कंसोऽपि तदुपश्रुत्य नारदात्कुपितस्ततः । देवकीं वसुदेवं च गृहे गुप्तावधारयत् ॥ ५,१.
Kamsa, having heard this from Narada, became enraged and then kept Devaki and Vasudeva confined and guarded in his house.
वसुदेवेन कंसाय तेनैवोक्तं यथा पुरा । तथैव वसुदेवोऽपि पुत्रमर्पितवान् द्विज ॥ ५,१.
Just as Vasudeva had previously told Kamsa, so too did Vasudeva now, O Brahmin, hand over his son.
हिरण्यकशिपोः पुत्राःषड्गर्भा इति विश्रुताः । विष्णुप्रयुक्ता स्तान्निद्राक्रमाद्गर्भानयोजयत् ॥ ५,१.
The six sons, known as the offspring of Hiranyakashipu, were, by the will of Vishnu, drawn into Devaki's womb through the power of sleep.
योगनिद्रा महामाया वैष्णवी मोहितं यया । अविद्यया जगत्सर्वं तामाह भगवान्हरिः ॥ ५,१.
Yoganidra, the great illusion belonging to Vishnu, by whom the world is deluded through ignorance, was addressed by the blessed Hari.
श्रीभगवानुवाच निद्रे गच्छ ममादेशात्पातालातलसंश्रयान् । एकैकत्वेन षड्गर्भान्देवकीजठरं नय ॥ ५,१.
The Blessed Lord said: O Sleep, by my command, go to the lower realms and, one by one, transfer the six sons into Devaki's womb.
हतेषु तेषु कंसेन शेषाख्योंशस्ततो मम । अंशांशोनादरे तस्याःसप्तमः संभविष्यति ॥ ५,१.
After those six are slain by Kamsa, then a portion of mine, called Shesha, will become the seventh in her womb, as a partial manifestation.
गोकुले वसुदेवस्य भार्यान्या रोहिणी स्थिता । तस्याःस संभूतिसमं देवि नेयस्त्वयोदरम् ॥ ५,१.
In Gokula, Vasudeva's other wife Rohini resides; the embryo from Devaki should be transferred by you, O goddess, into her womb at the same time.
सप्तमो भोजरा जस्य भयाद्रोधोपरोधतः । देवक्याः पितितो गर्भ इति लोको वदिष्यति ॥ ५,१.
Because of the fear and oppression of the Bhoja king, people will say that Devaki's seventh child was miscarried.
गर्भसंकर्षणात्सोऽथ लोके संकर्षणेति वै । संज्ञामवाप्स्यते वीरः श्वेताद्रिशिखरोपमः ॥ ५,१.
Because of the transfer of the embryo, that hero, shining like the peak of the white mountain, will be known in the world as Sankarshana.
ततोऽहं संभविष्यामि देवकीजठरे शुभे । भर्गं त्वया यशोदाया गन्तव्यमविलंबितम् ॥ ५,१.
Then I shall be born in the auspicious womb of Devaki; but you must quickly go to Yashoda, carrying my brilliance.
प्रावृट्काले च नभसि कृष्णाष्टम्यामहं निशि । उत्पत्स्यामि नवम्यां तु प्रसूतिं त्वमवाप्स्यसि ॥ ५,१.
In the rainy season, on the eighth night of the dark fortnight, I will be born at night; but you will give birth on the ninth day.
यशोदाशयने मां तु देवक्यास्त्वामनिन्दिते । मच्छक्तिप्रोरितमतिर्वसुदेवो नयिष्यति ॥ ५,१.
On Yashoda's bed, I will be placed, and you, O faultless one, will be placed by Devaki; Vasudeva, his mind impelled by my power, will carry this out.
कंसश्च त्वामुपादाय देवि शैलशिलातले । प्रक्षेप्स्यत्यन्तारिक्षे च संस्थानं त्वमवाप्स्यसि ॥ ५,१.
Kamsa, taking you, O goddess, will throw you upon the rocky summit of a mountain, and you will attain your own divine form.
ततस्त्वां शतदृक्छक्रः प्रणम्य मम गौरवात् । प्रणिपातानतशिरा भगिनीत्वे ग्रहीष्यति ॥ ५,१.
Then the thousand-eyed wielder of the discus, out of respect for me, will bow his head to you and accept you as his sister.
त्वं च शुंभनिशुंभादीन्हत्वा दैत्यान्सहस्रशः । स्थानैरनेकैः पृथिवीमशेषां मण्डयिष्यसि ॥ ५,१.
You will slay thousands of demons such as Shumbha and Nishumbha, and you will adorn the entire earth with many abodes.
त्वं भूतिः सन्नतिः क्षान्तिः कान्तिर्द्यौः पृथिवी धृतिः । लज्जापुष्टी रुषा या तु काचिदन्या त्वमेव सा ॥ ५,१.
