection for us and appears difficult to approach.
आमन्त्रितश्च कृष्णेति पुनर्दामोदरेति च । जहसुःसस्वरं गोप्यो हरिणा हृतचेतसः ॥ ५,२४.
The gopis, their hearts stolen by Hari, called out to him as 'Krishna' and then as 'Damodara,' their voices full of emotion.
संदेशैः साममधुरैः प्रेमगर्भैरगर्वितैः । रामेणाश्वासिता गोप्यः कृष्णस्यातिमनोहरैः ॥ ५,२४.
By Rama's messages, sweet and gentle, filled with love and free from pride, the gopis were comforted, for Krishna's words were exceedingly enchanting.
गोपैश्च पूर्ववद्रामः परिहासमनोहराः । कथाश्चकार रेमे च सह तैर्व्रजभूमिषु ॥ ५,२४.
Rama, as before, delighted in playful and charming conversations with the cowherds, and enjoyed himself with them in the land of Vraja.
वने विचरतस्तस्य सह गोपैर्महात्मनः । मानुषच्छद्मरूपस्य शेषस्य धरणीभृतः ।। ५-२५-
As that great soul, disguised in human form, wandered in the forest with the cowherds, so did Shesha, the bearer of the earth.
निष्पादितोरुकाय्यस्य काय्यणोर्व्वीविचारिणः । उपभोगाथमत्यर्थ वरुणः प्राह वारुणीम् ।। ५-२५-
For the enjoyment of the mighty-bodied one who roamed the earth, Varuna spoke to Varuni.
अभीष्टा सर्व्वदा यस्य मदिरे त्व!महौजसः । अनन्तस्यौपभोगाय तस्य गच्छ मुदे शुभे ।। ५-२५-
O powerful one, whose desire is always for wine, go, O auspicious Varuni, for the enjoyment of Ananta, and bring him joy.
इत्युक्ता वारुणी तेन सन्निधानमथाकरोत् । वृन्दावनवनोतूपन्न-कदम्बतरुकोटरे ।। ५-२५-
Thus addressed by Varuna, Varuni made her presence known in the hollow of a kadamba tree that had grown in the forest of Vrindavana.
विचरन् बलदेवोऽपि मदिरागन्धमुत्तमम् । आघ्राय मादरातर्षमवापाथ पुरातनम् ।। ५-२५-
As Balarama wandered, he caught the excellent scent of wine, and, with eagerness, attained the ancient desire.
ततः कदम्बात् सहसा मद्यधारां स लाङ्गली । पतन्तीं वीक्ष्य मंत्रेय !प्रययौ परमां मुदम् ।। ५-२५-
Then, suddenly, the wielder of the plough saw a stream of wine flowing from the kadamba tree, and, O Maitreya, he experienced supreme delight.
पपौ च गोपगोपीभिः समवेतो मुदान्वितः । प्रगीयमानो ललितं गीतवाद्यविशारदैः ।। ५-२५-
He drank together with the cowherds and cowherd women, filled with joy, as skilled singers and musicians performed charming songs.
समन्तोतूपन्न-घर्म्माम्भः कणिकामौक्तिकोज्जवलः । आगच्छ यमुने! स्त्रतुमिच्चामीत्त्याह विह्वलः ।। ५-२५-
Surrounded by the heat and water drops sparkling like pearls, he said, 'Come, Yamuna! I wish to bathe,' his mind overwhelmed.
तस्य वाचं नदी सा च मत्तोक्तामवमत्य वै । नाजगाम ततः क्रुद्धो हलं जग्राह लाङ्गली ।। ५-२५-
The river, disregarding his intoxicated command, did not come; then, angered, the wielder of the plough took up his plough.
गृहीत्वा तां तटे तेन चकर्ष मदविह्वलः । पापे नायासि नायासि गम्यतामिच्छयात्मनः ।। ५-२५-
Seizing her, he dragged her to the bank in his drunken state, saying, 'You wicked one, you do not come! Go as you wish!'
सा कृष्टा तेन सहसा गार्ग सन्त्यज्य निम्रगा । यत्रास्ते बलभद्रोऽसौ प्लावयामास तदूनम् ।। ५-२५-
Dragged suddenly by him, O Garga, the river abandoned her winding course and flowed where Balarama was, flooding that area.
शरीरिणी तथोत्पत्य त्रासविह्वललोचना । प्रसीदेत्यब्रवीद् रामं मुञ्च मां मुषलायुध ।। ५-२५-
Having assumed a bodily form, her eyes wide with fear, she said to Rama, 'Be gracious, O wielder of the mace, release me!'
सोऽब्रवीदवजानासि मम शौर्य्यबले यदि । सोऽहं त्वां हलपातेन विनेष्यामि सहस्त्रधा ।। ५-२५-
He said, 'If you disregard my courage and strength, then I shall strike you with my plough and shatter you into a thousand pieces.'
इत्युक्तयातिसन्त्रासात् तया नद्या प्रसादितः । भूभागे प्लाविते तस्मिन् मुमोच यमुनां बलः ।। ५-२५-
Thus spoken to, the river, terrified, pleaded with him; when the land was flooded, Balarāma released the Yamunā.
