Whenever Yashoda saw those two boys playing together in one place, she was unable to keep them in check, so restless were they in their play.
Yashoda, taking a stick in anger, approached Krishna, whose eyes were like lotus petals, and scolded him in wrath.
'If you are able, go on with your restless mischief!' she said, and then the housewife returned to her own tasks.
Then, while she was busy, he, dragging the mortar, went between the twin arjuna trees, O lotus-eyed one.
As he dragged the mortar sideways between the two trees, the high branches were broken, and thus the twin arjuna trees fell.
Then, hearing the loud crashing sound, the people of Vraja, alarmed, came and saw the great trees fallen.
The two branches of the arjuna trees fell to the ground, and the child, with newly erupted small teeth and a bright smile, was between them.
Bound between them, with a rope tied around his waist, he thus became known as Damodara because of the rope binding.
Then all the elder cowherds, led by Nanda, began to discuss, greatly alarmed by the terrible omen.
There is nothing for us to do here; let us go to another great forest, for many calamities are seen here, causing destruction.
The death of Putana, the overturning of the cart, and the falling of the arjuna trees—all occurred without any fault of wind or other causes.
Having thus resolved to depart, all the inhabitants of Vraja said to their own families, 'Let us go quickly, do not delay.'
Then, within a moment, the inhabitants of Vraja set out with their carts and cattle, moving in groups, driving their calves and children.
In just a moment, their place in Vraja was emptied of possessions and people, and was filled with crows and crow-wives, O twice-born one.
Vrindavana was contemplated by Krishna, whose actions are effortless, with a pure mind, desiring the growth of the cows.
Then, O best of the twice-born, even in the harsh summer, fresh crops sprang up everywhere as if it were the rainy season.
Thus, all of Vraja settled in Vrindavana, with their carts and cattle, arranged in semicircular formations.

Then Rama and Damodara became cowherd boys, and together in the pasture, they wandered, engaged in childish play.
Wearing crowns made of peacock feathers and garlands of wild flowers, playing flutes and leaf instruments, they produced melodious sounds.
The two boys, bearing hair like crow's wings, resembling young sons of fire, laughed and played as they wandered, mighty in strength.
As time passed, those two, in the great Vraja, reached seven years of age and became cowherds, protectors of the whole world.

Then the rainy season arrived, with the sky covered by masses of clouds, and streams of water united as if joining the directions.
The earth, adorned with new, flourishing crops and filled with Indra's insects, appeared like emerald, decorated with ruby.
The wandering rivers, with deep waters everywhere, seemed to have attained new beauty, like the minds of the ill-mannered upon gaining wealth.
Indra, whose horses are not obstructed, did not shine forth, pure, amidst the sullied clouds, just as the words of fools, full of excessive boldness, do not shine in the presence of those skilled in debate.
Even with a powerful bow, the path of Indra in the sky could not be attained, just as a king lacking discernment cannot properly acquire possessions.
Upon the back of the clouds, the pure line of cranes shone, just as the conduct of a noble person stands out amidst the actions of the wicked.
The lightning, extremely fickle, did not bind stability in the sky, just as friendship, when offered to a noble man by a wicked person, does not endure.
The paths became unclear, covered by heaps of new grain, just as the words of people, having acquired a different meaning, become obscure.
At times, together with the cowherds, both delighted in singing and dancing; at other times, they sought shelter under trees, greatly chilled.
