चारयंतं महावीर्यं गास्तु गोपवपुर्धरम् । कृत्स्नस्य जगतो गोपं वृतं गोपकुमारकैः
He saw Krishna, of great might, tending the cows in the form of a cowherd, the protector of the whole world, surrounded by cowherd boys.
गरुडं च ददर्शोच्चैरंतर्द्धानगतं द्विज । कृतच्छायं हरेर्मूर्ध्नि पक्षाभ्यां पक्षिपुंगवम्
He also saw Garuḍa, the king of birds, high above, concealed by his own power, shading the head of Hari with his wings.
अवरुह्य स नागेंद्रा देकांते मधुसूदनम् । शक्रस्सस्मितमाहेदं प्रीतिविस्तारितेक्षणः
Dismounting from the lord of serpents at a distance, Indra, his eyes wide with joy and smiling, addressed Madhusudana.
इंद्र उवाच। कृष्णकृष्ण शृणुष्वेदं यदर्थ महामागतः । त्वत्समीपं महाबाहो नैतच्चिंत्यं त्वयाऽन्यथा
Indra said: Krishna, Krishna, listen to this for which I have come here; mighty-armed one, do not think otherwise about this.
भारावतारणार्थाय पृथिव्याः पृथिवीतले । अवतीर्णोऽखिलाधार त्वमेव परमेश्वर
You alone, supreme lord, have descended to earth for the relief of the burden of the world, O sustainer of all.
मखभंगविरोधेन मया गोकुलनाशकाः । समादिष्टा महामेघास्तैश्चेदं कदनं कृतम्
Because of opposition to the sacrifice, I ordered the great clouds to destroy Gokula; by them, this devastation was wrought.
त्रातास्ताश्च त्वया गावस्समुत्पाट्य महीधरम् । तेनाऽहं तोषितो वीरकर्मणाऽत्यद्भुतेन ते
But you protected the cows by lifting the mountain; therefore, I am satisfied by your heroic and most wondrous deed.
साधितं कृष्ण देवानामहं मन्ये प्रयोजनम् । त्वयायमद्रि प्रवरः करेणैकेन यद्धृतः
I believe, Krishna, that the purpose of the gods has been accomplished, since you held this foremost mountain with a single hand.
गोभिश्च चोदितः कृष्ण त्वत्सकाशमिहागतः । त्वया त्राताभिरत्यर्थं युष्मत्सत्कारकारणात्
Prompted by the cows, O Krishna, I have come here to you; you have been greatly protected by you, for the sake of honoring you.
स त्वां कृष्णाभिषेक्ष्यामि गवां वाक्यप्रचोदितः । उपेंद्र त्वे गवामिंद्रो गोविंदस्त्वं भविष्यसि
Therefore, O Krishna, urged by the words of the cows, I shall anoint you; O Upendra, you will become Govinda, the lord of cows.
श्रीपराशर उवाच। अथोपवाह्यादादाय घंटामैरावताद्गजात् । अभिषेकं तया चक्रे पवित्रजलपूर्णया
Śrī Parāśara said: Then, taking a golden vessel from the elephant Airavata, he performed the anointing with it, filled with pure water.
क्रियमाणेऽभिषेके तु गावः कृष्णस्य तत्क्षणात् । प्रस्नवोद्भूतदुग्धाद्रा रं! सद्यश्चक्रुर्वसुन्धराम्
As the anointing was being performed, at that very moment, the cows poured forth streams of milk upon the earth.
अभिषिच्य गवां वाक्यादुपेंद्रं वै जनार्दनम् । प्रीत्या सप्रश्रयं वाक्यं पुनराह शचीपतिः
Having anointed Upendra Janārdana at the request of the cows, Indra, with affection and humility, again spoke these words.
गवामेतत्कृतं वाक्यं तथान्यदपि मे शृणु । यद्ब्रवीमि महाभाग भारावतरणेच्छया
This request of the cows has been fulfilled; now hear another matter from me, O greatly fortunate one, which I say out of desire to relieve the earth's burden.
ममंशः पुरुषव्याघ्र पृथिव्यां पृथिवीधर । अवतीर्णोऽर्जुनोनाम संरक्ष्यो भवता सदा
A portion of me, O tiger among men, sustainer of the earth, has descended to earth as Arjuna; he must always be protected by you.
