वेदवादविरोधवचनोच्चारणदूषिते च तस्मिन्देवापौ तिष्ठत्यपि ज्येष्ठभ्रातर्यखिलसस्यनिष्पत्तये ववर्ष भगवान्पर्जन्यः ॥ ४,२०.
Even though Devapi remained, having uttered words opposed to the Vedic doctrine, the Lord Parjanya rained for the fulfillment of all.
बाह्लीकात्सोमदत्तः पुत्रोऽभूत् ॥ ४,२०.
Somadatta was born as the son of Bahlika.
सोमदत्तस्यापि भूरिभूरिश्रवशल्यसंज्ञास्त्रयः पुत्रा बभूवुः ॥ ४,२०.
Somadatta had three sons: Bhuri, Bhurishravas, and Shalya.
शन्तनोरप्यमरनद्यां जाह्नव्यामुदारकीर्तिरशेषशास्त्रर्थविद्भीष्मः पुत्रोऽभूत् ॥ ४,२०.
Bhishma, renowned and learned in all scriptures, was born to Shantanu in the immortal river Jahnavi.
सत्यवत्यां च चित्राङ्गदविचित्रवीर्यौ द्वौ पुत्रावुत्पादयामास शन्तनुः ॥ ४,२०.
Shantanu also begot two sons, Chitrangada and Vichitravirya, on Satyavati.
चित्राङ्गदस्तु बाल एव चित्राङ्गदेनैव गन्धर्वोणाहवे निहतः ॥ ४,२०.
Chitrangada, while still a boy, was killed in battle by the Gandharva named Chitrangada.
विचित्रवीर्योऽपि काशीराजतनये अंबांवालिके उपयेमे ॥ ४,२०.
Vichitravirya married Ambā and Vālika, daughters of the king of Kashi.
तदुपभोगातिखेदाच्च यक्ष्मणा गृहीतः स पञ्चत्वमगमत् ॥ ४,२०.
Due to excessive enjoyment and distress, he was seized by consumption and attained death.
सत्यवतीनियोगाच्च मत्पुत्रः कृष्णद्वैपायनो मातुर्वचनमनतिक्रमणीयमिति कृत्वा विचित्रवीर्यक्षेत्रे धृतराष्ट्रपाण्डुतत्प्रहितभुजिष्यायां विदुरं चोत्पादयामास ॥ ४,२०.
By Satyavati's command, my son Krishna Dvaipayana, considering his mother's word as inviolable, begot Vidura in the field of Vichitravirya, through the maid sent by Dhritarashtra and Pandu.
धतराष्ट्रोपि गान्धार्यां दुर्योधनदुः शासनप्रधानं पुत्रशतमुत्पादयामास ॥ ४,२०.
Dhritarashtra, too, begot a hundred sons, with Duryodhana and Duhshasana as the foremost, upon Gandhari.
पाण्ढोरप्यरण्ये मृगयायामृषिशापोपहतप्रजाजननसामर्थ्यस्य धर्मवायुशक्रैर्युधिष्ठिरभीमसेनार्जुनाः कुन्त्यां नकुलसहदेवौ चाश्विभ्यां माद्रयां पञ्चपुत्राःसमुत्पादिताः ॥ ४,२०.
Pandu, while hunting in the forest, was rendered incapable of producing offspring by a sage's curse; thus, through Dharma, Vayu, and Indra, Yudhishthira, Bhimasena, and Arjuna were born to Kunti, and Nakula and Sahadeva, through the Ashvins, were born to Madri—five sons in all.
तेषां च द्रौपद्यां पञ्चैव बभूवुः ॥ ४,२०.
All five of them had Draupadi as their wife.
युधिष्ठिरात्प्रतिविन्ध्यः भीमसेनाच्छुतसेनः श्रुतकीर्तिरर्जुनाच्छुतानीको नकुलाच्छुतकर्मा सहदेवात् ॥ ४,२०.
From Yudhishthira came Prativindhya; from Bhimasena, Shrutasena; from Arjuna, Shrutakirti; from Nakula, Shatakarma; and from Sahadeva, Shrutakarma.
काशी च भीमसेनादेव सर्वगं सुतमवाप ॥ ४,२०.
Kashi, too, received a son named Sarvaga from Bhimasena.
यौधेयी युधिष्छिराद्देवकं पुत्रमवाप ॥ ४,२०.
Yaudheyi bore a son named Devaka from Yudhishthira.
हिडिंबा घटोत्कचं भीमसेनात्पुत्रं लेभे ॥ ४,२०.
Hidimba obtained Ghatotkacha as a son from Bhimasena.
काशी च भीमसेनादेव सर्वगं सुतमवाप ॥ ४,२०.
Kashi, too, received a son named Sarvaga from Bhimasena.
सहदेवाच्च विजयी कुहोत्रं पुत्रमवाप ॥ ४,२०.
From Sahadeva, Vijayī bore a son named Kuhotra.
रेणुमत्यां च नकुलोपि निरमित्रमजीजनत् ॥ ४,२०.
Nakula, too, begot a son named Niramitra upon Renumati.
अर्जुनस्याप्युलूप्यां नागकन्यायामिरावान्नाम पुत्रोऽभवत् ॥ ४,२०.
Arjuna also had a son named Iravan by Ulupi, the serpent maiden.
