विश्वं भवान् सृजति सूर्य्यगभस्तिरूपोविश्वञ्च ते गुणमयोऽयमज! प्रपञ्चः । रूपं परं सदितिवाचकमक्षरं यजज्ञानात्मने सदसते प्रणातोऽस्मि तस्मै ।। ५-१८-
You create the universe, having the form of the sun's rays; and this entire world, O unborn one, is pervaded by your qualities. That supreme form, called imperishable, is declared to be existence; I bow to that, the soul of knowledge, the real and the unreal.
अँनमो वासुदेवाय नमः सङ्कर्षणाय ते । प्रद्यु म्राय नमस्तुभ्यमनिरुद्धाय ते नमः ।। ५-१८-
Salutations to Vāsudeva, salutations to Sankarṣaṇa, salutations to Pradyumna, and salutations to Aniruddha.
एवमन्तर्जले विष्णुमभिष्टूय स यादवः । अर्ज्जयामास सर्व्वेशं पुष्पैर्धूपैर्मनोरमैः ।। ५-१९-
Thus, in the water, that Yadava praised Vishnu and worshipped the Lord of all with delightful flowers and incense.
परित्यक्तान्यविषयो मनस्तत्र निवेश्य सः । ब्रह्मभूते चिरं स्थित्वा विरराम समाधितः ।। ५-१९-
Withdrawing his mind from all other objects and fixing it there, he remained for a long time absorbed in the state of Brahman, and then ceased from his meditation.
कृतकृत्यमिवात्मानं मन्यमानो महामतिः । आजगाम रथं भूयो निगम्य यमुनाम्भसः ।। ५-१९-
Thinking himself to have accomplished his purpose, that wise one again approached the chariot after emerging from the Yamuna's waters.
राम-कृष्णौ च ददृशे यथापूर्व्वं रथे स्थितौ । विस्मिताक्षस्तदाक्रू रस्तञ्च कृष्णोऽभ्यभाषत ।। ५-१९-
He saw Rama and Krishna standing on the chariot just as before; then Akrura, his eyes wide with wonder, was addressed by Krishna.
नूनं ते दृष्टमाश्वर्य्यमक्रूर!यमुनाजले । विस्मयोतूफूल्लनयनो भवान् संलक्ष्यते यतः ।। ५-१९-
"Surely, Akrura, you have seen something marvelous in the waters of the Yamuna, for your eyes are wide with astonishment."
अन्तर्जले यदाश्वर्य्यं दृष्टं तत्र मयाच्युत! तदत्रापि हि पश्यामि मूत्तिंमत् पुरतः स्थितम् ।। ५-१९-
"O Achyuta, whatever wonder I saw in the water, I see that very form standing here before me as well."
जगदेतन्महाश्वर्य्य रूपं यस्य महात्मनः । तेनाश्वर्य्यवरेणाहं भवता कृष्ण!सङ्गतः ।। ५-१९-
"By your supreme power, Krishna, I have been united with you, whose wondrous form is the very essence of the universe."
तत् किमेतेन मथुरां व्रजामो मधुसूदन! बिभेमि कंसाद्धिग् जन्म परपिण्डोपजीविनाम् ।। ५-१९-
"Then what is the use of this? Shall we go to Mathura, O Madhusudana? I fear Kamsa—alas for the fate of those who live off others!"
इत्युक्त्वा चोदयामास तान् हयान् वातरंहसः । सम्प्राप्तश्वातिसायाह्र सोऽक्रूरो मथुरां पुरीम् ।। ५-१९-
Having spoken thus, he urged those swift horses onward, and Akrura reached the city of Mathura as evening approached.
विलोक्य मथुरां कृष्णं रामञ्चाह स यादवः । पद्भयां यातं महावीर्य्यो रथेनैको विशाम्यहम् ।। ५-१९-
Seeing Mathura, that Yadava said to Krishna and Rama, "With great strength, I have brought you here alone by chariot."
गन्तव्यं वसुदेवस्य भवद्भयां न तथा गृहम् । युवयोर्हि कृते वृद्धः स कंसेन निरस्यते ।। ५-१९-
"It is proper for you to go to Vasudeva's house, not mine, for on your account that elder has been cast out by Kamsa."
इत्युत्तवा प्रविवेशाथ सोऽकूरो मथुरां पुरीम् । प्रिवष्टौ रामकृष्णौ, च राजमार्गमुपागतौ ।। ५-१९-
Having said this, Akrura entered the city of Mathura, while Rama and Krishna proceeded along the royal road.