भारावतरणे साह्यं स ते वीरः करिष्यति । संरक्षणीयो भवता यथात्मा मधुसूदन
That hero will assist you in relieving the earth's burden; he is to be protected by you, O Madhusudana, as you would protect yourself.
श्रीभगवानुवाच। जानामि भारते वंशो! जातं पार्थं तवांशतः । तमहं पालयिष्यामि यावत्स्थास्यामि भूतले
The Blessed Lord said: I know, O descendant of Bharata, that Partha, born from your portion, has appeared; I shall protect him as long as I remain on earth.
यावन्महीतले शक्र स्थास्याम्यहमरिंदम । न तावदर्जुनं कश्चिद्देवेंद्र युधि जेष्यति
As long as I, O Indra, remain on the earth, no one will defeat Arjuna in battle, O subduer of foes.
कंसो नाम महाबाहुर्दैत्योऽरिष्टस्तथाऽसुरः । केशी कुवलयापीडो नरकाद्यास्तथा परे
Kamsa, the mighty-armed demon, and the asura Ariṣṭa, as well as Keśī, Kuvalayāpīḍa, Naraka, and others—
हतेषु तेषु देवेंद्र भविष्यति महाहवः । तत्र विद्धि सहस्राक्ष भारावतरणं कृतम्
When these are slain, O Indra, there will be a great battle; know, O thousand-eyed one, that the burden of the earth will then be lifted.
स त्वं गच्छ न संतापं पुत्रार्थे कर्त्तुमर्हसि । नार्जुनस्य रिपुः कश्चिन्ममाग्रे प्रभविष्यति
So you may go; you should not grieve for your son, for no enemy of Arjuna will prevail against him in my presence.
अर्जुनार्थे त्वहं सर्वान्युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमान् । निवृत्ते भारते युद्धे कुंत्यै दास्याम्यविक्षताम्
For Arjuna's sake, I shall return all the sons, led by Yudhishthira, unharmed to Kunti when the war in Bharata is over.
श्रीपराशर उवाच। इत्युक्तः संपरिष्वज्य देवाराजो जनार्दनम् । आरुह्यैरावतं नागं पुनरेव दिवं ययौ
Śrī Parāśara said: Thus addressed, the king of the gods embraced Janārdana, mounted the elephant Airavata, and returned again to heaven.
कृष्णो हि सहितो गोभिर्गोपालैश्च पुनर्व्रजम् । आजगामाऽथ गोपीनां दृष्टिपूतेन वर्त्मना
Krishna, together with the cows and cowherds, returned again to Vraja, by the path purified by the glances of the gopīs.
गते शक्र तु गोपालाः कृष्णमक्लिष्टकारिणम् । ऊचुः प्रीत्या धृतं दृष्ट्वा तेन गोवर्द्धनाचलम् ।। ५-१३-
When Indra had departed, the cowherds, seeing that Krishna, the doer of flawless deeds, had held up Govardhana mountain, spoke to him with affection.
वयमस्मान्महाबाहो! भवता महतो भयात् । गावश्व भवता त्राता गिरिधारणकर्म्मणा ।। ५-१३-
We, O mighty-armed one, and the cows as well, have been protected by you from great danger, by your act of holding up the mountain.
बालीक्रीड़ेयमतुला गोपालत्वं जुगुप्सितम् । दिव्यञ्च कर्म्म भवतः किमेतत् तात!कथ्यताम् ।। ५-१३-
This childish play and the state of being a cowherd are unworthy; your actions are divine—what is the meaning of this, dear one? Please tell us.
कालियो दमितस्तोये प्रलम्बो विनिपातितः । धृतो गोवर्द्धनश्वायं शङ्कितानि मनांसि नः ।। ५-१३-
You subdued Kāliya in the water, you struck down Pralamba, you held up Govardhana—these deeds have made our minds uneasy.
सत्यं सत्यं हरेः पादौ शापामीऽमितविक्रम । यथा त्वद्रीर्य्यमालोक्य न त्वां मन्यामहे नरम् ।। ५-१३-
Truly, truly, O Hari of immeasurable might, seeing these acts of yours, we do not consider you a mere human.
प्रीतिः सस्त्रीकुमारस्य व्रजस्य तव केशव! कर्म्म चेदमशक्यं यत् समस्तैस्त्रिदशैरपि ।। ५-१३-
O Keśava, the love of the women and children of Vraja is with you! Yet these deeds of yours are impossible even for all the gods together.