You are prosperity, humility, forbearance, beauty, the sky, the earth, steadfastness, modesty, nourishment, and even wrath—whatever else there is, you are that as well.
ये त्वामार्येति दुर्गेति वेदगर्भांबिकेति च । भद्रेति भद्रकालीति क्षेमदा भग्यदेति च ॥ ५,१.
Those who call you Arya, Durga, Vedagarbha, Ambika, Bhadra, Bhadrakali, Kshema-da, or Bhagya-da—
प्रातश्चैवापराह्ने च स्तोष्यन्त्यानम्रमूर्तयः । तेषां हि प्रार्थितं सर्वं मत्प्रसादाद्भविष्यति ॥ ५,१.
—morning and afternoon, these devoted ones will praise you with bowed forms; whatever they desire will be granted to them by my favor.
सुरामांसोपहरैश्च भक्ष्यभोज्यैश्च पूजिता । नॄणामशेषसामांस्त्वं प्रसन्ना संप्रदास्यसि ॥ ५,१.
When honored with offerings of liquor, meat, and various foods both to be eaten and enjoyed, you will graciously grant all the wishes of people without exception.
यथोक्तं सा जगद्धात्री देवदेवेन वै तदा । षड़गर्भ-गर्भविन्यासं चक्र चान्यस्य कर्षणम् ।। ५-२-
Then, as spoken by the Lord of gods, she who sustains the world arranged the transfer of the embryo and the extraction of another.
सप्तमे रोहिणी प्राप्ते गर्भेगर्भं ततो हरिः । लोकत्रयोपकाराय देवक्याः प्रविवेश वै ।। ५-२-
When the seventh month under Rohini arrived, Hari entered the womb of Devaki for the benefit of the three worlds.
योगनिद्रा यशोदायास्तस्मिन्नेव ततो दिने । सम्भूता जठरे तदूदू यथोक्तं परमेष्ठिना ।। ५-२-
On that very day, as declared by the supreme Lord, Yogamaya entered the womb of Yashoda.
ततो ग्रहगणाः सम्यक् प्रचचार दिवि द्रिज । विष्णोरंशे बुवं याते ऋतवश्वाभवन् शुभाः ।। ५-२-
Then, O twice-born, the planets moved harmoniously in the sky; when Vishnu's portion descended to earth, the seasons became auspicious.
न सेहे देवकी द्रष्टुं कश्विदप्यतितेजसा । जाज्वल्यमानां तां दृष्ट्वा मनांसि क्षोभमाययुः ।। ५-२-
No one could bear to look at Devaki, so radiant with extraordinary brilliance; seeing her shining, their minds were disturbed.
अदृष्टां पुरुषैः स्त्रीभिर्देवकीं देवतागणाः । विभ्राणां वपुषा विष्णुं तुष्टु वुस्तामहर्निशम् ।। ५-२-
The hosts of gods, unseen by men and women, continuously praised Devaki, who bore Vishnu's form.
प्रकृतिस्त्व परा सुक्ष्मा ब्रह्मगर्भाभवः पुरा । ततो वाणी जगद्धातुर्व्वेदगर्भासि शोभने ।। ५-२-
You are the supreme, subtle nature, the origin of Brahma's womb; then, O beautiful one, you became the speech of the world's creator, the womb of the Vedas.
सूर्य्यस्वरूपगर्भासि सृष्टिभूता सनातनि । बीजभूता तु सर्व्वस्य यज्ञभूताभवस्त्रयी ।। ५-२-
You are the womb of the sun's form, the eternal source of creation; you are the seed of all, and the essence of sacrifice, the triple Veda.
फलगर्भा त्वमेवेज्या वह्निगर्भा तथारणिः । अदितिर्देवगर्भा त्वं दैत्यगर्भा तथा दितिः ।। ५-२-
You are the womb of fruit, the object of worship; you are the womb of fire and the arani; you are Aditi, the womb of the gods, and Diti, the womb of the demons.
ज्योतूस्त्रा वासरगर्भा त्वं ज्ञानगर्भासि सन्नतिः । नयगर्भा परा नीतिर्लज्जा त्वं प्रश्रयोदूहा ।। ५-२-
You are the womb of light, the womb of day; you are the womb of knowledge, humility; you are the womb of guidance, supreme conduct; you are modesty and the womb of respect.
कामगर्भा तथेच्छा त्वं तुष्टिः सन्तोषगर्भिणी । मेधा च भोधगर्भासि धैर्य्यगर्भोदूहा धृतिः ।। ५-२-
You are the womb of desire and will, satisfaction, and contentment; you are intelligence, the womb of wisdom, and fortitude, the womb of courage.