स्त्रीभिर्नरैश्व सानन्दं लोचनैरभिवीक्षितौ । जग्मतुलीलया वीरौ दृफ्तौ बालगजाविव ।। ५-१९-
The two heroes, strong as young elephants, were joyfully gazed upon by women and men as they walked with playful ease.
भ्रममाणौ तु तौ दृष्ट्वा रजकं रङ्गकारकम् । अयाचेतां सुरूपाणि वासांसि रुचिराननौ ।। ५-१९-
As they wandered, the two, with radiant faces, saw a washerman and a dyer and asked them for beautiful garments.
कंसस्य रजकः सोऽथ प्रसादारूढ़विस्मयः । बहून्याक्षेपवाक्यानि प्राहोच्चै राम-केशवौ ।। ५-१९-
That washerman of Kamsa, filled with astonishment and pride, spoke many harsh words loudly to Rama and Kesava.
ततस्तलप्रहारेण कृष्णस्तस्य दुरात्मनः । पातयामास कापेन रजकस्य शिरो भुवि ।। ५-१९-
Then Krishna, with a blow of his palm, struck down that wicked man's head to the ground.
हत्वादाय च वस्त्राणि पीतनीलाम्बरौ ततः । कृष्ण-रामौ मुदा युक्तौ मालाकारगृहं गतौ ।। ५-१९-
After slaying him, Krishna and Rama, clad in yellow and blue garments, joyfully went to the house of the garland-maker.
विकाशिनेत्रयुगलौ मालाकारोऽतिविस्मितः । एतौ कस्य कुतो वैतौ मैत्रेयाचिन्तयत् तदा ।। ५-१९-
The garland-maker, his eyes wide with amazement, wondered, 'Who are these two? Where have they come from?'
पीतनीलाम्बरधरौ तौ दृष्ट्वातिमनोहरौ । स तर्कयामास तदा भुवं देवावुपागतौ ।। ५-१९-
Seeing those two, wearing yellow and dark-blue garments and exceedingly charming, he thought at that moment that these must be gods who have descended to earth.
विकाशिमुखपद्माभ्यां ताभ्यां पुष्पाणि याचितः । भुवं विष्टभ्य हस्ताभ्यां पस्पर्श शिरसा महीम् ।। ५-१९-
Requested by those two, whose faces bloomed like lotuses, for flowers, he touched the earth with his head, supporting himself with his hands.
प्रसादपरमौ नाथौ मम गेहमुपागतौ । धन्योऽहमर्ज्जयिष्यामीत्याह तौ माल्यजीवकः ।। ५-१९-
He said to those two, 'The gracious lords have come to my house; I am blessed—I shall prosper.' Thus spoke the garland-maker.
ततः प्रह्टश्टवदनस्तयोः पुष्पाणि कामतः । चारूण्येतान्यथैतानि प्रददौ स विलोभयन ।। ५-१९-
Then, with a delighted face, he freely gave them flowers—these beautiful ones and others as well—offering them with joy.
पुनः पुनः प्रणम्यासौ मालाकारौ नरोत्तमौ । ददौ पुष्पाणि चारूणि गन्धवन्त्यमलानि च ।। ५-१९-
Again and again, bowing to those best of men, the garland-maker gave them beautiful, fragrant, and spotless flowers.
मालाकाराय कृष्णोऽपि प्रसन्नः प्रददौ वरान । श्रीस्त्वां मतूसंश्रया भद्र! न कदाचित् प्रहास्तयि ।। ५-१९-
Pleased, Krishna also granted boons to the garland-maker: 'May fortune, O blessed one, never leave you as long as you remain devoted to me.'
बलहानिर्न ते सौम्य! धनहानिस्थथैव च । यावद्दिनानि तावज्व न नशिष्यति सन्ततिः ।। ५-१९-
'There will be no loss of strength for you, gentle one, nor any loss of wealth; and for as many days as you live, your lineage will not perish.'
बुक्त्वा च विपुलान् भोगांस्तमन्ते मतूप्रसादजम् । ममानुस्मरणां प्राप्य दिव्यं लोकमवाप्स्यसि ।। ५-१९-
'After enjoying great pleasures, at the end, by my grace, you will attain remembrance of me and reach the divine world.'
धर्म्मे मनश्व ते भद्र!सर्व्वकालं भविष्यति । युष्मत्सन्ततिजातानां दीर्घमायुर्भविष्यति ।। ५-१९-
'Let your mind be set on righteousness, O blessed one! At all times, your descendants will have long life.'
नोपसर्गादिकं दोषं युष्मत्सन्ततिसम्भवः । सम्प्राप्स्यति महाभाग!यावत् सूर्य्यो धरिष्यति ।। ५-१९-
'No affliction or fault will befall those born in your lineage, O greatly fortunate one, for as long as the sun endures.'