मणीपुरपतिपुत्र्यां पुत्रिकाधर्मेण बब्रुवाहनं नाम पुत्रमर्जुनोऽजनयत् ॥ ४,२०.
By the daughter of the king of Manipur, Arjuna begot a son named Babruvahana, through the custom of putrika.
सुभद्रायां चार्भकत्वेपि योसावतिबलपराक्रमःसमस्तारातिरथजेता सोऽभिमन्युरजायत ॥ ४,२०.
Even in childhood, Subhadra bore Abhimanyu, who was endowed with great strength and valor, and who conquered all enemy warriors.
अभिमन्योरुत्तरायां परिक्षीणेषु कुरुष्वश्वत्थामप्रयुक्तब्रह्मस्त्रेण गर्भ एव भस्मीकृतो भगवतःसकलसुरासुरवन्दितचरणयुगलस्यात्मेच्छया कारममानुषरूपधारीणोनुभावात्पुनर्जीवितमवाप्य परीक्षिज्जज्ञे ॥ ४,२०.
When Abhimanyu's wife Uttara was pregnant, the child was reduced to ashes in the womb by the Brahma weapon deployed by Ashvatthama; but by the will and power of the Lord, whose feet are worshipped by all gods and demons, the child was revived and Parikshit was born.
योऽयं सांप्रतमेदद्भूमण्डलमखण्डितायतिधर्मेण पालयतीति ॥ ४,२०.
He is the one who now rules this earth with unbroken righteousness.
अतः परं भविष्यानहं भूमिपालान् कीर्त्तयिष्ये । योऽयं साम्प्रतमवनीपतिः,पराक्षित् तस्यापि जनमेजय - श्रुतसेनोग्रसेन-भीमसेनाः पुत्राश्वत्वारो भविष्यन्ति ।। ४-२०-
Next, I will recount the future kings. The current ruler of the land is Parikshit; his sons will be Janamejaya, Shrutasena, Ugrasena, and Bhimasena.
जनमेजयस्यापि शतानीको भविष्यति । योऽसौ याज्ञवल्क्याद् वेदमधीत्य कृपादस्त्राण्यवाप्य विषमविषयविरक्तचित्तवृत्तिश्व शौनकोपदेशादात्मविज्ञानप्रवीणः परं निर्व्वाणमवाप्स्यति ।। ४-२०-
Janamejaya's son will be Shatanika, who, having studied the Vedas from Yajnavalkya and acquired weapons from Kripa, with a mind detached from pleasure and pain, and instructed by Shaunaka in self-knowledge, will attain supreme liberation.
शतानीकादश्वमेधदत्तो भविता तस्मादप्यधिसीमकृष्णः, अधिसीमकृष्णाद् निचक्षुः, यो गङ्गयापहृते हस्तिनापुरे कौशाम्ब्यां निवत्स्यति । तस्याप्युष्णः पुत्रो भविता । उष्णाद्विचिित्ररथः, ततः शुचिरथः, तस्माद् वृष्णि मान्, ततः सुषेणः, तस्मादपि सुनीथः, सुनीथादृचः, ततो नृचक्षुः, तस्यापि सुखाबलः, तस्मात् परिप्लवः, ततश्व सुनयः, ततो मेधावी, मेधाविनो नृपञ्जयः, ततो मृदुः, तस्मात् तिग्मः, वसुदानः, ततोऽप्यपरः शतानीकः ।। ४-२०-
From Śatānīka will be born Aśvamedhadatta; from him, Adhisīmakṛṣṇa; from Adhisīmakṛṣṇa, Nicakṣu, who, after Hastināpura is carried away by the Ganges, will reside in Kauśāmbī. He will have a son named Uṣṇa; from Uṣṇa will come Vicitraratha, then Śuciratha, from him Vṛṣṇimān, then Suṣeṇa, from him Sunītha, from Sunītha, Ṛca, then Nṛcakṣu, whose son will be Sukhābala, from him Pariplava, then Sunaya, then Medhāvī, from Medhāvī, Nṛpañjaya, then Mṛdu, from him Tigma, then Vasudāna, and after him, another Śatānīka.
तस्माच्च उदयनः, उदयनाद्विहीनरः, ततश्च दण्डपाणिः, ततो निरमित्रः, तस्माच्च क्षेमकः । तत्रायं श्लोकः । ब्रह्मक्षत्रस्य यो योनिर्वंशो राजर्षिसत्कृतः । क्षेमकं प्राप्य राजानं संस्थानं प्राप्स्यते कलौ ।। ४-२०-
From him will be Udayana; from Udayana, Vihīnara; then Daṇḍapāṇi, then Niramitra, and from him, Kṣemaka. Here is this verse: 'The lineage which is the source of Brahmins and Kṣatriyas, honored by royal sages, will, upon reaching King Kṣemaka, come to an end in the Kali age.'
श्रीपराशर उवाच अतश्चेक्ष्वाकवो भविष्याः पार्थिवाः कथ्यन्ते ॥ ४,२२.
Śrī Parāśara said: Now the future kings of the Ikṣvāku line will be described.
बृहद्बलस्य पुत्रो बृहत्क्षणः ॥ ४,२२.
Bṛhadkṣaṇa will be the son of Bṛhadbala.
