सप्तमे रोहिणी प्राप्ते गर्भेगर्भं ततो हरिः । लोकत्रयोपकाराय देवक्याः प्रविवेश वै ।। ५-२-
When the seventh month under Rohini arrived, Hari entered the womb of Devaki for the benefit of the three worlds.
योगनिद्रा यशोदायास्तस्मिन्नेव ततो दिने । सम्भूता जठरे तदूदू यथोक्तं परमेष्ठिना ।। ५-२-
On that very day, as declared by the supreme Lord, Yogamaya entered the womb of Yashoda.
ततो ग्रहगणाः सम्यक् प्रचचार दिवि द्रिज । विष्णोरंशे बुवं याते ऋतवश्वाभवन् शुभाः ।। ५-२-
Then, O twice-born, the planets moved harmoniously in the sky; when Vishnu's portion descended to earth, the seasons became auspicious.
न सेहे देवकी द्रष्टुं कश्विदप्यतितेजसा । जाज्वल्यमानां तां दृष्ट्वा मनांसि क्षोभमाययुः ।। ५-२-
No one could bear to look at Devaki, so radiant with extraordinary brilliance; seeing her shining, their minds were disturbed.
अदृष्टां पुरुषैः स्त्रीभिर्देवकीं देवतागणाः । विभ्राणां वपुषा विष्णुं तुष्टु वुस्तामहर्निशम् ।। ५-२-
The hosts of gods, unseen by men and women, continuously praised Devaki, who bore Vishnu's form.
प्रकृतिस्त्व परा सुक्ष्मा ब्रह्मगर्भाभवः पुरा । ततो वाणी जगद्धातुर्व्वेदगर्भासि शोभने ।। ५-२-
You are the supreme, subtle nature, the origin of Brahma's womb; then, O beautiful one, you became the speech of the world's creator, the womb of the Vedas.
सूर्य्यस्वरूपगर्भासि सृष्टिभूता सनातनि । बीजभूता तु सर्व्वस्य यज्ञभूताभवस्त्रयी ।। ५-२-
You are the womb of the sun's form, the eternal source of creation; you are the seed of all, and the essence of sacrifice, the triple Veda.
फलगर्भा त्वमेवेज्या वह्निगर्भा तथारणिः । अदितिर्देवगर्भा त्वं दैत्यगर्भा तथा दितिः ।। ५-२-
You are the womb of fruit, the object of worship; you are the womb of fire and the arani; you are Aditi, the womb of the gods, and Diti, the womb of the demons.
ज्योतूस्त्रा वासरगर्भा त्वं ज्ञानगर्भासि सन्नतिः । नयगर्भा परा नीतिर्लज्जा त्वं प्रश्रयोदूहा ।। ५-२-
You are the womb of light, the womb of day; you are the womb of knowledge, humility; you are the womb of guidance, supreme conduct; you are modesty and the womb of respect.
कामगर्भा तथेच्छा त्वं तुष्टिः सन्तोषगर्भिणी । मेधा च भोधगर्भासि धैर्य्यगर्भोदूहा धृतिः ।। ५-२-
You are the womb of desire and will, satisfaction, and contentment; you are intelligence, the womb of wisdom, and fortitude, the womb of courage.
ग्रहर्क्षतारकागर्भा द्यौरस्य खिलहैतुकी । एता विभूतयो देवि । तथान्याश्व सहस्त्रशः ।। ५-२-
You are the womb of planets, stars, and constellations; the sky is your vast support. These are your powers, O goddess, and likewise thousands of others.
तथासङ्खया जगद्धात्रि । साम्प्रतं जठरे तव । समुद्राद्रि-द्रीप-वन-पत्तनभूषणा ।। ५-२-
Thus, O sustainer of the world, countless adornments—oceans, mountains, islands, forests, and cities—are presently within your womb.
ग्राम-खर्व्वट-खैटाढया समस्ता पृथिवी शुभे । समस्तवह्नयोऽम्भांसि सकलाश्व समीरणाः ।। ५-२-
All villages, hamlets, and settlements, O auspicious one, the entire earth; all fires, waters, and every wind are within you.
ग्रहर्क्षतारकाचित्रं विमानशतसङूकुलम् । अवकाशमशेषस्य यदूददातिनभःस्थलम् ।। ५-२-
The sky, filled with the wonders of planets, stars, and hundreds of flying vehicles, provides space for all that exists.
भूर्लोकश्व भुवर्लोकः स्वर्लोकोऽथ महर्ज्जनः । तपश्व ब्रह्मलोकश्व ब्रह्माण्डमखिलं शुभे ।। ५-२-
The earth realm, the atmosphere, the heaven, and also the worlds of Mahar, Jana, Tapas, and Brahma, O auspicious one, the entire universe.
