कृष्णो ब्रवीति राजांर्हमेतद्रत्नमनुत्तमम् । सुधर्म्माख्या सभा युक्तमस्यां यदुभिरासितुम् ।। ५-२१-
Krishna says: 'This peerless jewel, the assembly hall named Sudharma, is fit for kings; let the Yadus sit within it.'
इत्युक्तः पवनो गत्वा सर्व्वमाह शचीपतिम् । ददौ सोऽपि सुधर्म्माख्यां सभां वायोः पुरन्दरः ।। ५-२१-
Thus instructed, Vayu went and reported everything to the lord of Shachi; and Purandara gave the assembly hall called Sudharma to Vayu.
वायुना चाहृतां दिव्यां सभां ते यदुपुङ्गवाः । बुभुजुः सर्व्वरत्नाढ्यां गोविन्दभुजसंश्रयात् ।। ५-२१-
The foremost of the Yadus enjoyed the divine assembly hall brought by Vayu, filled with all jewels, under the protection of Govinda’s arm.
विदिताखिलविज्ञानौ सर्व्वज्ञानमयावपि । शिष्याचार्य्यक्रमं वीरौ ख्यापयन्तौ यदूत्तमौ ।। ५-२१-
The two illustrious Yadus, possessing all knowledge and wisdom, made known the tradition of disciple and teacher, displaying it to all.
ततः सान्दीपनिं काश्यमवन्तीपुरवासिनम् । अस्त्रर्थं जग्मतुर्वीरौ बलदेव-जनार्द्दनौ ।। ५-२१-
Then the two heroes, Baladeva and Janardana, went to Sandipani, the resident of Kashi in Avanti city, to learn the science of weapons.
तस्य शिष्यत्त्वमभ्येत्य गुरुवृत्तपरौ हि तौ । दर्शयाञ्चक्रतुर्वीरावाचारमखिले जने ।। ५-२१-
Having become his disciples, the two heroes, devoted to their teacher, demonstrated proper conduct before all people.
सरहस्यं धनुर्व्वेदं ससंग्रहमधीयताम् । अहोरात्रैश्वतुः षष्ट्य तदद्भुतमभूदू द्रिज ।। ५-२१-
They studied the entire secret science of archery, including its compendium, in sixty-four days and nights; O twice-born, this was wondrous.
सान्दीपनिरसम्भाव्यं तयोः कर्म्मातिमानुषम् । विचिन्त्य तौ तदा मेन प्राप्तौ चन्द्र-दिवाकारौ ।। ५-२१-
Sandipani, reflecting on their deeds, which were beyond human capacity, considered them as the moon and sun come to earth.
अस्त्रग्राममशेषञ्च प्रोक्तमात्रमवाप्य तौ । ऊचतुर्व्रियतां या ते दातव्या गुरुदक्षिणा ।। ५-२१-
Having received the complete collection of weapons as instructed, the two said: 'Choose what you wish as your teacher’s fee.'
सोऽप्यतीन्द्रियमालोक्य तयोः कर्म्म महामतिः । अयाचत मृतं पुत्रं प्रभासे लवणार्णावे ।। ५-२१-
Perceiving their superhuman deeds, the wise teacher requested the return of his deceased son, who had perished at Prabhasa in the salt ocean.
गृहीतास्त्रौ ततस्तौ तु सार्घ्यहस्तो महोदधिः । उवाच न मया पुत्रो हतः सान्दीपनेरिति ।। ५-२१-
Then, having obtained the weapons, the two approached the great ocean, offering precious gifts, and said: 'Sandipani’s son was not slain by me.'
दैत्यः पञ्चजनो नाम शङ्खरूपः स बालकम् । जग्राह सोऽस्ति सलिले ममैवासुरसूदन ।। ५-२१-
A demon named Panchajana, in the form of a conch, seized the boy in the waters; O slayer of demons, he is there.
इत्युक्तोऽन्तर्ज्जलं गत्वा हत्वा पञ्चजनं खलम् । कृष्णो जग्राह तस्यास्थि-प्रभवं शङ्खमुत्तमम् ।। ५-२१-
Thus informed, Krishna entered the waters, slew the wicked Panchajana, and took the excellent conch formed from his bones.
यस्य नादेन दैत्यानां बलहानिरजायत । देवानां ववृधे तेजो यात्यधर्म्मश्व संक्षयम् ।। ५-२१-
By whose sound the strength of the demons was diminished, the brilliance of the gods increased, and unrighteousness was destroyed.
तं पाञ्चजन्यमापूर्य्य गत्वा यमपुरीं हरिः । बलदेवश्व बलवान् जित्वा वैवस्वतं यमम् ।। ५-२१-
Hari, filling the conch Pāñcajanya, went to the city of Yama; together with the mighty Baladeva, he conquered Yama, the son of Vivasvat.
