सुमतिमप्रतिरथं ध्रुवं चाप्यंतिनारः पुत्रानवाप
Aṃtināra had sons: Sumati, Apratiratha, and Dhruva.
अप्रतिरथस्य कण्वः पुत्रोऽभूत्
Apratiratha's son was Kaṇva.
तस्यापि मेधातिथिः
Kaṇva's son was Medhātithi.
यतः कण्वायना द्विजा बभूवुः
From him, the Kaṇvāyana Brāhmaṇas arose.
अप्रतिरथस्यापरः पुत्रोऽभूदैलीनः
Apratiratha had another son named Ailīna.
ऐलीनस्य दुष्यंताद्याश्चत्वारः पुत्रा बभूवुः
Ailīna had four sons, beginning with Duṣyanta.
दुष्यंताच्चक्रवर्त्ती भरतोऽभूत्
Duṣyanta became the universal emperor, and his son was Bharata.
यन्नामहेतुर्देवैश्श्लोको गीयते
Because of him, a verse is sung by the gods.
माता भस्त्र पितुः पुत्रो येन जातः स एव सः । भरस्व पुत्रं दुष्यंतमावमंस्थाश्शकुंतलाम्
Mother is the bellows, father the begetter; the son born from him is indeed his own. 'Accept your son Duṣyanta; do not disregard Śakuntalā.'
रेतोधाः पुत्रो नयति नरदेव यमक्षयात् । त्वं चास्य धाता गर्भस्य सत्यमाह शकुंतला
The son born of a man's seed leads the king from Yama's abode; and you are the creator of this embryo—Śakuntalā spoke the truth.
भरतस्य पत्नित्रये नव पुत्रा बभूवुः
Bharata had nine sons from his three wives.
नैते ममानुरूपा इत्यभिहितास्तन्मातरः परित्यागभयात्तत्पुत्राञ्जघ्नुः
Their mothers, fearing abandonment after being told, 'These are not suitable for me,' killed those sons.
ततोस्य वितथे पुत्रजन्मनि पुत्रार्थिनो मरुत्सोमयाजिनो दीर्घतमसः पार्ष्ण्यपास्तद्बृहस्पतिवीर्यादुतथ्यपत्न्यां ममतायां समुत्पन्नो भरद्वाजाख्यः पुत्रो मरुद्भिर्दत्तः
Then, when he was unsuccessful in producing a son, the Maruts, performers of the Soma sacrifice, desiring a son for him, gave him a son named Bharadvāja, born from Mamata, the wife of Utathya and daughter of Dīrghatamas, by the power of Bṛhaspati.
तस्यापि नामनिर्वचनश्लोकः पठ्यते
A verse explaining the name of that one is recited.
मूढे भर द्वाजमिमं भरद्वाजं बृहस्पते । यातौ यदुक्त्वा पितरौ भरद्वाजस्ततस्त्वयम् इति
"O Bṛhaspati, lift up this burden, this child, Bharadvāja!" Thus, having spoken, the two parents departed; therefore, he is called Bharadvāja.
भरद्वाजस्स तस्य वितथे पुत्रजन्मनि मरुद्भिर्दत्तः ततो वितथसंज्ञामवाप
Bharadvāja, given by the Maruts when a son was not born, thus received the name Vitatha.
वितथस्यापि मन्युः पुत्रोऽभवत्
Vitatha also had a son named Manyu.
बृहत्क्षत्रमहावीर्यनगरगर्गा अभवन्मन्युपुत्राः
Manyu's sons were Bṛhatkṣatra, Mahāvīrya, Nagara, and Garga.
नगरस्य संकृतिस्संकृतेर्गुरुप्रीतिरंतिदेवौ
Nagara's sons were Saṃkṛti; from Saṃkṛti came Guruprīti and Antideva.
गर्गाच्छिनिः ततश्च गार्ग्याश्शैन्याः क्षत्रोपेता द्विजातयो बभूवु
From Garga came Śini; from him, the Gārgya line arose, and among them, Kṣatriya-born Brāhmaṇas appeared.
महावीर्याच्च दुरुक्षयो नाम पुत्रोऽभवत्
From Mahāvīrya was born a son named Durukṣaya.
तस्य त्रय्यारुणिः पुष्करिणः कपिश्च पुत्रत्रयमभूत्
He had three sons: Trayyāruṇi, Puṣkariṇa, and Kapi.
तच्च पुत्रत्रितयमपि पश्चाद्विप्रतामुपजगाम
These three sons later attained Brāhmaṇa status.
बृहत्क्षत्रस्य सुहोत्रः
Bṛhatkṣatra's son was Suhotra.
सुहोत्राद्धस्ती य इदं हस्तिनपुरमावासयामास
From Suhotra came Hasti, who established the city of Hastinapura.
अजमीढद्विजमीढपुरुमीढास्त्रयो हस्तिनस्तनयाः
Hasti's three sons were Ajamīḍha, Dvijamīḍha, and Purumīḍha.
अजमीढात्कण्वः
From Ajamīḍha came Kaṇva.
कण्वान्मेधातिथिः
From Kaṇva came Medhātithi.
यतः कण्वायना द्विजाः
From him descended the Kaṇvāyana Brāhmaṇas.
अजमीढस्यान्यः पुत्रो बृहदिषुः
Ajamīḍha had another son named Bṛhadiṣu.
