अन्यूनश्चाप्यवृद्धिश्च स्वाधीनो नादिमान्वशी । क्लमतन्द्री भयक्रोधकामादिभिरसंयुतः ॥ ५,१.
You are neither diminished nor increased, self-dependent, without beginning, sovereign; untouched by fatigue, sloth, fear, anger, desire, and the like.
निरवद्यः परः प्राप्तेर्निरधिष्ठोऽक्षरः क्रमः । सर्वेश्वरः पराधारो धाम्नां धामात्मकोऽक्षयः ॥ ५,१.
Faultless, supreme, beyond attainment, unseated, imperishable order; Lord of all, the supreme support, the essence of all radiance, imperishable.
सकलावरणानीतनिरालंबनभावन । महाविभूतिसंस्थान नमस्ते पुरुषोत्तम ॥ ५,१.
O Supreme Person, whose meditation is free from all coverings and supports, whose abode is great majesty—salutations to you.
नाकारणात्कारणाद्वा कारणाकारणान्न च । शरीरग्रहणं वापि धर्मत्राणाय केवलम् ॥ ५,१.
There is no taking of a body from cause or without cause, nor from cause and non-cause; it is only for the protection of dharma.
श्रीपराशर उवाच इत्येवं संस्तवं श्रुत्वा मनसा भगवानजः । ब्रह्माणमाह प्रीतेन विश्वरूपं प्रकाशयन् ॥ ५,१.
Śrī Parāśara said: Having heard this praise, the unborn Lord, revealing his universal form, spoke to Brahmā with delight in his mind.
श्रीभगवानुवाच भोभो ब्रह्मंस्त्वया मत्तःसह देवैर्यदिष्यते । तदुच्यतामशेषं च सिद्धमेवावधार्यताम् ॥ ५,१.
The Blessed Lord said: O Brahmā, if you and the gods desire anything from me, let it be spoken fully and know that it is already accomplished.
श्रीपराशर उवाच ततो ब्रह्मा हरेर्दिव्य विश्विरूपमवेक्ष्य तत् । तुष्टाव भूयो देवेषु साध्वसावनतात्मसु ॥ ५,१.
Śrī Parāśara said: Then Brahmā, seeing Hari's divine universal form, praised him again among the gods, whose hearts were filled with awe and reverence.
ब्रह्मोवाच नमो नमस्तेस्तु सहस्रकृत्वःसहस्रबाहो बहुवक्त्रपाद । नमोनमस्ते जगतः प्रवृत्तिविनाशसंस्थानकराप्रमेय ॥ ५,१.
Brahmā said: Salutations, salutations to you a thousand times, O thousand-armed, with many faces and feet; salutations to you, immeasurable one, who causes the creation, destruction, and maintenance of the world.
सूक्ष्मातिसूक्ष्मातिबृहत्प्रमाम गरीयसामप्यतिगौरवात्मन् । प्रधानबुद्धीन्द्रियवत्प्रधानमूलात्परात्मन्भगवन्प्रसीद ॥ ५,१.
O Lord, subtle beyond the subtlest, vast beyond measure, heavier than the heaviest, supreme soul beyond the root of matter, intellect, and senses—be gracious.
एषा मही देव महीप्रसूतैर्महासुरैः पीडितशैलबन्धा । परायणं त्वां जगतामुपैति भारावतारार्थमपारसार ॥ ५,१.
O God, this earth, bound by mountains and oppressed by great demons born of the earth, approaches you, the refuge of the worlds, for the removal of its burden, O unfathomable one.
एते वयं वृत्ररिपुस्तथायं नासत्यदस्त्रौ वरुणस्तथैव । इमे च रुद्रा वसवःससूर्याःसमीरणाग्निप्रसुखास्तथान्ये ॥ ५,१.
We are here—Indra, the enemy of Vṛtra, the two Aśvins, Varuṇa, Rudras, Vasus, Sūryas, Vāyu, Agni, and others who bring happiness.
सुराःसमस्ताःसुरनाथकार्यमेभिर्मया यच्च तदीश सर्वाम् । आज्ञापयाज्ञां परिपालयन्तस्तवैव तिष्ठाम सदास्तदोषाः ॥ ५,१.
All the gods, O Lord of the gods, are always ready to carry out your commands; whatever task you assign, we shall fulfill, remaining ever at your service.
श्रीपराशर उवाच एवं संस्तूयमानस्तु भगवान्परमेश्वरः । उज्जहारात्मनः केशौ सितकृष्णौ महामुने ॥ ५,१.
Śrī Parāśara said: Thus praised, the supreme Lord drew from himself two hairs, one white and one black, O great sage.
उवाच च सुरानेतौ मत्केशौ वसुधातले । अवतीर्य भुवो भारक्लेशहानिं करिष्यतः ॥ ५,१.
