ततस्तु वैश्वदेवाख्यं कुर्यान्नित्यक्रियां बुधः । भुञ्जीयाच्च समं पूज्यभृत्यबन्धुभिरात्मनः
Afterwards, the wise should perform the daily rite called Vaiśvadeva; and he should eat together with those worthy of honor, servants, and relatives.
एवं श्राद्धं बुधः कुर्यात्पित्र्यं मातामहं तथा । श्राद्धैराप्यायिता दद्युः सर्वान् कामान् पितामहाः
Thus, the wise should perform the śrāddha for paternal and maternal ancestors; when satisfied by śrāddha offerings, forefathers grant all desires.
त्रीणि श्राद्धे पवित्राणि दौहित्रः कुतपस्तिलाः । रजतस्य तथा दानं कथासङ्कीर्तनादिकम्
Three things purify the śrāddha: the grandson, the sacred grass, and sesame seeds; also, the gift of silver, recitation of stories, and singing praises.
वर्ज्यानि कुर्वता श्राद्धं क्रोधोऽध्वगमनं त्वरा । भोक्तुरप्यत्र राजेन्द्र त्रयमेतन्न शस्यते
When performing śrāddha, anger, travel, and haste should be avoided; these three are not recommended even for the eater, O king.
विश्वेदेवाः सपितरस्तथा मातामहा नृप । कुलं चाप्यायते पुंसां सर्वं श्राद्धं प्रकुर्वताम्
The Viśvedevas, ancestors, maternal forebears, and the family itself are all nourished by those who properly perform śrāddha.
सोमाधारः पितृगणो यागाधारश्च चन्द्रमाः । श्राद्धे योगिनियोगस्तु तस्माद्भूपाल शस्यते
The group of ancestors is sustained by Soma, and the moon is the basis of sacrifice; the union of yoga in śrāddha is therefore praised, O king.
सहस्त्रस्यापि विप्राणां यौगी चेत्पुरतः स्थितः । सर्वान् भोक्तॄंस्तारयति यजमानं तथा नृप
If a yogi stands before a thousand Brāhmaṇas, he delivers all the eaters and the sacrificer as well, O king.
(श्राद्धकर्मणि विहिताविहितवस्तूनां विचारः) और्व उवाच हविष्यमत्स्यमांसैस्तु शशस्य नकुलस्य च । सौकरच्छागलैणेयरौरवैर्गवयेन च
Aurva said: Offerings for śrāddha may include sacrificial food, fish, meat of hare, mongoose, pig, goat, sheep, deer, and wild ox.
औरभ्रगव्यैश्च तथा मासवृद्ध्या पितामहाः । प्रयान्ति तृप्तिं मांसैस्तु नित्यं वाध्रीणसामिषैः
Similarly, meat of ram and wild ox, given according to the month, satisfies the ancestors; they are always pleased with the meat of the vadhrīṇasa.
खड्गमांसमतीवात्र कालशाकं तथा मधु । शस्तानि कर्मण्यत्यन्ततृप्तिदानि नरेश्वर
Swordfish meat, kālaśāka greens, and honey are excellent for the rite, O king, and give utmost satisfaction.
गयामुपेत्य यः श्राद्धं करोति पृथिवीपते । सफलं तस्य तज्जन्म जायते पितृतुष्टिदम्
O ruler of the earth, whoever performs śrāddha at Gayā attains a fruitful birth, bringing satisfaction to the ancestors.
प्रशान्तिकास्सनीवाराः श्यामाका द्विविधास्तथा । वन्यौषधीप्रधानास्तु श्राद्धार्हाः पुरुषर्षभ
Praśāntikā, sanīvārā, and two kinds of śyāmāka, as well as wild medicinal herbs, are suitable for śrāddha, O best of men.
यवाः प्रियङ्गवो मुद्गा गोधूमा व्रीहयस्तिलाः । निष्पावाः कोविदाराश्च सर्षपाश्चात्र शोभनाः
Barley, priyaṅgu, mung beans, wheat, rice, sesame, peas, kovidāra, and mustard are all auspicious here.
अकृताग्रयणं यच्च धान्यजातं नरेश्वर । राजमाषानणूंश्चैव मसूरांश्च विसर्जयेत्
O king, grains not used for the first-fruits offering, as well as rajamāṣa, anū, and masūra beans, should be excluded.
अलाबुं गृञ्जनं चैव पलाण्डुं पिण्डमूलकम् । गान्धारककरम्बादिलवणान्यौषराणि च
Gourd, gṛñjana, onion, radish, gandhāraka, karamba, and salt from mines should also be excluded.
आरक्ताश्चैव निर्यासाः प्रत्यक्षलवणानि च । वर्ज्यान्येतानि वै श्राद्धे यच्च वाचा न शस्यते
Red resins and visible salts are likewise to be avoided in śrāddha, as well as anything not praised in speech.