तदन्तरे स्थिता देवा दैत्य-गन्धर्व्व-चारणाः । महोरगास्तथ यक्षा राक्षसाः प्रेतगुह्यकाः ।। ५-२-
Within it reside the gods, demons, gandharvas, charanas, great serpents, yakshas, rakshasas, spirits, and hidden beings.
मनुष्याः पशवश्वान्ये ये ज जीवा यशस्विनि । तैरन्तः स्थैरनन्तोऽसौ सर्वेशः सर्व्वभावनः ।। ५-२-
O illustrious one, all humans, animals, and other living beings—by them, within and without, dwells the infinite, the lord of all, the creator of all existence.
रूपकर्म्मखरूपाणि न परिच्छेदगोचरे । यस्याखिलप्रमाणानि सि विष्णुर्गर्भगस्तव ।। ५-२-
He whose forms and actions are beyond the reach of definition, whose measures are all things—he, O Vishnu, resides within your womb.
त्वं खाहा त्वं स्वधा विद्या सुधा त्वं ज्योतिरम्बरे । त्वं स्वाहा त्वं स्वधा विद्या सुधा त्वं ज्योतिरम्बरे । त्वं सर्व्वलोकरक्षार्थमवतीर्णा महीतले ।। ५-२-
You are the ether, you are svadhā, knowledge, nectar, you are the light in the sky; you are svāhā, svadhā, knowledge, nectar, you are the light in the sky; you have descended to earth for the protection of all worlds.
प्रसीद देवि । सर्व्वस्य जगतः शं शुभे । कुरु । प्रीत्या त्वं धारयेशानं धृतं येनाखिलं जगत् ।। ५-२-
Be gracious, O goddess. Bring auspiciousness and peace to all the world. With affection, you sustain the lord, by whom the entire universe is upheld.
एवं संस्तूयमाना सा देवैर्दैवमधारयत् । गर्भेण पुण्डरीकाक्षं जगतस्त्राणकारणम् ।। ५-३-
Thus praised by the gods, she bore within her womb the lotus-eyed one, the cause of the world's protection.
ततोऽखिलजगत्पद्मबोधायाच्युतभान्ना । देवकीपूर्व्वसन्ध्यायामाविर्भूतं महात्मना ।। ५-३-
Then, for the awakening of the entire world, in the early dawn before Devakī, the great soul, Acyuta, appeared.
तज्जन्मदिनमत्यर्थमाह्लाद्यमलदिङूमुखम् । बभूव सर्वलोकस्य कौमुदी शशिनो यथा ।। ५-३-
The day of his birth brought extraordinary joy and delight to all directions, as moonlight brings happiness to the world.
सन्तः सन्तोषमधिकं प्रशमं चण्डमारुतः । प्रसादं निम्रगा याता जायमाने जनार्दृने ।। ५-३-
The virtuous felt greater contentment; the fierce winds calmed; the wild animals became gentle when Janārdana was born.
सिन्धवो निजशब्देन वाद्य चक्त र्मनोहरम् । जगुर्गन्धर्व्वपतयो ननृतुश्वाप्सरोगणाः ।। ५-३-
The rivers played their own melodious sounds; the Gandharva lords sang, and the groups of Apsarases danced.
ससृजुः पुष्पवर्षाणि देवा भुव्यन्तरीक्षगाः । जज्वलुश्वाग्रयः शान्ता जायमाने जनार्द्दने ।। ५-३-
The gods in the sky and on earth showered flowers; peaceful fires blazed brightly as Janārdana was born.
मध्यरात्रेऽखिलाधारे जायमाने जनार्दने । मन्द्र जगर्ज्जुर्जलदाः पूष्पचवृष्टिचो द्रिच ।। ५-३-
At midnight, when Janārdana, the support of all, was born, the clouds thundered gently and rained flowers.
फुल्लेन्दीवरपत्राभं चतुर्बीहुमुदीक्ष्य तम् । श्रीवत्सवक्षसं जातं तुष्टावानकदुन्दुभिः ।। ५-३-
Seeing him, radiant as a blossoming blue lotus petal, with four arms and the mark of Śrīvatsa on his chest, Vasudeva praised him.
अभिष्टूय च तं वागभिः प्रसन्नप्तभिर्महामतिः । विज्ञापयामास तदा कंसाद्भीतो द्रिजोत्तम ।। ५-३-
Having worshipped him with words and a delighted mind, the wise Vasudeva, fearful of Kamsa, then addressed him, O best of twice-born.
ज्ञातोऽसि देवदेवेश । शचङ्ख-चक्र-गदाधर । दिव्यरूपमिदं देव प्रसादेनोपसंहर ।। ५-३-
You are known, O lord of gods, bearer of conch, discus, and mace. Withdraw this divine form, O god, by your grace.