तं बालं यातनासंस्थं यथापूर्व्वशरीरिणम् । पित्रे प्रदत्तवान् कृष्णो बलश्व बलिनां वरः ।। ५-२१-
Krishna, the foremost among the strong, restored that boy, who was enduring torment as before in his previous body, to his father.
मथुराञ्च पुनः प्राप्तावुग्रसेनेन पालिताम् । प्रहृष्टपुरुषस्त्रीकामुभौ राम-जनार्द्दनौ ।। ५-२१-
Then Rama and Janardana, filled with joy along with men and women, returned again to Mathura, which was ruled by Ugrasena.
जरासन्घसुते कंस उपयेमे महाबलः । अस्ति प्राप्तिञ्च मैत्रेय!तयोर्भर्त्तृहनं हरिम् ।। ५-२२-
O Maitreya, the mighty Kamsa, son of Jarasandha, married Asti and Prapti; for both of them, Hari became the slayer of their husband.
महाबलपरीवारो मगधाघिपतिर्बली । हन्तुमभ्याययौ कोपाज्जरासन्धः सयादवम ।। ५-२२-
Surrounded by a host of powerful warriors, the mighty king of Magadha, Jarasandha, came in anger with the Yadavas to kill them.
उपेत्य मथुरां सोऽथ रुरोध मगधेखरः । अक्षौहिणीभिः सैन्यस्य त्रयोविंशतिभिर्वृतः ।। ५-२२-
Then, having reached Mathura, the lord of Magadha besieged it, accompanied by twenty-three divisions of his army.
निष्कम्याल्पपरीवारावुभौ राम-जनार्द्दनौ । युयुधातौ समं तस्य बलिनौ बलिसैनिकैः ।। ५-२२-
Rama and Janardana, with only a small retinue, went out and fought equally against his mighty warriors in battle.
ततो बलश्व कृष्णश्व चक्राते मतिमुत्तमाम् । आयुधानां पुराणानामादाने मुनिसत्तम ।। ५-२२-
Then, O best of sages, Bala and Krishna resolved to obtain the ancient weapons.
अनन्तरं हरेः शाङ्ग तूणौ चाक्षयसायकौ । आकाशादागतौ वीर!तथा कौमोदकी गदा ।। ५-२२-
Immediately, O hero, the inexhaustible quivers and the bow Shārnga of Hari, as well as the mace Kaumodaki, descended from the sky.
हलञ्च बलभद्रस्य गगनादागतं कवे ! मनसोऽभिमतं विप्र!सौनन्दं मुसलं तथा ।। ५-२२-
And, O poet, the plough of Balabhadra and the Saunanda pestle, both desired in their minds, also came from the sky, O Brahmin.
ततो युद्धे पराजित्य ससैन्यं मगधाधिपम् । पुरीं विविशतुर्वीरावुभौ राम-जनार्द्दनौ ।। ५-२२-
Then, having defeated the king of Magadha and his army in battle, the two heroes, Rama and Janardana, entered the city.
जते तस्मिन् सुदुर्वृत्ते जरासन्धे महामुने ! जीवमाने गते कृष्णस्तं नामन्यत निर्ज्जितम् ।। ५-२२-
Although Jarasandha, of exceedingly wicked conduct, survived, O great sage, Krishna did not consider him conquered.
पुनरप्याजगामाथ जरासन्धो बलान्वितः । जितश्व राम-कृष्णाभ्यामपक्रान्तो द्रिजोत्तम।। ५-२२-
Then again Jarasandha, accompanied by his forces, came; but defeated by Rama and Krishna, he withdrew, O best of twice-born.
दश चाष्टौ च संग्रामानेवमत्यन्तदुर्म्मदः । यदुभिर्मागधो राजा चक्र कृष्णापुरोगमैः ।। ५-२२-
Thus, in eighteen battles, the Magadhan king, exceedingly arrogant, fought with the Yadus, Krishna at their head.
सर्व्वेष्वेतेषु युद्धेषु यादवैः स पराजितः । अपक्रान्तो जरासन्धः स्वल्पसैन्यैर्बलाधिकः ।। ५-२२-
In all those battles, Jarasandha, though possessing superior strength, was defeated by the Yadavas and withdrew with only a few soldiers.
तदू बल यादवानां तैरर्ज्जितं यदनेकशः । तत्तु सन्निधिमाहात्म्यं विष्णोरंशस्य चक्रिणः ।। ५-२२-
O Bala, whatever victories the Yadavas gained over him again and again, that was due to the presence and greatness of Vishnu, the wielder of the discus.