He said to the gods: These two hairs of mine, descending to the earth, will bring relief from the burden of the world.
सुराश्च सकलाःस्वांशैरवतीर्य महीतले । कुर्वन्तु युद्धमुन्मत्तैः पूर्वोत्पन्नैर्महासुरैः ॥ ५,१.
Let all the gods descend to earth with their own portions and wage war against the mad, previously arisen great demons.
ततः क्षयमशेषास्ते दैतेया धरमीतले । प्रयास्यन्ति न संदेहो मद्दृपातविचूर्णिताः ॥ ५,१.
Then, those demons on earth will be utterly destroyed; there is no doubt—they will be shattered by my descent.
वसुदेवस्य या पत्नी देवकी देवतोपमा । तत्रायमष्टमो गर्भो मत्केशो भविता सुराः ॥ ५,१.
The wife of Vasudeva, Devakī, who is like a goddess, will bear the eighth embryo—my hair—O gods.
अवतीर्य च तत्रायं कंसं घातयिता भुवि । कालनेमीं समुद्भूतमित्युक्त्वान्तर्दधे हरिः ॥ ५,१.
Descending there, he will slay Kaṃsa on earth and the reborn Kālanemi; having spoken thus, Hari vanished.
अदृश्याय ततस्तस्मै प्रणिपत्य महामुने । मेरुपृष्ठं सुरा जग्मुरवतेरुश्च भूतले ॥ ५,१.
Then, becoming invisible to him, the gods bowed to the great sage and went to the summit of Meru, and descended to earth.
कंसाय चाष्टमो गर्भो देवक्या धरणीधरः । भविष्यतीत्याच चक्षे भगवान्नारदो मुनिः ॥ ५,१.
And Nārada, the sage, declared to Kaṃsa that the eighth embryo of Devakī, O sustainer of the earth, will be born.
कंसोऽपि तदुपश्रुत्य नारदात्कुपितस्ततः । देवकीं वसुदेवं च गृहे गुप्तावधारयत् ॥ ५,१.
Kamsa, having heard this from Narada, became enraged and then kept Devaki and Vasudeva confined and guarded in his house.
वसुदेवेन कंसाय तेनैवोक्तं यथा पुरा । तथैव वसुदेवोऽपि पुत्रमर्पितवान् द्विज ॥ ५,१.
Just as Vasudeva had previously told Kamsa, so too did Vasudeva now, O Brahmin, hand over his son.
हिरण्यकशिपोः पुत्राःषड्गर्भा इति विश्रुताः । विष्णुप्रयुक्ता स्तान्निद्राक्रमाद्गर्भानयोजयत् ॥ ५,१.
The six sons, known as the offspring of Hiranyakashipu, were, by the will of Vishnu, drawn into Devaki's womb through the power of sleep.
योगनिद्रा महामाया वैष्णवी मोहितं यया । अविद्यया जगत्सर्वं तामाह भगवान्हरिः ॥ ५,१.
Yoganidra, the great illusion belonging to Vishnu, by whom the world is deluded through ignorance, was addressed by the blessed Hari.
श्रीभगवानुवाच निद्रे गच्छ ममादेशात्पातालातलसंश्रयान् । एकैकत्वेन षड्गर्भान्देवकीजठरं नय ॥ ५,१.
The Blessed Lord said: O Sleep, by my command, go to the lower realms and, one by one, transfer the six sons into Devaki's womb.
हतेषु तेषु कंसेन शेषाख्योंशस्ततो मम । अंशांशोनादरे तस्याःसप्तमः संभविष्यति ॥ ५,१.
After those six are slain by Kamsa, then a portion of mine, called Shesha, will become the seventh in her womb, as a partial manifestation.
गोकुले वसुदेवस्य भार्यान्या रोहिणी स्थिता । तस्याःस संभूतिसमं देवि नेयस्त्वयोदरम् ॥ ५,१.
In Gokula, Vasudeva's other wife Rohini resides; the embryo from Devaki should be transferred by you, O goddess, into her womb at the same time.
सप्तमो भोजरा जस्य भयाद्रोधोपरोधतः । देवक्याः पितितो गर्भ इति लोको वदिष्यति ॥ ५,१.
Because of the fear and oppression of the Bhoja king, people will say that Devaki's seventh child was miscarried.
गर्भसंकर्षणात्सोऽथ लोके संकर्षणेति वै । संज्ञामवाप्स्यते वीरः श्वेताद्रिशिखरोपमः ॥ ५,१.
Because of the transfer of the embryo, that hero, shining like the peak of the white mountain, will be known in the world as Sankarshana.
ततोऽहं संभविष्यामि देवकीजठरे शुभे । भर्गं त्वया यशोदाया गन्तव्यमविलंबितम् ॥ ५,१.
Then I shall be born in the auspicious womb of Devaki; but you must quickly go to Yashoda, carrying my brilliance.