नक्ताहृतमनुच्छिन्नं तृप्यते न च यत्र गौः । दुर्गन्धि फेनिलं चाम्बु श्राद्धयोग्यं न पार्थिव
Where milk is taken at night without interruption, the cow is not satisfied; water that is foul-smelling and frothy is not suitable for the śrāddha, O king.
क्षीरमेकशफानां यदौष्ट्रमाविकमेव च । मार्गं च माहिषं चैव वर्जयेच्छ्राद्धकर्मणि
For the śrāddha ritual, one should avoid the milk of animals with a single hoof, as well as camel and sheep, and also the path and the buffalo.
षण्ढापविद्धचाण्डालपापिपाषण्डिरोगिभिः । कृकवाकुश्वननग्नैश्च वानरग्रामसूकरैः
By eunuchs, outcasts, those born of mixed castes, wicked men, heretics, the diseased, crows, dogs, the naked, monkeys, villagers, and pigs—
उदक्यासूतकाशौचिमृतहारैश्च वीक्षिते । श्राद्धे सुरा न पितरो भुञ्जते पुरुषर्षभ
If the śrāddha is seen by women who fetch water, women in childbirth, those in impurity, those who handle corpses, then, O best of men, the ancestors do not partake of the offering.
तस्मात्परिश्रिते कुर्याच्छ्राद्धं श्रद्धासमन्वितः । उर्व्यां च तिलविक्षेपाद्यातुधानान्निवारयेत्
Therefore, one should perform the śrāddha with faith in a purified place, and on the earth, one should prevent the scattering of sesame seeds by demons.
नखादिना चोपपन्नं केशकीटादिभिर्नृप । न चैवाभिषवैर्मिश्रमन्नं पर्युषितं तथा
Food that is contaminated by nails or hair, or by insects and the like, O king, and food mixed with leftovers or that is stale, should not be used.
श्रद्धासमन्वितैर्दत्तं पितृभ्यो नामगोत्रतः । यदाहारास्तु ते जातास्तदाहारत्वमेति तत्
Whatever is offered to the ancestors with faith, naming their lineage, by those who are devoted, that food becomes their nourishment.
श्रूयते चापि पितृर्भिगीता गाथा महीपते । इक्ष्वाकोर्मनुपुत्रस्य कलापोपवने पुरा
It is also heard, O king, that the ancestors sang a verse in the grove of Kalāpa, in ancient times, to Ikṣvāku, the son of Manu.
अपि नस्ते भविष्यन्ति कुले सन्मार्गशीलिनः । गयामुपेत्य ये पिण्डान् दास्यन्त्यस्माकमादरात्
May there be, in our lineage, those of virtuous conduct, who, coming to Gayā, will offer us the rice balls with reverence.
अपि नः स कुले जायाद्यो नो दद्यात् त्रयोदशीम् । पायसं मधुसर्पिर्भ्यां वर्षासु च मघासु च
May one be born in our lineage who will give us the thirteenth offering of rice cooked with milk, honey, and ghee, during the rainy season and under the Maghā star.
गौरीं वाप्युद्वहेत् कन्यां नीलं वा वृषमुत्सृजेत् । यजेत वाश्वमेधेन विधिवद्दक्षिणावता
Or may he marry a fair maiden, or release a dark bull, or perform the horse sacrifice with proper gifts, according to the prescribed rules.
श्रीपराशर उवाच अतः परं ययातेः प्रथमपुत्रस्य यदोर्वंशमहं कथयामि ॥ ४,११.१ ४,११.२ ४,११.३ ४,११.४ ४,११.५ ४,११.६ ४,११.७ ४,११.८ ४,११.९ ४,११.१० ४,११.११ ४,११.१२ ४,११.१३ ४,११.१४ ४,११.१५ ४,११.१६ ४,११.१७ ४,११.१८ ४,११.१९ ४,११.२० ४,११.२१ ॥ जयध्वजात्तालजङ्घः पुत्रोभवत्
Śrī Parāśara said: Now I will recount the lineage of Yadu, the eldest son of Yayāti. Jayadhvaja's son was Tāla-jaṅgha.
श्रीपराशर उवाच ययातेश्चातुर्थपुत्रस्यानोःसभानलचक्षुः परमेषुसंज्ञास्त्रयः पुत्रा बभूवुः ॥ ४,१८.१ ॥ सभानलपुत्रः कालानलः
Śrī Parāśara said: Of Anu, the fourth son of Yayāti, three sons were born—Sabhānala, Cakṣu, and Parameṣus. Sabhānala's son was Kālānala.
श्रीमैत्रेय उवाच । ब्रह्मानारायणाख्योऽसौ कल्पादौ भगवान्यथा । ससर्ज सर्वभूतानि तदाचक्ष्व महामुने
Śrī Maitreya said: At the beginning of the kalpa, the blessed one called Brahmā-Nārāyaṇa created all beings; tell me of this, O great sage.
